The Grinch is one of Doug and Rob's favorite Christmas stories. Does the 2018 version improve on the hideous live action version, or only make it worse?

It never occurred me to give this a thought, but here we go: Where did the Grinch find all this furniture to fill his cave in this version? In the Carrey version, they gave a reason where he found all his stuff, he scavenged most of his stuff from the dump and most of the machines and furniture were crudely made, so it made sense he must have built and rigged this stuff himself. In 2018's The Grinch, this cave is super clean and the furniture looks like it came from Ikea or bed, bath and beyond. How does he pay for the water, gas, electricity he clearly has? Does the Who government ignore him and make everyone else pay? Does Whoville have stuff delivered via online, Whoamazon, Whoebay and such??

That's one of the things in Illumination movies that hocks me off - in their quest to please everyone in the audience, they make every single character likeable, including the ones that don't need to be. So when the antagonists are just grumpy doofuses who every other character already likes anyway, it's like there's no stakes. It's like, yeah, he's ostensibly the bad guy, but no one in the movie seems to care, so why should we?

How to fix this movie: 1. Cumberbatch uses his British accent, always condescendingly pre-heart-attack. 2. Add something called "humor." PS: Never be afraid to go a bit dark. Kids will die for it. 3. No backstory for the Grinch. Or have him make up backstories, like he trolls the Whos. 4. If he is to go into town, make everyone terrified of him--wide leeway, avoiding eye-contact, or even the streets are empty. 5. Make Cindy less-energetic and have her HELP her mother, giving us the connection. I could go on, but that would require more time.

See, Illumination movies aren't terrible, but I think they tick me off worse because they're perfectly content to just land in the middle and be marketably mediocre. It's like they calculated a formula that'll produce the exact bare minimum amount of quality every time to at least make audiences go "aw, that's cute", but they make no effort at all to rise above that. And they've ridden that for ten years now, making pretty much the exact same movie every time. Hell, even their characters all have the same stupid round cheeks and look like they all belong in the same universe. They've been on autopilot from day one, and it just wriggles under my skin and makes me go "God, just TRY something different for once!"

The concept of a remake has more hurdles than creating something new when it comes to appealing to anyone with any level of critical thought towards film. A word for word remake (Psycho remake) can still be hated for having bad acting and direction. A totally different remake (The Grinch) can be hated for changing the core of the character so much it is unrecognizable and creates a tonal whiplash. A middle ground remake (Beauty and the Beast) can still be hated for both the ways it changed things and the way it kept things because it creates a rather incoherent and honestly moronic story wherein it adds unnecessary scenes and plot lines and removes the stuff we liked and remembered. It is not about what is changed or what is kept the same. It is about the soul of the property and every facet that we judge a film based on without nostalgia goggles. Evil Dead was remade and is generally regarded as a good film, yet it is nothing like the original.

I don’t know. The story behind him hating Christmas is just really weak to me. P.S. - We see the grinch put on pants but no shirt. I didn’t see a shirt in his closet. So for a few days, between the movie review and watching that Green Eggs and Ham show, I've been thinking of how a remake of the Grinch should actually be done. The Grinch is basically just a grumpy old man forgot about the meaning of Christmas, not from having a bad association from it like the movies have, but just from doing it a lot with his family years ago, and now that he lives all alone with just his dog (is a grumpy guy liking his only companion really that bad, Doug?) and being burnt out from the holidays in his youth and Whoville going bigger and brighter with their Christmases (Christmas's? Christmi?), he finds it to be nothing but a annual pain in the ass. But he's not actually a bad person. He's just a Who that wants to keep to himself not be bothered by anything that inconveniences him. Someone wants him to ho something so they can screw it it in? Screw off! Someone ask him to watch his bag for a minute? He watches some guy steal it. Cindy Lou can't reach the mailbox and asks for help? That's the one thing that doesn't even take a moment of his time. And after a year of planning and successfully fishing his Christmas caper, something that would be hinted here and there during the story, he gets ready to enjoy his peace and quiet before hearing Whoville singing and learning "Maybe Christmas means a little more". Giving up on everything, he pushes his sleigh down the hill to return the gifts to the town (Don't need to copy the classic strength of 10 man part). Getting ready to have a Christmas alone with Max, Cindy Lou becomes the Grinch's first guest in years and invites him over to spend Christmas with her and her mother, going on to become something of a grandfather to her and finally begin to let people in his life again.

