I remember the Bret Hart-Isaac Yankem cage match with Jerry Lawler suspended in a shark cage. Lawler, legitimately scared of heights, started having a nose bleed (which he deliberately caused) and was hollering for Vince MacMahon to get him down. This was before Vince was revealed to be the owner and was still only thought to be a commentator.

17:50 - One of my favorite moments of the early genesis of the The Attitude Era. Bret’s promo was absolutely incredible and the way they played it with McMahon made it seemed like there was a high level of truth behind it all. Everyone from Bret, to Austin, to UT and Micheals were at, or near, their absolute peak and the angles were awesome. 1997 was my favorite year for professional wrestling. The WWF changed significantly and NWO was still going strong in WCW.

I’ve heard that even tho it didn’t appear on TV til the 1980s, that the cage was originally designed like that back in the 60s or 70s when Bruno Sammartino was feuding with THE SHEIK (Sabus’s Uncle) over the WWWF Title. Made it easier for them to work and for the Sheik to climb with his crazy boots.

Like many fans who's only access to wrestling in the 90s was cable television, I have no knowledge of what you call HOUSE SHOWS. I understand the general concept of course. However I would absolutely love a video detailing the history of the house show circuit and how they were similar/different than TV events. In particular, how did house shows work while wrestlers were also doing TV work. Could anyone get tickets to these events? I think other more casual fans would appreciate a deep dive into the concept of house shows and how they were used in major promotions.Thank you so much for creating these videos! You are very talented documentarian and your videos have been an ENORMOUS BRIGHT SPOT in my life. Keep up the good work. This is easily my favorite wrestling content on youtube!

The Big Blue was easier for Hogan to climb, and was also easier to get a handheld camera between the bars to get a good shot, and in general was easier for wide cameras to focus on the wrestlers. The ability to drop the cage from ceiling was a game changer. Before that, any cage match required a lengthy intermission to set up. As my dad commented to me after the Snuka/Muraco cage match (Buffalo, NY edition), It took twice as long to set up the cage as it took to have the match.

This is a great history of the cage. May interesting talking points. The traditional mesh cage is my go to because it looks more hardcore. Never a fan of the blue, but it's easier to see what's happening more clearly in the blue & black cages. You always seem to find the best vintage photos- the Hakushi photo is badass! It's odd that a good number of Diesel title matches were dark matches, even winning the title in a dark match. Great show of confidence.

I grew up a NY WWF wrestling fan. The Big Blue Cage meant BUSINESS! When you heard 'steel cage' the excitement was palpable. The very sight of the cage on match day was awe inspiring & you knew something special & brutal was about to happen. Years later while watching NWA I was so disappointed that their "steel cages" were simply large panels of backyard fencing. I couldn't believe it & to me as a little kid that fence 'cage" was just oh sooo lame.

IDK it always seemed weird to me that you work to get locked into a cage with your rival and the way to end the feud is to essentially run away. I've personally always preferred pins and submissions in cage matches. The sniveling heel should be made to get his comeuppance with his shoulders pinned or by tapping out rather than not being able to escape which is what they usually did every time leading up to the cage being booked. It's all semantics though, if the match was quality the finish could be anything and still be good.

@knottheory79220
@knottheory79220 4 жыл бұрын
@@Mayhem5150 In the carny days and early territory days, that was actually the idea of the cage. They didn't use the cage itself as a weapon back then (well I'm sure they did but that wasn't the draw), but it was a common heel tactic to just run away from the babyface and lose the match by count out to either prevent a championship loss or for the heel to just taunt the face and work up the crowd. The cage was intended to force a definitive end to the feud.

You missed the kennel from hell match which utilised the old blue cage. I know that match gets flack but I loved the concept and honestly thought it could be refined n done better 🤷‍♂️

Lone Wolf Urbex UK I came to write this too. Apparently the match was a flop because the dogs they got were not trained properly and freaked out.

Request: Can you please put your recommended matches from each video in the video description? I often can’t write them down and forget to go back and take note. If not, no biggie...I’ll still watch anyway. Your videos are great, keep up the good work.

I feel the hell in a cell is used too much and I feel the standard steel cage should return to take it's place in matches that don't require things taken to that extreme. Great video 👍

8:39 wow just 11:95, good times calling my local cable company & ordering events before my mom kicked my ass. Fun fact, I used to own the CASSETTE TAPE of that wrestlemania theme song. Macho man's song was dope too. Jake, boss man had decent songs too

I was at a house show in Philadelphia in may 2004 and they used the big blue cage. Pretty sure it was hbk vs randy orton. From what I remember they brought one over that was sitting at the spectrum. Guess they forgot to bring a cage. If I ever find the photos Ill post them. But I vividly remember marking out because they were using the old blue cage.

Tito would get his new belt two weeks later on tv 👍. Check here on youtube (or on network for better quality) Tito Santana and Ricky Steamboat vs Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake from Maple Leaf Gardens..this is the start of Valentine Beefcake team and Tito working his way back as no 1 contender . ..one of best tag matches I ever saw.

I can't say I have a favorite of the Blue cage era, but I can clearly remember seeing it twice on the house show circuit when WWF came to Augusta, GA USA in the early 90's, as my step dad would always get tickets for the family when they came to town as he was a huge fan of guys like the Big Boss Man, Taker, Ric Flair, etc.. he would also do the same for WCW a few times with the 2 of us even ending up at a WCW Nitro taping in Augusta, GA. 👍

The whole reason I hear people disliked it was because (like most things in WWE) it was designed to mask violence and made the cage more family friendly. It looked safer, there was no blood, which is kind of funny since it was probably more dangerous in that it had no give.
