Then as the song ends, Kuririn and Trunks start to despair and Vegeta fires the attack, to complete silence, with an eerie song starting to play once we see the gigantic beam of Ki flying out of Earth, complementing the terrifying display of power being shown. Technically, most of what you called “leitmotif” are actually themes. The leitmotif themselves are smaller parts of the same, little note sequences that represent ideas; close to what you said, but you can’t combine whole themes together, you’d just end up with musical sludge or a Pitch Perfect style mashup. Motif are a smaller portion than that. There are two motifs in the Piccolo themes you showed, one being the “BA-da...DA-DA-da-dam” bit, which is small enough to be combined with other characters’ motifs or emotional motifs, as I suspect happened in the Gohan training music. It’s something that requires a control freak level of planning to get right, or a ton of time with the finished cut of the movie or series, so looking for an implementation of leitmotif in a weekly series might well be a glimpse of madness.
@Sawngawkuh4 жыл бұрын
It would, but fortunately, there's an easier alternative when it comes to DBZ. See, most of the tracks used within the show itself by the Z era are actually reused from the movie scores, so most of the leitmotifs you'd find in them are actually associated with all the heroes, antagonists, and other ideas featured throughout them. As such, to truly identify Kikuchi's use of this technique, one would have to view them to get the full picture (and he does a lot of thematic interplay here and there, like in this one unused cue for movie 3 where he plays with a motif for Goku also used for the final stand off, as well as having Piccolo's and Turles/Tullece's themes "duke it out" in the middle). When trying to identify them in the show, things get a bit muddier because of the aforementioned reusage. The placement team tended to focus more on tone rather than staying true to the use of theme outside of appropriate usages of Piccolo's and Gohan's themes, as well as a rare instance of using Chaozu's theme from DB Movie 3 for when he makes his sacrifice against Nappa. Movie villain themes tended to be attached to the likes of Freeza (who had Wheelo's motif), the Androids and Cell (which had Cooler/Coola's Movie 5 and 6 material) and Boo (Broly's theme was usually used for him). Kikuchi has motifs whipped up for most of the Dragon Team that tends to go unnoticed within the series itself, and it's a really shame the placement team didn't keep up with his thought process as best as they could.
@Mulletmanalive4 жыл бұрын
@@Sawngawkuh You’ve probably hit the nail on the head there. The Dragonball themes shown do show use of the technique and based on what you’ve said, actually had a composer to make the changes, as opposed to what became the norm later in all tv, to have a unit composer made a “bed” of tracks, which are just slotted in by the editorial team. The finales might warrant their own stuff, though apparently not here from what you’ve said, but otherwise it’s just dropping in the “Goku fights” track and calling it a day... I’d contend that it’s not really leitmotif shenanigans if you don’t have a supply of new music to smuggle them in with. To quote Mr Plinket, “you might not have seen it, but your brain did...”
@Sawngawkuh4 жыл бұрын
@@Mulletmanalive It really is a shame, since, when listening to them in their original context, Kikuchi goes all out on the thematic development of many ideas, with most cues in each film score playing with certain leitmotifs to some extent (be it another rendition of one or just mingling multiple motifs together when appropriate). One of the most notable evolutions of an idea was the Saiyan theme, which was a reoccurring idea introduced for the TV series as a villain idea, but from Movie 4 and onwards, evolved into a theme for Super Saiyans, with its motif being utilized for most transformations and some fights. It's also a notable victim of this disconnect between Kikuchi's thematic intent and the placement team's thought process. If you were just watching the show all the way through, one would likely notice its melody being used as a leitmotif, but what it's associated with would most definitely be difficult to identify, as its various renditions reused from the films are usually just placed in dramatic moments there. One variant originating from the Bio Broly movie is even erroneously referred to as Kid Boo's theme, despite the idea existing since the very beginning of Z.
@flamingdoge62423 жыл бұрын
If you’re interested, the JoJo OST (particularly parts 3-5) use the concept if leitmotifs wonderfully, and I would recommend it. I guess David Produce gave Yugo Kanno enough time to do his magic, as his compositions are always high-production/on the more complex side

