I heard about Mia Zapata as a kid & was enthralled. I only now got to know her well. She was truly 100% about the music. She is the first female singer I’ve ever seen who has 0% sexy shit in their clothes. I genuinely feel some of the most powerful women who have their own inner strength get attacked by horrible men because to take down a strong woman is an extra trophy/prize to them. Mia, your music, and you being a force of nature always inspires me to keep kicking misogyny in the teeth. I know you’re rocking out in Heaven with David Bowie & Joe Strummer from The Clash. 🤘🏽🎸🤘🏽🎧🤘🏽🎸🤘🏽

I've thought about it a million times It takes all my strength just to keep it calm I hove to tell myself, just let it breathe Holding it inside will only help to do me in Each time I close my eyes I see another chain It's one I can't forget, something I can not break out of I need a second skin, something to hold me up Can't seem to get out of this hole I've dug myself right back in Just to wake up tells me I must be brave It hits me like a drug shot into my vein It's not as delightful of a pain Immobilizing me Almost makes me think I'm dead I need a second skin Something to hold me tough Can't do it on my own Sometimes I need just a little more help I want that chance to give every drop that's left in me I need a second skin Something I can not break out of I tell myself, just let it breathe It's a calmness I'm always searching for But the dirt it gets so heavy It falls above my head Seeping from under my feet It just keeps on getting deeper I need a second skin Something to hold me tough Can't do it on my own Sometimes I need just a little more help I've got that chance to give every drop that's left in me I need a second skin Something I cannot break free of Though no one ever said it'd be easy Still one's left to deny the choice that comes Between your willingness to survive Though you're knowing what you stand up against A world set to deceive You need a special strength I've got that second skin I've got that chance to give I've got the only way that I know how to live with it I need a second skin Something to hold me tough I need a second skin Something I cannot break out of

Chill, dude, the comment hits differently considering what happened to Mia. In the documentary (not the one just about her murder, the one her former bandmate did about the band) her father said Mia belongs to all of us now, and how happy he is people still appreciate her music. So it matters more than the usual "who's here in..." comments. Peace 🖤

Sounds like the Gits recording made the the X-Ray Cafe in Portland. There are two Gits CDs that have all of the X-Ray recordings (notated only as recorded in Portland) on them. The Gits played there on the tail end of their last tour. Zia was murdered just few days later. The Gits guitar player acquired the original masters from me a couple years later. He did a great job of mastering and they sound great. IMO, the X-Ray Cafe recordings were the best recordings ever made of the Gits. Being at the end of the tour, the band was ready to rock and they played loose and free.

I was there at the X-Ray show. Mia was a good personal friend of mine, so that show has a great deal of meaning for me in the memories of my life. i was devastated when she died. Just a great tragic loss of someone who was not only hugely talented, but also a very gentle, sweet person. I often cry when I listen to their music now. I still remember visiting Mia at Antioch College before the Gits ever got together and sitting in her room listening to her playing a version of Iggy Pop's "The Passenger" and thinking even then that she had something special. Damn Mia, why were you the one they had to pick off out of them all?

because today there will be similar tragedies and every day it will carry on until this is confronted and stopped and YOU can make a small difference by not turning a blind eye to it. It was an event that will ALWAYS be remembered, it will NEVER be forgotten.

Situational awareness is very important while walking in secluded places. Forensic files mentions that she was walking with a Walkman on at 2:00 am when someone attacked her

Such a talented woman! It's a damn shame that someone violently took her out of this world in such a cruel and degrading way. And from what I read, Mia was not carrying any ID on her at the time of her murder and it was the medical examiner who was a fan of The Gits that identified the body. It must have been awful for that poor medical examiner to have to do an autopsy on a musician who she loved and always attended her concerts.
