Growing up in the NY/NJ area during the 1980's, one of the best hours on TV were 11pm to Midnight on channel 11 WPIX. It was The Odd Couple followed by The Honeymooners and every weekday night, during the summers, I would watch them on a 13'inch b/w TV my older brother gave me. Year after year, episode after episode, I saw them all, plenty of times. This episode of The Honeymooners was among the best of the original 39. I still remember some of my favorite lines, "Hey, Ralph, he's even bigger than your friend Shirley", "A pox on you and all your ancestors" and of course, the unforgettable "Get a load of fatso over there" Honeymooners is a classic show that I never tire of watching.

The actor who played "Harvey" was George Mathews, a year after George appeared in this episode, he was a supporting cast member of the 1956 film "The Last Wagon" Directed by Delmer Daves. George played Sheriff "Bull" Harper who tracked down Comanche Todd (Richard Widmark), and took him prisoner and also co-starring a very young Nick Adams. The film was shot on location in Sedona, AZ near the mouth of Oak Creek Canyon, George played his role, much as he did in this Honeymooners episode, "tough guy". From what I've read and seen, even though it was live-to-air, Gleason wanted the cast to not worry if they occasionally missed a cue or blew a line. He said real-life conversations are never word-perfect or neatly synchronized, so they shouldn't aim for perfection. To that end, he preferred for the cast to be under rehearsed rather than over rehearsed so that there was always room for spontaneity.

Jackie Gleason: "The Honeymooners lasted as long as it did, because it was funny." How true! He ended the series after the famous 37 because he felt that the material was getting thin, they were running out of ideas, and he didn't want to cheapen it. Absollute classics!
@johnferguson40892 жыл бұрын
This comedy is classic. It stands up extremely well even today which is about 70 years since these episodes were made. Jackie Gleason was fabulous and Art Carney was fabulous how he played the 'idiot'. Comedy gold!

Like others, been watching this show since I was a little kid in the early 60s. Never get tired of it. The amazing thing was finding out they only filmed one season, it seemed like many. Ed and Ralph, one of the great comedy teams ever.

This is one of my favorite episodes. Very special to me. One of my best friends dad is in this episode. He played George. We watched this together when I was at my buddy's house. We were both students at the High school of Performing Arts in NY at the time. It was really inspiring to see what a great actor could do.

I grew up watching both the Odd couple and the Honeymooners on WPIX in the 1970’s. I had to buy the box set when I moved out of NYC but it wasn’t the same, I now watch them both on classic channel called “MeTV” in California and it’s like being back in the Bronx with my brother and cousin. I never tire of Ralph and Norton, I read their lines as they perform their roles, simply classic.