After seeing you guys talk about this Grinch, I noticed that I'm more of a writing person than a visuals person. I really prefer watching the Jim Carrey Grinch over this newer animated one. This one looks just beautiful, and it does have that enchanting winter holiday look, but I just can't sit through a movie-long equivalent of saltines. I think the Jim Carrey one is much funnier in far more places, and I just like JC's performance better. I'll be rewatching Jim Carrey's Grinch and Chuck Jones's Grinch ten more times before thinking about checking this most recent one out again.
@wingedmirage4226
@wingedmirage4226 4 жыл бұрын
Along similar lines, I think the real reason they hate the Jim Carrey one so much isn’t so much the visuals as they claim, but because they’re big Christmas fans (Doug makes a joke about it every year after all). They want their movies to celebrate Christmas, not criticize it. The original Grinch was all about the power of Christmas being so powerful and pure it turns an inexplicably cranky Christmas-hating person into a big lover of it, just because he sees people being happy without presents, the true Christmas spirit. While Jim Carrey’s version, while it has the same ending, also openly criticized certain attitudes and parts of Christmas, while giving the Grinch an understandable reason for not liking the season (something Critic complains about in the review). So the people who enjoy it are people who dislike some part of Christmas and can relate to the Grinch. tl;dr People who love all parts of Christmas favor the original, while people who don’t like it appreciate the Jim Carrey one more. Personally I like Christmas, but I also think that some parts deserve to be criticized, so I do enjoy the Jim Carrey one, though I still favor the original. Meanwhile this new movie just...exists.

I always thought that in the jim Carrey version since the Grinch was part of whoville once, that was the reason he voluntarily went to the town for the *sigh* whocentennial, and struggled with attending. Sure they hurt him and ran him out of town, but he could have gone anywhere in the...snowflake.. But he chose a place where he could still watch and hear the whos because he still deep down did wanted to rejoin them. It gave that version a lot of character, which is necessary if you're gonna stretch his story 3x the original length. We all prefer the largely cantankerous Grinch, but a renegade loner Grinch that hates the popular guys but longs to be one isn't a terrible hook.

@@vivir339 I always thought the Spider-Man score was where he first started losing his touch. (Planet of the Apes wasn't a great score, but it tried some interesting things.) His Spider-Man theme isn't bad, but I think it sounds rather lazy and pedestrian compared to his themes for movies/TV shows like Batman, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Dick Tracy, Darkman, The Simpsons, The Flash (1990), Army of Darkness, Nightbreed, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, etc. I really thought Christopher Young's score for Spider-Man 3 was an improvement over Elfman's scores for the previous films.

As much as I really don’t like the live action movie and the added storytelling, there was at least an attempt to show the audience why he hated the holiday, he was bullied, he was ridiculed utterly humiliated. Here he’s more anxious about the holiday than outright loathing it. And I think the idea of Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch is brilliant. Something he and Boris Karloff have in common is that they are British actors that have soft yet cryptic voices. In the original he was was cold and bitter yet cunning and manipulative. Here he just moves and acts like any other cartoon character rather than an animated movie character. And it feels like the writers couldn’t decide on what his personality should be, nor what direction Cumberbatch’s voice should be taken whether it’s British like Karloff, a straight up American accent hell there’s a moment where he sounded like Jim Carrey’s Grinch like it’s really inconsistent.

Wouldn't have this been so much better, if Cumberbatch used his deep sinister natural voice, and if they animated the Grinch in a more creepy manner to give contrast to the bright and cheerful Whoville? Make him anti-social, and cruel. Restore the motive to steal Christmas as just being irritated by the noise and partying. And maybe when he redeems himself, maybe make it feel like he's experiencing culture shock where he's almost afraid of being among the Whos after all that had happened. Like as if he's almost bothered by kindness because no one ever showed it to him.
