We do have some sources taking about the wrestling style where a belt was worn. Pietro Monte, writing in the late 15th century, states that in both Britains (referring to Great Britain and Brittany in France) states that no holds were allowed bellow the waist, and wrestlers had to be thrown on their backs to count as a fall. The same two rules are also found in Richard Carew's Survey of Cornwall, published in 1602, though probably written years earlier.

Any Tudor/Jacobean/Stuart Era English language reference to a "longsword" is referring to a single handed sword with a long blade, not a two handed sword!

@bubbagump2341
@bubbagump2341 Жыл бұрын
@@davidemelia6296 Certainly not in the English language and not in German, either. "Longsword" as a term for a two handed sword is a modern HEMA term. Historically they were referred to as two handed swords!

Wow, I only asked for a video like this a few days ago, that is service! Is there really no documentation on wrestling up to that point? I'd be really interested in a continuing series on this, although I'd have to ask that you maybe speak slower if you could... I'm assuming that you're keeping the videos short to spare your sanity with editing and schedule, but a longer video with more in-depth context of fighting styles would be really cool.
@EnglishMartialArts
@EnglishMartialArts Жыл бұрын
Just for you mate! I deliberately went for a faster paced video than normal to try to fly through it as quickly as I could. But yes, you're right about scripting, filming, and editing a video for every single day being a bit of a killer... As to wrestling. There is some, but nothing I'd class as hugely reliable.

@mgunnermusic in some ways yes, but not quite as much as I'd hoped. Even with nearly 30k subs, and daily content going out I still find myself about one zero off being able to survive off this place.

@@EnglishMartialArts recently I've been putting out main videos weekly, and then just making tiny snippets of the videos for shorts. The main videos grow at a snails pace, but the shorts are doing waaaay better and getting me x10 as many subs. What I don't know is if those sub's actually carry across to the main content. Small promising signs, but I don't know
@EnglishMartialArts
@EnglishMartialArts Жыл бұрын
@@mgunnermusic The impression I get it that shorts can grow your subs pretty quickly, but it doesn't have much of an effect on the views of your longer videos. But we should maybe jump on a zoom call and have a chat in more detail about numbers and stuff... See if we can help each other out.

The problem with making 'content' instead of proper videos is that you are just repeating the same generic bunk that has been repeated for the last 100 years. There is no evidence of incorporation of the comapany of masters. Henry VIII issued the same type of warrant as James VI/I but a warrant only authorises the named person to act in the authority of the crown to enact that which is written on the warrant. THere si no incorporation nor patent for fencing masters. Is there any evidence to suggest the masters of defence (not the comapny of masters) continued to try and get guild status? We know they had legal recognition from Elizabethan laws and fencers only needed license from two justices of the peace to run a school. The law stating that 'all' Englishmen must practice with a longbow always forgets the fact that in this time peasants were not legally recognised as citizens and so were not subject to the law and perpetuates the misconception that peasants went to war or that yeomna were 'lowly'. War was fought by Lords, Gentlemen and Yeomen even into the civil war. This is five minutes of secondary source that brings nothing to the table. If you are going to do a part two perhaps you could do some research and bring to light some of the truths behind the fancy stories made up by the victorians? Maybe dispel some of the myths you have peddled in this video? This tired old nonsense that sits in every book on the subject citing the same secondary sources is a bit tired these days. X

Your crappy backyard video of your mates 'practicing' fencing in your backyard with too-loud music blasting over the top of it adds even less. Go take a look in the mirror. And why capitalise 'Lords', 'Gentlemen', and 'Yeomen'? Those are proper nouns? 🤣
@strtmnky
@strtmnky Жыл бұрын
Because you have no intention of portraying any kind of historical accuracy. Got it. Perhaps, just out of respect for all the historical researchers who spend days trawling through original manuscripts in the basement libraries of various establishments and the historians who spend their time trying to correct inaccurate beliefs that people have due to the peddling of nonsense, out of respect for those who dedicate their lives and careers to trying to further our knowledge and understanding of the past, you could write 'for entertainment purposes only' on your work. Just, if you have any respect for the work historians do....
