Wrestling Bios Presents - The Story of The Mega Powers in the WWF
Special Thanks to Hibiki TMD for the voiceover work in this video. For more "Terry Plays", wrestling and retro gaming, check out his channel: / @hibikitmd
What happens when you put 2 of the most popular wrestling superstars together in the late 80s? You get the "Mega Powers". Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage had incredible fan support in the old WWF, and the decision was made to bring these two huge favourites together to form a tag team, The Mega Powers. When Hulk Hogan saved Randy Savage from a 3 on 1 situation on Saturday Night's Main Event in 1987, the 2 men would become a force within the WWF that had fans cheering with approval.
When Randy Savage won the WWF championship at WrestleMania IV, it turned out that the Macho Man was actually getting set up to go head to head with Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania V. To get to their destination, the Mega Powers had a tough on-screen breakup that was built up over months and months. Fans tuned in to see how the story would play out and, ultimately, the Mega Powers would explode on Pay Per View, drawing big numbers in the process while generating further revenue for the World Wrestling Federation.
This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at The Mega Powers in the WWF. Topics covered include:
02:06 - Saturday Night's Main Event: October 3rd 1987
04:01 - The Mega Powers first (untelevised) matches
06:43 - Randy Savage wins the WWF Championship at WrestleMania IV
09:21 - The Mega Powers at SummerSlam 88
12:19 - The Mega Powers officially break up on The Main Event
14:09 - The Mega Powers Explode at WrestleMania V
16:12 - Randy Savage becomes The Macho King
- Much More!

I like Hulk Hogan BUT I ABSOLUTELY CAN'T STAND IT WHEN HE DOES THAT WHEN SOMEONE ELSE WINS THE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT title he stands in the ring and walks around to try to get all the attention! As much as I can't stand the Ultimate Warrior! Hogan again did the same thing! Walking around the ring when it should have been the Ultimate Warrior's moment

This is one of the greatest stories in wrestling history. Fans were emotionally invested & it was partially based on reality. Randy was so over he could have easily carried the company for a year+ as a monster heel. They went with a heel world champion who in kayfabe "couldn't speak English" for a year in Yokozuna, & he deserved it. Fans knew that in Randy, the business would never see a personality like his again in their lifetime. The way he carried himself. His robes, his wrestling style, his fashion, his charisma, his swagger were all unmatched. He was so original it could not be duplicated. His first heel run, his Mega Powers heel run, & The Macho King heel run were all his best work. His promos alone for WM 5 were gold!!!!

People always forget that the Mega Powers was about 2 things. Giving Hulk a break at the top and building a big money match for Hulk. Randy and Hulk already feuded in 85 so this was a way to put a fresh spin on a match that was already done, and it worked perfectly. People always says Hulk shouldn’t have beaten Randy, but in the end, this was always a way to make sure Hulk got back into the title picture in the most epic way possible.

ShadowAngel and in what way did that affect a consumer of the product? That’s great for Vince in the fed and Ted in Dubya-cee-dubya, but him being a better draw does not mean anything to anyone watching the product. I see you always come back to this argument on every video you comment on, and yes drawing power matters for the benefit of the business, but it has zero impact on rating their ability to work in the ring or with the stick. Often drawing comes down to the right place at the right time.

I remember seeing that story when I was young. Great stuff. Hogan made wrestling look fake, because all his fights always had the same script: Hogan takes a beating, gets strangled, and just when the referee is about to end the match, Hogan revives, shaking, receives a punch to the head, stops shaking, receives another punch, points the finger, gives his opponent the boot, drops the leg, wins...

It seems the prettier a woman is they are often more evil and use their looks to get what they want. I'm not saying Elizabeth was that way plus she always had a sense to be innocent even after WCW turned her heel. And it played well when NWO started and her love for Randy started to reemerge and the horsemen kicked her out but when she got with Luger look at the end result :(

This was my first feud as a kid when I fell in love with wrestling. Listening to Conrad Thompson and Bruce Prchard's podcast he said to him a a kid it was the biggest feud he ever saw, but to Bruce Andre the Giant was still the biggest. I guess it's a generation thing because this to me was my first and always the biggest, then HBK and Bret( I couldn't figure out who to cheer for I refused to boo Bret even after he went Anit American) to my teen years Austin and Rock altough by then I picked Austin but it was still huge. When I was little I was totally behind Hulk and cried like a baby when Liz got hurt and then Randy smacking Hulk. To me this will always be the biggest and look how these stories were built over a year much different then today's standards. Great Video as always wrestling Bios you always deliver and this now my Favorite video of yours since to me this was truly the greatest.

As weird as it is to hear these stories, you can’t say his protective nature wasn’t somewhat justified. Wrestling is filled with stories of ladies in the business leaving their significant others for one of the other boys. I’m not sure what others think but I have a theory - could be that Randy was over protective of Liz became she has issues with alcohol or drugs even at that early date ? That he had to keep her from going over the edge ? Was that why she managed to get herself in the situation with Lex so quickly ? Any thoughts on this?

lol its so surreal going back and re-living these moments from my childhood. looking back on it now as an adult, its so crystal clear that The Macho Man was the better performer, but obviously with Hogan's popularity, larger than life personality, and overall marketability, he was not going to be kept down for long. Just a shame though because Savage had all of these things as well and I honestly feel like he should have been made as more of a threat than what he actually was.

That’s so obvious it’s not worth talking about. Hogan was the face of the company. There were times Austin didn’t have the belt during the attitude era. But he was obviously always the focal point of the company. Same with Cena

Man how I wish they would of really let Savage get over and run with the title with a win over Hogan here. Would have been awesome. Savage will always be one of my top 5 favorites of all time. But unfortunately the WWF was so protective of Hogan still at this time.

If it is true, that Vince McMahon preferred the buff guy with the Ultimate Warrior nipping at Hulk Hogan's heels.. that's why I think McMahon preferred to try and get Warrior over than to keep the belt on Randy savage, unfortunately.. with Warrior beating hogan.. I think it would have been a good couple years of the warrior and Savage as one and two

It's amazing story telling by the writers to give the points of view of both Macho Man and Hogan and your definitely making a strong point of Macho Man being the face and Hogan being the heel as we have all grown up and time has moved on. The crazy part is that art was imitating life and the stories that everyone who was apart of the WWE at that time has spoken on the real life treatment of Elizabeth by the Macho Man that sounds highly emotionally and mentally abusive in a number of ways.