The over the top voice acting and phenomenal sound design, not to mention the great artistic choices by David pro. all reflect Araki’s vision on the series perfectly. Hell, the old part 3 movies explain perfectly how boring JoJo could be if treated like a generic shonnen. Another series well defined by its music, and is also noted to have been a major source of inspiration for many well known composers these days when they were kids, is music from the first seven seasons of Thomas and Friends. Most of its music from that seasonal range is iconic, and has its own motifs you can hear amazingly well. Even as the music evolved to be, I guess ‘shorter’, you could still hear much of the original theme inside the shortened newer themes. It is really sad when, season 8 onwards, they changed the music (while still catchy as the original) sounded more ‘kid-friendly’ than the prior tracks. Certain themes that many say is iconic enough to be known without prior knowledge about Thomas, are the following; - Thomas and Friends opening theme - Thomas the Tank Engine’s theme - Edward the Blue Engine’s theme - Henry the Green Engine’s theme/The Flying Kipper - Gordon the Big Engine’s theme - James the Red Engine’s theme - Percy the Small Engine’s theme - Toby the Tram Engine’s theme - Devious Diesel’s theme - The Breakdown Train’s theme - Runaway theme Look up and listen to any one of these pieces of music, and they themselves tell stories about what’s going on about either the scene or the characters themselves. Thomas’ character theme is joyful and gives hints that he makes mischief like a young child (hence why most kids gravitate towards him). Edward’s theme has a nice bounce to it that hints he’s very kind and helpful (practically defining to who he is). Gordon’s is fast paced and has a kick fitting for one who is said to be “the biggest and proudest engine of all of Sodor”. James’s theme is very jazzy and smooth that tells you he’s quite vain and arrogant, but reliable when it counts. Devious Diesel’s theme has a slickness to it that immediately tells you he’s not someone you should trust. Anything from Thomas and Friends seasons 1 to 7 you can pick apart, and there were certain cues from Dragon Ball Super I’ve noticed could be traced back to our little blue tank engine on how to tell us what’s happening or who this character is through music alone… Plenty of KZbinrs have made plenty of covers/remixes of music from Thomas and Friends that sound incredible, so it should tell you the power that music has on people…

Honestly, I love this video, as I love music theory. That said, I would be curious to get your impressions on the overall Faulconer score of English Z and the Menza score of English GT. I feel going into the Faulconer Score would tie back to what you stated in this video, with music early on being "placed throughout" without tying into anything, but having actual leitmotifs used later on, particularly in the Buu saga.
@goldenfighter19864 жыл бұрын
DBS has an amazing soundtrack. Don’t forget some of the early soundtracks either. Some great ones are Golden Frieza’s theme, Time to Strick Back, Birth of a God, and Earth’s End.

I want to observe that Piccolo's Jr Leifmotif already plays a lot during the King Piccolos arc, and its meant to be used as the high tension combat music. I am pretty sure the actual Ma Juniors Leifmotif was intended to be the one played during Drums birth and then reused as Piccolo+Nail show up before Freezer, as it serves as a more straighforward character feature.

The thing about piccolo's death is that when the theme plays you'll notice that while it's a lot more lighthearted and soft, it also seems to convey at certain parts that while he is changing, piccolo was conflicted to have made the decision to protect Gohan.

All I want is Falcolner back. That’s what made Z such a phenomenon for me. Every bit of that score resonates with me deeply and I listen to it regularly while exercising. Some of my favorites being Perfect Cell’s theme, super sayian 3 transformation, and especially Hells Bells. I’m also a fan of the Heavy Metal soundtracks they put in the DBZ movies. I guess I’m a product of my age/environment but I wish we’d get some of that back as Dragonball just doesn’t feel the same to me without it
