What's up guys it’s Ollie from History Profiles and todays video will be about the legendary Viking warrior and King Bjorn Ironside. I will be taking you to 9th century Scandinavia where Bjorn’s story begins.

I understand what you’re saying @SØMNÎPHØBÎÄ I grew up with the Norse myths as paternal grandmother was born in Norway. Many customs were abandoned in US, names Anglicized or changed altogether, but the stories remained. I recently found out that I’m related to Rollo as ever-so-great x I don’t know how many generations grandfather. I am amazed. How I wish my relatives were still around to tell them. I’m still a little in shock to have found and documented this. So cool!

It added drama to make Bjorn Lagertha's son. Remember, it was Bjorn that told Ragnar not to fornicate with Aslaug a second time for the sake of Lagertha, his mother in the show. And also when Bjorn goes with Lagertha when she leave Ragnar. It was all for entertainment, of course they were going to switch things up a bit. Rollo being Ragnar's brother wasn't historically accurate either.

Very loosely. The source material was more of a springboard, because they changed a lot of little things. Rollo wasn't Ragnar's brother. They may have not have even met one another, or lived in the same time period. Other things they did, like Ragnar's death, was mostly historically correct. He was thrown into a pit with venomous snakes. Some sources say he had to pulled out of the pit, and his leather pants cured in tar (where the name Lothbrok or Lodbrok comes from, his special pants impervious to blades) had to be removed so he would be more vulnerable to the snakes.

I am so deeply fascinated by your video's and history of the Vikings. I was adopted and 6 years ago gifted a DNA test. Which led to discovering and having a relationship with my biological family. Of course learning where my roots come from...%78 Norwegian, %15 Swedish and rest Broadly NW European. Explains tall and blonde ! Lol ! My Father is 93 and just recently told me that although he was 2nd generation born in USA, Minnesota, he did not speak English until he went to 1st grade. He lived with his parents and Grandparents. My Great Grandparents emigrated from Norway, met at Ellis Island and were married on way to Minnesota via Horse and wagon train. Father still speaks Norwegian and has taught me bits and pieces. Anyway, your videos make me feel closer to my roots !! Thank you !!

I just heard this name first time ever "BJORN IRONSIDE" in the Vikings series n after watching the series, i Respect Bjorn with all my heart, although being from India, we also had such great warriors in the past, but still the name NORTHMEN, was so much feared and respected in the history of the world, i can say that, those men's/warriors/sons/father's/mother's/Valkyries can never be reborn again, those people were so Special and so strong that we can't even imagine today, i wish I had a Viking bloodline, because i really respect the Vikings from all my heart, from the series i got to know so much about the religion as well, Odin, thor, Loki Freya, all those were actually real Gods for the Norsemen..!! I wish they had shown more for BJORN IRONSIDE, because he had such a tremendous impact on the people for his bravery and a golden noble heart, may they all be in Valhalla, but their Stories should be continued and widespread among all the corners of the world, long live King BJORN IRONSIDE, long live the great son..❤️

Well you're just another fooI, because the TV show got everything about the Vikings, wr0ng. They were basically just Iooters and cut-throat bandits & pirates that targeted soft defenseless abbies and villages. They would usually lose against REAL ARMIES that were prepared to fight them. Also, Bjorn Ironside's story in the TV show was greatly exaggerated and falsified, as was Lagatha's, who was not even the REAL Bjorn's mother. As for Scandinavians today, they hate brown Asiatic people Iike you, because they feel that too many of your kind are emigrating into their countries these days--so kissing up to them just makes you look even more sad!

Bjorn had an Impossible Task bcuz his Father Ragnar was the most Celebrated, Accomplished and Feared Viking ever born. Along with his brother Ivar, the 2 of them made their Late Father Proud and maybe Ragnar was Celebrating in the Castles of ValHalla beside the Mighty Oden and the Rest of the Viking Warriors who had reached ValHalla throughtout history. Bjorn was an example of A True Viking Warrior and when he entered any Kingz Castle He Commanded Respect. Great Video Keep up the GoodWork my friend.

Bjorn was one of the more interesting figures from this time frame. Most I have read on him, portray him as "presenting as a big figure" or a huge figure. Sometimes I wonder if this was physical or more of a presentation of presence, as many of the stories say he looked eye to eye with a few figures that were consistent with normal sized Nords.

Which he might have been also but as i have watched the series,he is also depicted as a cunning general and good king ruling with justice.....and in the end he comes back from death-bed sitting on a horse and raising his sword one last time before dying to give an order to attack while horrified enemies are looking since they believed man on a horse was already dead while ago.... And possibly only one of legendary kings of vikings who has known place where the man himself is buried (west of modern day stockholm,sweden on island near road named after him and this viking-shrine is known by google maps)

@@laurijuntunen2816 the death-bed thing was an act of desperation as he could barely even hold up the sword, so not very cunning when everyone and their mother told him Norway would rise behind him. As for the good king thing, I think his wife pointed out that he was not - first he spares the lives of the men who would - in Norse fashion - make revenge and lead to Lagertha's death, and then rather than give Hvitserk the chance at Valhalla he robs him of the opportunity. Lastly Ragnar himself once told him he's got the "strength of a man and the will of a little girl" and reminded him that he should rule with his head, not with his heart. Bjorn spends his entire kingship ruling with his heart.

It´s very entertaining to read all the posts on this topic :) so many ppl that claim to know the "truth" about the "real" Lodbroks, or badass vikings :D Not even the historians of today can be sure ;) There´s hundreds or thousands of runes/scripts written in different eras claiming this and that where time and place is very different depending on which runes or later tales one choose to believe in. Most of the scripts and tales was written around year 1200 by persons who never lived to see those living legends who raged around 800-900, so we can be sure of that alot of what we find to be the "truth" is just guessings and fairytales ;) But didn´t "badass vikings" exist then???! ofcourse they did, but we don´t know much about their true deeds and whereabouts ...we can guess and assume ;)

Bjourn was a boss! Interestingly enough, Ancestry dna locator sent me an update. Along with gene locators in Ireland, Scotland, England and the Aquitaine region of France, there was a correction made on the Italian peninsula. Initially it said Southern Italy around the Naples area where my grandmother on father's side was born. However a correction shifted it to smaller area in Northern Italy exactly centered on Pisa and stretching inland some. The family name is rooted in The Ruz (two dots over the "u" ) which I had learned was what the oarsmen of the Scandinavian ships were called. Our personal heritages mean more than what is on paper. I spent 10 yrs in USMC, a helicopter warrior and rifle infantryman. Makes me wonder.

Bjørn founded the 'House of What Now' in Sweden? Okay, I looked it up: It’s the House of Munsö. Munsö is an island in Mälaren where Björn Ironside is supposed to lie buried in Björnshögen next to Husby. This is contested, but likely true, since Björn did get _the recently won Swedish Kingdom_ and moved to Uppsala after Ragnar Lothbrok’s death. But moved from where? Well, at the time of Lothbrok’s death, the residency was in Lejre, on Zealand, and the raid against King Eysteinn of Sweden to revenge the killing of both Björn’s half brothers, originated in Lejre and had the the participation of Queen Aslaug, Ivar Boneless and Björn Ironside. Eysteinn was killed and that’s when and why Björn took over Sweden as King, having already owned land in South-east Sweden and King Eysteinn being a vassal of King Ragnar Lothbrok in the first place. Björn, being a Lothbrok, wouldn’t found a House of Munsö, and nothing supports this fabrication. The House of Lothbrok wasn’t broken; Aslaug, Halfdan and Ivar’s sons still resided in Lejre…
