I give it a 9. Its length says nothing of its quality. The film is necessarily long. If it was shorter the appreciation for the characters would be lacking. For the last 45 minutes I was on the edge of my seat. Not many films can do that for me. Great time at the movies.

tedobs I usually reserve 10 for films that absolutely blew me away. I really enjoyed this film and think it is a fine addition to his oeuvre, but it did not blow me away or innovate the way Pulp Fiction did.

Agreed. WAY too much exposition. And while a bizarre structure is the director's prerogative, here it just felt clunky and... boring! Guaranteed that if this were the first film by a new writer/director, most people would be saying it was slow, and boring, and rubbish. Because it was.

+Lt. Col. Frank Slade I don't know about that. Snowstorm, claustrophobic and distrust of everyone. However, I felt none of these things had nearly as good of an impact. Tatum hiding away ruined it. It should have been just the eight. Also, should have seen more danger involving the blizzard (why have a five minute scene involving putting up lines, if you never plan on using the outdoors/blizzard as a plot device besides "kick the door"). That and the narration was terrible. Should have shown the mystery poisoning during the Sam Jackson speech without just doing exposition. I liked the Things ending better too, where you know they both die, but could one of them still be the bad guy? And this had none of that.

I'd say that length definitely deserves to be criticised if the film doesn't make adequate use of it. Nymphomaniac suffers majorly because of its length, as it establishes it's core motifs and then repeats them incessantly, making the film become frustrating and way less watchable than maybe it could have been. that said, I've not seen the hateful eight, and I can't make cent either way in how Tarantino uses his length

The movie lives up to the name. These are horrible, hateful scoundrels. Considering the movie mostly takes place in that little cabin, it's a very entertaining film. Kurt, Sam, Jennifer and Walter were great. Despite being so chatty, it didn't feel like I was watching a 3 hour film. The dialogue was interesting. Also, Death Proof is his favorite QT film? What's his 2nd favorite?
@34672rr
@34672rr 9 жыл бұрын
+Tone Riggz I thought everyone was good except Russell. He was good about half the time, but his delivery of the dialogue mostly was crap, especially the longer sections. I am sure QT wanted more takes, but the expensive film probably started racking up. The best part of the film was the film itself, I haven't seen a real film in a decade and it looked absolutely breathtaking. Old school and gritty, yet clear. The color was so organic as opposed to the hyper real digital films shot today.

+TrunkMonkey3000 It's hilarious how stupid you guys are. No one is holding Quentin Tarantino's movies up as moral guidelines, unlike what you people do with your hideous "holy" texts. We simply understand that, just as the Bible is a work of fiction, so are movies. Especially Quentin Tarantino's movies. They are fun to watch, I just don't take any moral cues from them. And therein lies the problem of you people - you need that book of yours (whichever one) to guide your own morality, and the Bible is simply not up to snuff in that regard. It doesn't even come close. Just as a movie by Quentin Tarantino doesn't come close to that. Also, Hitchens is dead, so I don't see how he "is over here praising Quentin for another movie filled with gore, death, and rape". Though you people do have your delusions aplenty.

SPOILER I was always rooting for Chris! Kind of assumed that something bad would happen to Kurt Russel eventually, but the most shocking thing was Sam Jackson's monologue about forcing that general's son to suck his dick. Guess it's kind of confirmed that Tarantino has a fetish for black dudes? Anyways, I'm glad the violent ending had a subtle peaceful tone, like how the white dude and the black dude work together. So it wasn't really a racist film either way (pro white or pro black). END SPOILER

"Eight" is half-assed, but carries itself like another masterpiece, swaggering and stubbing its toe and swaggering some more. It has superb photography, music, set design and performances (particularly by Russell, Goggins, Leigh and Jackson), but no fervor, no framework, no justification for its nonstop insults, provocations and atrocities. It has a bully's mentality. Of course, none of my gripes will matter to hardcore fans, who will wave away objections to the film's methods and messages with, "Well, it's called 'The Hateful Eight'-of course it would be hateful!"-as if making a lavishly produced but ultimately empty wallow in viciousness were an OK thing to do as long as the filmmaker fessed up. It's hard to shake the suspicion that, deep down, he believes in nothing but sensation, and that he's spent the last decade or so stridently identifying with oppressed groups so that he can get a gold star for making the kinds of films he'd be making anyway.

7:15 "I think it's too long" nailed it. If they cut a half hour of exposition out of this film it would fix many of it's problems. Some of the relentless exposition would be cut. 3. More action to screen time ratio. ( i hate to be the guy saying "not enough action" but here I am) 4. Wrap it up

I cannot understand all this confusion about Kill Bill being one or two movies. I've heard this on the majority of reviews/videos I've watched about The Hateful Eight. Tarantino made Kill Bill as one film, 'Kill Bill', but the Weinsteins thought it was too long so they made Tarantino cut the film into two volumes, hence volume 1 and 2. Why is this so difficult?

I enjoyed this film more than Django Unchained but Tarantino is still really clumsy with race. He's the schlock master and when he tries to have a film with a serious moral point I feel it kinda of exposes his short comings as a film maker. I agree with Matt. It seemed the flash back was there to make this film a racial revenge flick yet the movie as a hole would of been better without it.

