Thanks so much for this Dorian. I'm currently in a huge career transition, from being a pastor for 24 years now into software development. It is an unsettling time for me with many uncertainties, so you video was a good reminder to focus on what is most important, being grateful, and being faithful at what is currently at hand.

Why the change if you dont mind me asking.
@stephengambill48158 ай бұрын
@@Dominknows Hey man, thanks for asking. I was burnt out, and not doing well personally. While I loved what I did for many years, it was time for a change and I waited too long to act on it. My wife knew it, close friends knew it, but I wasn't sure of how to exit and where to go. I was forced to face change, and am still groping a bit in the dark of just what path to take. I've completed a full-stack boot-camp, but as I'm sure you know Jr. dev jobs are hard to come by currently. But I'm committed to move forward and find the way.
@Dominknows8 ай бұрын
@@stephengambill4815 right on brother. So even after completing your bootcamp, one month after posting that comment, still no luck on a job? Thats unsettling, im sorry. How are you making money…? Do you have job prospects, whats next? I only ask you specifically, because I feel your position is very unique, and unlike the average person being that you’re a former pastor.
@stephengambill48158 ай бұрын
@@Dominknows Thanks again for asking and your concern. I finished full-stack boot-camp at the end of June, and done "all the things" I'm being told to try, and nothing, not even an interview at this point. I've been told that my age and life experience contribute significantly to this, but haven't been able to talk to anyone who is hiring at this point. It is the case with all my cohort, and we attended a school that typically has a 91% placement rate. Seems like we are in a tough time. As far as making money, nothing at this point. I've considered digging deeper into the Webflow world and going that route as a freelancer.

I love your content, dorian. Right now, I'm doing basic computer support. I'm in a great job, and have been thinking of getting into something more challenging like programming, but more on the machine learning side of things. I like the reality checks you give cuz I find myself thinking "man, I'd be so much better off if I was in programming", but then I realize that can have its own issues. Goals are important, but I don't want to make it my obsession. Sometimes, I can neglect time with the wife if I can too caught up in machine learning projects.

Hats off to you man for keeping it real and being quite unique on KZbin. (Please don't take this as pressure to make a certain type of content. I have a literal GIG syndrome story. I used to envy my neighbour's lawn and one day as I drove home she was standing at the fence that divides our yards.. Seh wanted to talk to me about somethinh so I went over tontalk to her. For aome reason I looked over at my lawn and it was so beautiful. I was shocked. Feom then i stopped wishing my lawn was as beautiful as hers and it made me learn the lesson of appreciating what I have instead of wishing I had what others have.

Taking my example, during my 20's i play a lot of video games, in fact i play video game since 8, now im taking my experience with games to be a game developer and taking my experience with no life balance to bring it up now in the 30's. Well i think we always learn.

It's funny. Living in Germany, I often think, "Life is shitty here" and that the USA is better. In the USA or elsewhere, you may dream of Europe. Software engineering is rarely a piece of cake. It's continuous learning until you retire, and if you have started late, you have to beat people with years of a headstart. It's not a bad profession, but do not expect it to be a dream job.
@electrictrojan67197 ай бұрын
You can't beat yourself up for simply not knowing about these things earlier in life, one of the most insidious things about poverty, including "relative poverty" is the narrowing of horizons. One can grow up literally having no idea what a happy working life is where people value you for your enthusiasm and abilities and encourage your contribution.
