Steve McQueen was one of Hollywood's highest paid stars -- and one of its most difficult, most rebellious and, when he wished, most charming.
His story is told with film clips from his greatest performances, including The Magnificent Seven, Love With The Proper Stranger, The Cincinnati Kid, The Reivers, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Bullitt. Also shown are home movies -- and the recollections of those who knew him best, including Steve's first wife, Neile McQueen Toffel and their children, Terri and Chad, fellow actors Chuck Norris, Karl Malden, Don Gordon, as well as directors, producers, agents and the racing buddies who saw it all happen. Narrated by James Coburn.

He was a very competitive person. Always had to win. I had such a crush on him when I was a teenager. He had a quality that none of the other male actors had. He was just sooooo cool and manly. Paul Newman imo was the most handsome man ever in Hollywood but McQueen had an edge that can't be put into words that made him so attractive.

This was a great documentary that showed all sides of the actor, good and bad. I trust it was accurate since it was narrated by James Coburn who I also respect and who was part of that scene. I credit McQueen for being one of the creators of a genre that was to become the true grit films of the 1970s. Looking back with hind sight he probably should have produced Le Mans strictly as a documentary. It would have been a revolutionary award winning documentary rather than a box office flop. As it stands today it is a great time capsule of Grand prix auto racing from the 60s-70s era. Hats off to you Mr. McQueen for your performance on and off camera!

Now that I found out that he honed his skills in the NYC scenario, I like him even more. What a loss! He died so young. He should have stayed with the Filipina star (Ms. Adams). She was his anchor. She also took care of him in every way. Next flic for tonite is THE WAR LOVER. " I belong to the most destructive group of men...." John Burgoyne: you seem pretty quick to judge McQueen. No doubt he was wrong about his drug use and adultery. But ... was he wrong about his love for his children, his dedication to the Boys Republic and the fact he was a devout believer in God? Sometimes, it takes the sinners some time to come around.

Steve McQueen understood something that most just cannot seem to understand! He was a Proud Conservative and to be an Open Conservative you have to have the BALLS to TAKE ON THE WORLD OF VULTURES! This is what made hime "The KING of COOL"! Competitiveness is a bitch only to those that cant compete. Steve would take on the World and thats what made him so GREAT!

To elaborate on that, there's a movie he made called "The War Lover", as a B-17 bomber pilot in WW2, where his commanding officer is reprimanding him for not flying a mission according to plan, he just gives him that smirk, like, hey! I got the job done didn't I? It's on YT, though not the whole movie.

You know it's funny.....Steve was a student of Bruce Lee's and why it's not mentioned is beyond me. There's footage of Steve In Lee's backyard and Bruce mentions him in the Berton interview. Many stars studied under Lee, including James Coburn and others. Bruce was such good friends with Steve McQueen and James Coburn, that they were both pallbearers at Bruce's funeral in Seattle. Also, Chuck Norris and Joe E. Lewis, both great champion tournament fighters, studied under Lee......Many things missing from this documentary....
@algore1993
@algore1993 8 жыл бұрын
+Sonny Crockett chuck norris never "studied" under Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was an actor and an amateur martial artist. Look up any interview with Norris and you'd see he consider Lee a good friend. That's it
@sonnycrockett2079
@sonnycrockett2079 8 жыл бұрын
Maybe "studied under" is a bit much. But even Joe Lewis has said that he and Chuck became much better tournament fighters afer studying with Bruce and Chuck has admitted MANY times that they were friends and learned from each other...but to quote Chuck and this is my last post and check on the matter, so no reply is necessary...from a 74 convention: "Bruce taught me alot about what real street fighting was and how to apply it and this helped me greatly in professional competiton. In a real fight? Well, no-one beats him."

+Sonny Crockett This brilliant, fast paced documentary on Steve McQueen was done six years after his death in 1986. Bruce Lee was no longer in vogue in popular culture by the 1980's, but that changed with the release of the 1993 biopic "The Bruce Lee Story" starring Jason Scott Lee.
