Reminds me of when I was cooking with my mother, who passed away 09/30/18. Many years ago, I finally asked her to start writing her recipes down and she would say the same thing: a smidgen, a dab, a lil bit, a pinch....till eventually, one Thanksgiving I was helping her make her cornbread dressing..I made her pour out her smidgens, dabs, bits and pinches into a bowl first as she was adding them and then we actually took measuring spoons, cups, etc and measured out how much it actually was lol. I've made it every year since she passed and it's delicious..but of course nothing can ever replace my momma's home cooking....Thanks for sharing her and this recipe with us!

@@Deenique16 would be nice. Because if you try to make it again and it isn’t right, you’re fucked. And Jeanine is a mor*n for saying you shouldn’t measure it, and if you get it wrong just keep making it until you get it right. That sounds retar*ed.

Maybe. I found out years later that my Mom purposely left out ingredients when she was asked about a recipe. I don't know if it was vanity or whether it was fear. I've started to make recipe books for daughters because it's what you should do.

Agreed, but don't contaminate the food with a finger you keep putting in your mouth to taste as you go along -- germs that will grow in the salad, which usually is luke-warm due to the cooked potatoes and eggs! The germs continue to grow until the salad is chilled in the fridge. If you like it room-temp, then DON'T contaminate it with food you've touched with your hands that can pick up germs everywhere! (Wash your hands thoroughly before handling food, and use a clean towel to dry them, moist towels pick up lots of germs!) I love to cook, but I am also very conscious of bacteria! Keep food, everything you prep with and the areas (and your hands) clean, not sterile, just clean! Prevent contamination from other sources when cooking.
@tracyporter86155 жыл бұрын
+M.J. Leger I thought I was the only one that noticed them putting their fingers in the mix, you couldn't have said it better, I thought that was gross but, I might just try that recipe, it looks good.
@maureenmillikan65185 жыл бұрын
Yes, but without all of the contamination. No one in our family would ever do this. Everything but the potatoes should be mixed separately and taste tested with a new spoon every time. Only then is it added to the potatoes and very gently folded in, so the potatoes do not break apart.

@viewtube65124 жыл бұрын
ethel newberry How can they know, unless they tasted it? It’s more like people being trolls, not having any idea the value in the awesome knowledge our elders impart, or in the value of this video. If it isn’t something outrageous, people have little time for it. I think I was born much too late, people are rude & troll just for the sake of being rude. This is a video of a Grandmother making potato salad, I knew that by the title before I began watching it. It fulfilled all those requirements and more. I enjoyed it, watching 3 generations interact, and a grandson who value his grandmother while she is still around, is good stuff. I use sweet pickle cubes (and a couple tbsp of the pickle juice incorporated into the sauce) instead of dill pickles & vinegar in mine. Also a sweet Vidalia onion instead of spring onions, and no vinegar or sugar. However, I didn’t give a thumbs down because the title didn’t say “viewtubes favorite potato salad recipe”. A better explanation for the Thumbs Down’s is that some people are so caught up in themselves they can’t see past a selfie-stick today, so everything else is just caca to them. That’s exactly how I see it the Thumb’s down.
@c.92314 жыл бұрын
I was shocked at that too. If they don't like the recipe they dont have to use it, but why try to hurt the youtuber? Crazy because the video was well made. lts kind of an artist slice- of-life piece, a profile of an average midwestern family. The film isn't just about potato salad, but about our fondness for family traditions and love for our grandparents.
@olduglyentwife57004 жыл бұрын
I’m not a troll but the music is so loud I can’t hear what anyone is saying. That may be why some people gave it thumbs down. Its a sweet video regardless!

@@ethelnewberry151 "One man's bread is another's poison" as the old adage goes. Some people prefer Chocolate while others prefer Vanilla. Neither can explain why they just know they do. That's the nature of personal preferences regarding food and recipes. It comes with the territory and can't be avoided. We grow up loving and craving what our beloved precious elders made for us over a lifetime. That, being a deeply ingrained part of who we are as an individual as compared to the person next to us much like our fingerprints.

If anything your responses are far more rude. I like to cook and therefore seek out HOMEMADE recipes so to watch one that then is more about packeted food is disappointing. I think you need to learn some de-escalating and calming skills as you seem to be overly offended by a factual and non-rude comment. No need to reply.

Grandmothers never measure. Everybody knows that ;)
@susancantorna10975 жыл бұрын
Oh, they measure, but in their own way. Mine used to say "use a dime store cup" of flour or whatever. A dime store cup. You know, those cheap old ceramic cups from the old McCrory's or Woolworths. She was born in 1897. Gone now.
@ethelnewberry1514 жыл бұрын
@@susancantorna1097: I never knew either of my grandmothers'. When you mentioned measuring cups, I though of my mother's measuring cup. It was my father's coffee mug which I believe he stole from a restaurant in the early 1930's, just before I was born, according Mama. I inherited that big thick heavy white mug with a green stripe around the middle of it when Mama died in 1957. That was her measuring cup for as long as I can remember...the best chocolate cakes, pie crust's, biscuits, home made noodles, milk, water, anything that had to be measured...that's what she used. When she died, I took the mug. In the 1950's, my husband and I were too poor to buy a measuring cup, so I used Father's coffee mug, and it worked fine for me, too. I use the mug now, and drink herbal tea from it. Regarding the Potato salad: No matter how good it is, there is always a matter of personal choice, and taste. Not everyone will agree, because we each have a personal standard, and perhaps that is what the other person is meaning, and, that is assuming he/she did taste the P. Salad. at one time or another. Also, that is the families Grandmother, and if they say its the best, then to them it "is" the best. You shouldn't fault them for their loving thoughts about their "MeMaw" and her 'Tater Salad.

I made this today....I even used an orange bowl.....something was missing tho I think...Oh! Yeah! Grandmas fingers! Gotta fly to Iowa and get me a shaker full of that! Iowans are the nicest people in the whole world...and they really know what to do with Miracle Whip!

Small town Iowa cooks are the best. My husband grew up a tiny town there and pot lucks were heavenly. I’ve used so many recipes that I got from the ladies that lived there, as well as my mother-in-law. 👍🏼

Grandma in charge...makes me miss my grandmothers. This is how my grandmothers cooked; with no recipes. They cooked with their head and the ability to taste and adjust seasonings.

Lucky family to watch their grandma’s famous recipe. I regretted not writing down my old folks fave dishes , now they’re gone and we just reminisced those days.

Cutest Grandmother award, she is just so cute! She makes her potato salad like my Grammy did, couldn't help but tear up while giggling. I've watched this 3 times already and sent it to my sister to watch. She is so well loved by her family, and they did a fantastic job on putting this video together! Kudos from Canada :D

Loved this video! She reminds me so much of my Grandma ("Nanny"). She also never measured anything, yet every single thing she cooked always turned out perfect. If you asked her "how much?", it was always "Oh, just a tad", or "a smidge". Thanks for reminding me of sweet memories. :)
