I wanted to thank you for inadvertently helping me self-diagnose my sleep disorder. About 10 years ago, i had to give up my mon-fri day shift and I started a graveyard shift where I work 8pm-9am fri,sat,sun nights. It wasn't my choice, and I thought I would only be able to do that shift for a couple months. But what i noticed was it was somehow way easier to keep that schedule as opposed to my day shift. When i worked a day shift it was extremely difficult for me to get myself to bed, and wake up on time. With my current shift i basically just have to follow my own internal clock. I stay up later and later and then it just sort of wraps around. I always thought my sleeping patterns were insomnia, but the part that never made sense was that when I'm tired i can fall asleep just fine. Then in one of your streams, you mentioned non24 and all of the sudden it all clicked. It just made so much sense. So thanks man i really appreciate you. You've helped me to understand and optimize my schedule in a way that has improved my life and health immensely. Keep being awesome 😎
@BoltTheEmolgaАй бұрын
...wait this is the first I've heard of this and it actually makes perfect sense for me too, thank you both
@ToyKeeperАй бұрын
Trying to keep a job with non24 is really really hard. I just have to make it a non-negotiable condition of my employment that I'm allowed to sleep on my own schedule, because if I force myself to be up at specific hours consistently, it's really bad for my health and I end up sick constantly and unable to function. But if I just sleep about an hour later each day, I'm totally fine.

Re sleep disorders: 20 years ago I had my first overnight sleep study and multiple sleep latency test done to check for sleep disorders. They diagnosed me with delayed sleep phase syndrome but an official diagnosis of narcolepsy from that study alone was "inconclusive." In 2009, I had four nose and throat surgeries to correct breathing issues and recurring headaches but in 2017 was still diagnosed with sleep apnea regardless. 20 years after the original 2004 sleep study, a little over a month ago, I had another sleep study and MSLT done at the same sleep clinic and they _finally_ gave me that diagnosis of narcolepsy, narcolepsy I knew I had for more than 20 years but that original 2004 study wouldn't officially give me because I was falling asleep _in between_ the designated sleep periods of the MSLT rather than during those given periods and they don't keep the instruments hooked up during the in-between periods. 20 years of going undiagnosed and untreated because they have rigid testing methodologies that don't take into account real-world influences and external factors. Sleep science seems to have come a long way even in the past 20 years, but unless the testing catches up with the times to take factors from more modern lifestyles into account then peeps will be suffering without any solutions other than to self-medicate with copious amounts of stimulants like I did; I used to drink at least two and upwards of four 15-16 fl.oz. cans of Starbucks Double-Shot Espresso daily when I was working full-time, for example, and would swap it out for Rockstar Energy Mean Bean Vanilla Java when the Starbucks was out of stock.
@linux_steelyАй бұрын
As someone with narcolepsy, non-24, and insomnia... I agree, they really need to fix... well, a lot of things. Having many sleep tests done before getting a different sleep specialist who gave me an MSLT at just the right time to get narcolepsy diagnosis but the they went out of business and none of the other doctors I was working with has that data and I can't get retested because non-24 got so bad it messes it up plus the severe migraines I get from interrupted sleep and now I'm strait up bedridden... Then there's the other sleep specialist who claims the narcolepsy diagnoses is wrong because I was taking medicine (that doesn't effect sleep...) and I can't have non-24 because only blind people have that, so I must just be a lazy child who just wants to stay up late. He hated my guts for some reason. Also, studies have shown young children's circadian rhythms usually start out early and move later as time goes on, meaning teenagers are supposed to be going to sleep and getting up late because that's how the body works but NO force our children to be severely sleep deprived during school and then call them lazy... FFS BTW, sleep medication always prevents getting [good] REM sleep so it may feel like you are getting sleep but your intelligence will slowly drop along with your memory and critical thinking skills turning you into a zombie or an idiot. Different types of medicines do this at different speeds. People with narcolepsy are somewhat resistant to this change for whatever reason. Evidence: I get the same type of migraine when I don't get REM sleep and all medications that effect sleep in some way will cause that migraine. And lastly (that I can think of today) we treat disabled people, especially those with invisible disabilities, like absolute shit. I'm still unable to get on disability despite being bedridden and have only been getting worse for 20 years... Sorry for the rant. I'm tired and grumpy lol.

I had a similar sleeping problem like yours. My sleeping rhythm just got shifted every day until I had to "reset" it by staying awake a whole day. But then i learned about a "self CBT" from a psychiatrist where you just sleep deprive yourself a little bit so that you just have to sleep when it's time to. It's an interesting way of using the fact that we can override the circadian rhythm.

I also have it, but the doctor told me that approximately 90% of people that are diagnosed are blind, which is funny to me that the only 2 persons I know that have it are me and Larl and both can see. Hearing that non-24 Hour sleep disorder is interesting, but it makes sense that it's real. I read of something like that in the fanfiction Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality and didn't think about if it could happen IRL. My sleep issues are also very bad. Ever since I was little I’d always have an easier time staying up later in the night. VS going to bed at earlier times. I’ve attempted to sleep at the “normal” times and my body just doesn’t let me. It’s gotten a lot harder since having kids. My oldest is a lot like me and has always struggled with waking up and going to bed at an appropriate time. Her internal clock always opts for midnight 1 AM bedtimes. We’ve tried waking her up earlier and making her nap way earlier in the day. We’ve tried cutting her nap time. Everything. But her body just has a specific time it wants to go to bed at.

Bit of an uneducated question. As my science knowledge is sparse... If cells operate on a 24hr clock as a result of the conditions of our planet, Would it be fair to assume, for example, the bacteria found on the side of shuttles operates on a different perhaps shorter clock? If so, do you think there is practical application for something like that? (Do we already do something like that in medicines?) or Does bacteria operate differently?
