Yes indeed, Alan was perfect as Shane - but so was Jack Palance as the gunfighter Wilson. Without those two , Shane would not have been a great Western !

My late Father's and my Western Hero! Shane was and always will be my favorite movie. Mr Ladd went through so much. He seemed to always meet life's challenges 'head-on'. The movies he has made, will stand the test of time. An incredible Actor, wonderful Father and Family man, and a very dear friend to so many in the movie business. Gone-but not forgotten!

This western is iconic because it portrayed all the elements that were key in the production of a fine piece of work. The cinematography of the landscape, the editing, the performances with regard to character development are deemed paramount in its entirety. Even the dog could act with regard to the scene in the bar before the climatic outcome.This picture is where one saw the connection of all the characters and appreciated the scope when it came to the just and unjust, the right and the wrong of handling matters, friendship and conflict. It displayed the west in its raw form. It depicted life in the old-west all its faults and its unwritten code when it came to dealing with issues at hand. This was a well made movie and truly showed that Alan Ladd was a great star. This is a must see classic.

Shane is my favorite movie. Have seen it literally dozens of times. Alan Ladd was perfect for that role. Part of the genius behind that movie was showing the scenes from the point of view of the child Joey. Reminds me of To Kill a Mockingbird because that movie is shown from the point of view of the lawyer's children. The last 5 or 6 minutes of Shane are iconic in the history of film.

Thank you for sharing this. Alan Ladd will always be my hero known as Shane. Still, to this day after 35 years when i first watched the movie, and countless times since then. I read the autobiography Ladd: The Life, The Legend, The Legacy of Alan Ladd: A Biography and when I finished it, my heart was sadden by what he went through when his mom died and of course how he died. I believe that he always carried the guilt and images of when he was a child and coming home to find his mother and the awful way of how she died. Sometimes we carry ghost from our past and let them haunt us through out our lives. I also believe that he was a good man and a loving father and caring husband. I also feel that he had a hard time loving himself. He will always be my hero as a decent man and my favorite cowboy, Shane. Rest In Peace Shane.

wow - I've seen loads of "how it was made" movies - including Alien and Star Wars. I never realised he was a film star in his day, before he became a VERY INFLUENTIAL executive. Both Alien and Star Wars were troublesome films that the studio was a whisker away from pulling the plug on - but Alan put in a good word and so, in a very understated way, allowed movie history to happen. Clearly a guy who loved even the promise of a good movie. That's a true film fan if ever there was one. He was an optimist that was rewarded, rightly, a million times over for his executive decisions.

Ladd was transcendental in 'Shane'. What a performance! The movie is one of the greatest ever. No, it's not just a western. it delves deep in the mysteries of human existence. Alan wanted to be taller-- yet he was a big star. Much truth is omitted-- for example his love affair with June Allyson in his older years. I think he was separated from his wife at the time. Alan's best film was probably Shane, but his films with Veronica Lake really stand out and made money; Lake was the ideal partner for him because she was only about 4'11 or so. She was extremely beautiful and had a lovely , kinda simmering voice.

A very touching tribute to an important icon of the American Cinema. I have a question though: with all these well-positioned-studio-executive sons and sons-in-law, why are there so few good prints of Alan Ladd's movies? Why are his films not available for "love or money" on DVDs or on TV? Why every stupid Wayne or Bogart vehicle gets more play than any of Ladd's movies??? And so his legacy slowly recedes into oblivion, with all his loving family and friends calmly looking on. :(

Shane is my favorite movie, or at least one of them. Strange, because I usually abhor violence in a film. There is a lot of violence in Shane. But also a lot of beauty and truth, and warm romantic emotion. It is a mark of a great actor, too, when he can make you love a film that you should hate just because he is so great in it. That is what Alan Ladd did for Shane.

They always make such a big deal about how short he was, but if he was like 5'8" he's taller than a lot of male stars today. He was an average height guy. Geez! It must have been some work to get Lizabeth Scott to be interviewed - she was a very introverted woman. Maybe she felt that connection with Ladd.
@edwinbos3159
@edwinbos3159 9 жыл бұрын
Jake Drew Not to split hairs (based on his military record) he was actually 5'7" but I agree with your point that he was hardly a "midget". In fact, Bogie was 5'8" and nobody even commented on his height. Bogart played with Ingrid Bergman, who was an inch taller than him, and she had to wear flats in all their "Casablanca" scenes (plus they did some trick photography to make sure that their height difference didn't show). It didn't make "Casablanca" any less memorable.
@JSB1882

Right! They always talk about Alan ladd having to stand on boxes, but I doubt that was true because his height isn't that short. I think Tom Cruise is about Ladd's size too.
@sertorrhenclegane
@sertorrhenclegane 8 жыл бұрын
+Jake Drew That is true, but put him against a guy like Clark Gable, who was 6'1, or John Wayne, who was 6'3, or Errol Flynn, who was 6'2, he would look like a dwarf. He clearly wasn't as I'm about the same height as he was, but I always feel dwarfed by friends that over 6 feet tall. It's a matter of perspective.
@JSB1882
@JSB1882 8 жыл бұрын
PeterBluth Oh true about the male stars, but compared to most women I can't see why he'd have to stand on a box at 5'8". That had to be made up. I know Bing Crosby had to stand on a box but he was like 5'5".
@sertorrhenclegane
@sertorrhenclegane 8 жыл бұрын
I merely brought up those guys because they were the standard bearers for leading men. Tall and strapping not average height and strapping. As for working with ladies, well, when you're the same height or an inch taller it just drives the point home that you aren't those guys.

Ladd is screwed over again by tmc! His birthday is Sept 3rd and they aren't playing any of his movie's. He was in a few film noir and some of the best Westerns Shane Whispering Smith Branded Red Mountain Drum beat and was voted most popular actor in 54I have depression and I'm a alcoholic a but im5'11. Ladd was around 5'6 HD was worried about his height but he was bigger than most in being friendly family man and he did most scenes in one take! I always admire him! He seemed to be the under dog in Hollywood and maybe in his marriage? His wife his manager pushed him later in his career to do movies that weren't much good and had him all over Europe away from home where he wanted to be! She was money hungry and it weakened him physical and mentally

Too bad he internalized the criticism about his height. James Cagney, John Garfield and Edward G. Robinson were short men too. Robinson was not only short, but ugly as well. Difference was, they not only didn't hide it, they flaunted it. They made up for it with attitude. I bet if you'd poked fun at Cagney or Robinson about their lack of height, they'd have knocked you on your ass.