The thing about Jennifer Jason Leigh's character is... I don't think gender mattered. I get the sense that Kurt Russell's character would have treated that character the same regardless of gender. In your mind replace Jennifer with a male actor. The motivations and actions of that and the other characters remain all the same. Only the references to gender change.

Tarantino's still got it. As for the length, there was no time during the movie in which I felt the need to doze off or want things to wrap up. Sure, the characters talk a lot before things got violent but I never felt that it was too much or too boring because Quentin always has a way to write dialogue that keeps you interested and immersed in the characters, the setting, and the story. Yes it is violent but the story justifies it. It's a western with lots of guns used by badass wild west characters so of course it's going to be violent. I thought the flashback was necessary because I do want to see how the characters got to where they were and who they are and how they actually relate to each other. All of the main actors' performances were amazing. The entire time I was immersed in the characters, the dialogue, the acting, and the mystery story. This film really keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you enjoy and are familiar with Tarantino's style then you will most likely enjoy this. I personally put the Hateful Eight up there with the likes of Reservoir Dogs and True Romance (written by Tarantino). 9.5/10

As always with Tarantino movies I thought the dialogue was fantastic and the first two hours were unbelievably suspenseful. But the cartoonish violence Tarantino is known for just didn't fit this movie

I think the flashback was absolutely necessary to give some background to the gang. I think, they are really cool guys, and I liked them a lot, all visible three of them. They stand together, they are smart, they are funny, so without the ruthlessness of their massacre of the Haberdashery - who'd know they are no better than the rest of the hatefuls?!?

Can someone pls explain to me what an intermission is, and how its only in the 70mm format?
@akaElleLatham
@akaElleLatham 9 жыл бұрын
+Jun Kazama An intermission is a space of time for the audience to leave the theater to go to the restroom or have a break. This intermission is exactly 12 minutes long and then the movie starts in the last half. The film was shot in Ultra Panasonic 70mm so in order to get the full effect, it needs to be viewed in 70mm on a film projector. Fact: QT used the same lenses that were used to shoot Ben Hur in this film.

This movie is a stoned masterpiece. 10/10. I watched it twice. In the last 1 hour Tarantino just plays the audience like keys on a piano. The high point is the conflict scene b/w Samuel L.Jackson & Bruce Dern . Thats the best fucking scene of the year 'All he wanted was a fucking blanket!'. Its undeniably Tarantino's best movie since 'Pulp Fiction', I mean you just get that shear pleasure of watching a movie, its a pure movie experience. Ennio Morriocone's score is just mind-blowing. Its gonna win the oscar. Fuck I loved it.

I would have trimmed a bit of 2 scenes, but otherwise it was near perfect. So much subtlety to some of it that I think may have been missed by many...but I'll be honest, before the opening credits were even done, I was ready to forgive Tarantino for any wrongs he might do before this very long film was over. Just brilliant.

***** Jordan Levy I'm seeing it at the Cremorne Orpheum, Sydney January 14th or something. Tarantino is indeed a gifted filmmaker. Great writer but I don't think it's fair to compare him to other great writer/directors. They just have different styles. Other writer/directors may not have the snappy dialogue Quentin always delivers, but you could argue some advance and progress their style more often than he does.

Race has nothing to do with this movie, in a sense it's about the deception of how we get closer to each other under the guise of lies, the mystery felt like the last thing i was thinking about watching this masterpiece. I personally cry rewatching the movie and get a sense of every scene tying well together but that end always gets me. Pride, revenge, and love are at the heart of this movie and no one talks about channing tatum who gives jennifer leigh the best scene in the movie.

I thought Daisy Domergue was undeveloped in comparison to the men and I thought that the flashback was an unnecessary flashback. I enjoyed Tarantino voicing over at one point and wanted a flashback to Daisy's life to explain her more. Otherwise, the progression from the crucifix to the stage-coach to the cabin was fascinating and visually beautiful. The first act climax shocked me and made me sick in the right way. It was powerful, but my complaints bring it down to a 4/5.

It's an odd movie to put a rating on, cause I think of the individual moments and pieces and when you break it down I loved each and every moment of this movie. But as a whole I was extremely underwhelmed. The cinematography is top notch, gorgeous to look at, the dialog was excellent, the acting exceptional but in my opinion the first part of the movie moved so slowly which I didn't have a problem with cause I liked what I saw and felt like it would all pay off. Which it did, but it reminds me a lot of Godzilla 2014, not in writing or acting but in a sense that it kept building, and building, and building and no movie whether a movie about giant monsters duking it out, or monsters duking it out in a cabin is big enough to ward off the feeling of blue balls. The first half was too long for its own good and builds a massive amount of tension that falls off too quickly. I'd say it's a great film, but it suffers from grandiose expectations.

The flashback of Sam Jackson was great. It could have been pornographic and that would have bothered me. It was so horrific that it just told me more about Sam Jackson's character. Sam Jackson is the MVP. Y'all are crazy.
