Written by the great JJ Cale. At the time this originally came out by Eric Clapton, JJ Cale was about to give up on the recording industry. Eric was always in awe of JJ Cale, became a teenage girl fan-like around JJ Cale. I saw JJ Cale shortly after and man he was smooooooth.

When Clapton heard that Van Halen quote, he had the same reaction as Lex. He just didn't hear it. Fun fact: This version of After Midnight was his second stab at it. He did a faster rock version on his first solo album. This one was recorded for a beer commercial. Michelob, I think. And when it first aired, he was in rehab. Oh, the irony.

The orig was by JJ Cale. Then in the 70's Clapton did a remake but a faster version. And later in the the yrs he remade it again , only this time it was " After Midnight " blues style . The one you're listening to now is the blues version he remade .

No question! Eric’s first version was the best cover of this song and is more suited to JJ’s version! I about wore out the Naturally album in college in 74 forward and his other albums! Eric had so much respect for JJ and was such a good friend to him. Thankfully they got to record their album together before JJ passed. RIP

JJ Cale also wrote Cocaine and They Call Me the Breeze among many other great songs. One of the founders of the Tulsa Sound, along with Leon Russell. He and Clapton recorded an album together at the end of Cale's life, The Road to Escondido. Clapton hadn't heard of Cale at the point of this recording but they became fast friends. The guitar solo on the 1970 version of "After Midnight" likely bears some influence on early Van Halen solos. Its simple and it cuts through before it cuts loose. Also listen to "Badge" by Cream. It has many of the hallmarks of a Van Halen song albeit at a varied pace. And "White Room" and "Tales of Brave Ulysees" are like stellar tutorials on the wah-wah pedal.

Lex sussed it out quick! EVH has mentioned Eric Clapton as one of his strongest influences in his guitar playing style. Though EVH had a powerful classical background, he could play bluesy soul if he wanted to. He could go up and down the range of genres. Eric Clapton is a gem of a guitarist.

Lex is so astute. I never really got the Clapton influence on Eddie either. At least style-wise. But I can see how Eddie might have appreciated Clapton's pure insinctive and natural approach to soloing. Eddie was no different.
@jenniferfoster1692
@jenniferfoster1692 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I saw Eddie say he was into Clapton through to Cream, then he became less interesting to him. We know Eddie was a classically trained pianist, so I think Lex's comment is right on...there's a lot of classical sounds from Eddie while Eric was obviously all about the blues. I don't think Eddie emulated anyone's style per se, but was inspired by their innovations and certain sounds.

Yeah, both covers are good -- Vic Provost described the first one well. JJ Cale's original is a perfect example of JJ Cale -- laid-back, smooth, little bursts of guitar fills and understated vocals. One can imagine the weed in the air for that (and many) Cale recordings 🙂

This is Clapton's 2nd cover of this song, his first was at a faster tempo and a lighter sound, this is slower and bluesier. I have to admit liking this version better. For more awesome Clapton, try his Same Old Blues from the concert for Montserrat, he gives it his all and you should see him ripping the blues. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎶
