Just to add a few footnotes to your documentary: * Symphony the night started off with sluggish sales but became a Greatest Hits title, even earning PSM magazine 3rd greatest PS game of all time. *Richter being 'Lord of the Castle' in Sotn stained the Belmont Bloodline, meaning no Belmont could wield the Vampire Killer without harmful side effects-including their lives. This led to the story of the Belmonts tying in with the Morris clan, heroes found in Bram Stokers Dracula, as they and other Vampire hunters took over stopping Dracula til the Belmonts bloodline was restored again.

Haunted Castle (in America and Europe) or Akumajou Dracula (in Japan) for Arcade actually came out before Castlevania 3 on NES. The guy who did the soundtrack for Castlevania II did the soundtrack for the arcade game too. It was pretty obscure and a rare arcade game. It was also mind numbingly difficult, so it's not surpising many people forget about its existence or omit it from history of Castlevania youtube videos. It's available on PS4 as one of their "Arcade Archives" games on PSN. It allows you to play the Japanese, American and European versions of the game, as well as change the difficulty of the game including limited continues and absurd damage like the original arcade game. There is also an online high score so you can compete against other players and PSN trophies.

Order of ecclesia (i spent significantly less time on this game and my 8 year old self was never able to figure out how to get the long ending after you kill shanoas brother but in that time the game imprinted itself into my childhood memories) 3. Simon’s Quest was the most popular early game, the first one released so early in the nes lifespan that there wasn’t that much supply as the system got popular. II got a cover on Nintendo power so they had to make that a major manufacturing focus so people could find it in stores. 3 they made the least of because of a chip shortage on the late 80s. When IV came out it was one of a sea of titles for the new hardware. The others never really got the spotlight with II being the one that was the most accessible unless you owned an nes before April 1987 and were looking for new games to play.

Don't know if they knew this when coming up with the name but "Castlevania" does have a meaning. Sylvania is latin for woods or forest and Castle come from the Latin Castellum, Castlevania or Castelsylvania would mean the Forest of the Fort. So the land would be called Castlevania and the castle itself is called Dracula's Castle or The Demon's Castle.
@NocturneCesarito3 жыл бұрын
They chose it because it sounds like Transylvania and it immediately reminds you of vampires, but that's it; the translation makes no sense since it was picked by japanese people mixing english and latin words; Transylvania's original name was Ultrasylvania (Ultra = beyond Sylvam = woods) which translates as "Beyond the Forest" as hungarian monks spoke latin and named the town translating literally the hungarian expression Erdő-elve (Yes, I googled this part!)

I miss 2D handheld Castlevania. Order of Ecclesia was ten years ago and the last real canon Castlevania. The last one not made by an outside studio. I mean, I liked Lords of Shadow well enough, but it feels like a completely different kind of game. It's not even a Metroidvania and it's from a series that's half of that genre! On side note, for years my girlfriend (who actually is a gamer) thought it was called Metroid Mania, not Metroidvania. And she thought it meant the developers were obsessed with Metroid! =)

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. You need to play it. It's SOTN, just under a different name.
@DeltathRiylaan4 жыл бұрын
@@DCLT05 I've played it. It's clunky, ugly at times, some of the mechanics are bad and the story is mediocre. But it's still a pretty decent game. 7/10. Not nearly as good as SOTN, though Miriam is pretty cool. I think Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is pretty good, too.

Absolutely amazing video. I love your short clip of Dark Souls/Bloodborne being shown when talking about Castlevania influence. I always thought that the game could have just as easily become a Dark Souls clone as it became a God of War clone. Dark Souls really did feel like a true 3D Metroidvania game, where attack placement and character movement really mattered, with a whole interconnected world that you slowly opened up with power ups and switches.

Nintendo could port the gba and ds titles to the Switch as a collection, but that will just remain a fantasy for now. However, the same can't exactly be said for the NES games. The Switch has the NES app where you can play old NES titles so the original three games are more likely to get in the library. If you wanted to over extend then maybe Super Castlevania 4 which I think is not as likely since it specifically was a SNES title. IF we can get Castlevania reps in Smash Ultimate then why can't we get a few Castlevania games on Switch?

@rahnyc46 жыл бұрын
part 2 is a good experience, if you enjoyed the first one. the combat is better and faster. the down side is that they add little semi things in between the combat that slows down the pace. couple of stealth segments and stuff like that. i actually enjoyed it, though. i may play through it again. graphics is great on pc.
@emperorwai6 жыл бұрын
It was a beautiful game though it was just as linear as the first game. You continue with the protagonist from the first game and, if you played the DLCs from LoS, you know who Gabriel becomes and how. The story gets alittle convoluted and even has a merging of two very notable charaters of series together. Patrick Stuart returns as Death, which is a bonus because your character actively works with him. It's worth a play through.
@yamyite6 жыл бұрын
For me it’s not a patch on the first LOS which smashed it! Two has patches of vibes like the first one and just as you think it might be getting interesting it takes you somewhere else in the game and never really gets going. That being said you can pick it up reality cheaply now so judge for yourself. LOS 1 - 9/10 LOS 2 - 4/10 if i was scoring it

I always knew that Bloodstained was a combination of Symphony of The Night (the subtitle Ritual of The Night was not at all subtle) and the "of Sorrow" games with shards instead of souls, but I never knew about Order of Eclisia and didn't realize just how much it borrows from that game, like the central village, the sidequest, female protagonist who uses magic with a friend who becomes evil, and some other story elements seem pretty similar.
