It kills me that one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen is known as “that domestic violence sitcom” among those of my generation. It’s not great that Ralph’s gesturing is milked for comedy, or that it’s even a thing, but the show is so much more than that. If you actually take the time to watch the episodes, Alice is always right. Any jam Ralph and Norton get into could’ve been avoided or lessened had he only listened to his wife. It’s not at all about Alice or Trixie needing to be “put in their place,” it’s never framed like that. Ralph is a hothead, the show knows full well. And the arguments you see is partly what’s great about The Honeymooners, for as was touched on in the video, it’s merely showcasing issues Americans went through at the time and to some extent still do. I feel like people believe this about the show only armed with little knowledge about it that they’ve gleaned from outside sources rather than confirming for themselves whether it’s completely accurate, and that’s a real shame. This show is a far cry from your Father Knows Best type of program, but nobody would know it based on this reputation.
@TheBillStickers4 жыл бұрын
After watching this video and reading this comment, I think it's safe to say I'm ashamed of my ignorance and that there's more going on than I had been lead to believe. I still think it's wrong to threaten like that and perhaps many have seen to poke at that though it definitely is also wrong to ignore the deeper point. The character was deeply flawed but kept trying to be better; that is so relatable and human.

The reason why it has the domestic violence reputation is that people of our generation are butt hurt postmodernists that can't in anything but memes.

It's because people form their opinions based on the word of other people who formed their own opinions on the word of others. Even without watching the show, any sort of investigation into it in a video like this shows there's more to the show then Ralph's threats. But most people aren't willing to invest even a small amount of time challenging their own opinions no matter how half baked they are.

The Honeymooners were like "The Mamas and the Papas".... only around for a short time but when they were the stars were aligned; literally. Jackie Gleason knew how to play an audience and had a profound understanding of performance, sets and quality having grew up trying to become a known performer. That coupled with his up bringing gave him many tools. Audrey Meadows and Art Carney were incredibly gifted and striking at improvisational acting as well. Art Carney had some great performances on shows like the Twilight Zone and others.

None other than the great Orson Welles called him "The Great One". He was not only a tremendously funny comedian, but a serious actor as well as musician and composer, amongst other things. I grew up watching reruns of The Honeymooners. I never understood the opening of the show with the cityscape and the moon as a kid, I didn't put the title of the show together with that intro, most likely because I didn't even know what honeymoon or honeymooner meant at the time, I just knew I liked it. There where many foregin versions of The Honeymooners, in Sweden we had "Rena Rama Rolf", which I loved as a kid and still do to this day =). The episodes where basically the same, but it took place in the 90's (when that version was made). And to be honest, most of the updates worked much better in that version than in The Honeymooners, but there where also some changed parts that worked much better in The Honeymooners.

I want you to know, that this was awesome. Thanks so much, for this candid mini - documentary of the Greastest sit-com in Television ever, and the tribute to the one and only "Great One," Jackie my Boy Jack. The Gleasonator! Less than a week ago my wife and I went to the Laundromat on Rossville Ave. in Staten Island, and we happened to bump into a fella we became acquainted with one year ago, who is from Bay Ridge Brooklyn. He's 84 years old. While I'm only 52, I'm in constant pain physically, and have been fighting for disability for over 3 years; Jerry, our 84 year old super slim, energetic, Brooklyn buddy is moving like the energizer bunny. Somehow we get talking about the Honeymooners, and he relayed a personal encounter with Gleason in Miami. Jerry and his wife were on their Honeymoon down in Florida, and had just sat down in a highly recommended Italian restaurant; the waiter brings over an expensive bottle of Champagne to their table, and Jerry says to him, " we didn't order any Champagne, we just arrived, and didn't order anything yet." The waiter said, "it was from that gentleman over at that other table." "He bought it for you, and said, Congratulations to both of you." It was Jackie Gleason, who noticed them to be a young couple recently married, and he wanted to salute their wedding vows." I said, " Once Jackie was on the Tonight Show with Carson, and Carson revealed a true story about Gleason's tipping techniques. He once asked a waiter, " What's the biggest tip you've ever received?" The waiter replied, " $100 Sir." Gleason proceeded to double that amount giving the waiter a $200 tip, now making it the new biggest tip he'd ever received. Jackie, said, " By the way waiter, who was the person who gave you your biggest, $100 tip ever, before Today's $200 new biggest tip ever?" The waiter shyly responded, " Why it was you Mr. Gleason." We enjoyed exchanging Honeymooners stories while folding clothes, and I reminded him of the movie with Brendan Frasher, Christopher Walken, and Sissy Spacek, "Blast From The Past," when Walken, the father, in a fallout shelter rigs the T.V. to play reruns of the Honeymooners, and exclaims, " people will never get tired of watching this show!" A friend of mine did Dinner Theatre theme shows, like Tony and Tina's wedding, and The Godfather Mashugguna; Anyway, He winds up writing a New Dinner Theatre show called, "Ralph Kramdens 50th Birthday party!" It was a huge success playing for several years in major wedding reception halls everywhere! Yes, although I only watched reruns in syndication of "The Honeymooners," I actually GREW UP with these characters, and Today in my clothing walk-in closet, I have 2 spitting image dolls of Ralph and Ed in their proper attire, hats and all. They're about 20" tall. Bang! Zoom!

@@victorjohnson7512 You're almost right. Pert Kelton was fired because she was a commie-pinko although the official CBS fake news story was that she was too ill to do anymore live tv. Audrey Meadows, then, begged for an audition with Gleason but Gleason turned her down saying she was way too pretty. So Audrey hired a photographer to take photos of her first thing in the morning. The photos were sent to Gleason and she got her audition and the rest is history. Pert Kelton did make a return appearance in one of the Miami Color Honeymooners as Alice's mother with Shela MacRae as Alice. I believe that was Pert's final TV appearance.

But I'm convinced The Honeymooners is hands-down the greatest sit-com of all time. Not only is it flat-out hilarious, but the themes of love, friendship. struggle, family. hubris and humility, reaching for the brass ring but never quite reaching it that flow through the "Classic 39". MASH, Seinfeld, All In The Family...all brilliant and funny and culturally important. But the genius of The Great One simply can't be topped.

You nailed it beautifully. My brother and I were barely in grade school when this premiered as a weekly half hour sitcom, but even without knowing what the gags were about, the pratfalls and innuendos still appealed to small kids. Indeed, it was a family show for the whole family. I hope you hung onto you original work covering the HM from start to finish! I can just imagine what a marvelous work it must be, just based on the above. PS: There was a mini series in 1955-1956 of the Kramdens and Nortons going to Europe where each week they were in a different country. There was also a Christmas Special they did around 1975 where Ralph and Ed dressed in drag and played alternate roles as their own mothers. It was hilarious. Would you have any info on these? There was talk in the 80s of doing a Honeymooners reunion series (or perhaps TV movie) showing the Kramdens and the Nortons retired in Florida and living at a retirement community (think, "The Villages") and the hijinks continuing into old age. I think it might have worked, but I can understand why it never happened. There was also an episode which I'm surprised you missed in your review - which was when Ralph and Alice tried to adopt a baby, but the birth mother changed her mind and wanted the baby back. There was an episode full of strong emotions from all actors involved. How about the WB spoof, "The Honey Mousers"?

Absolutely fantastic video regardless of having to edit it. I never realized Jackie Gleason was the sheriff in Smokey and the Bandit!

It's so sad to me how many people don't get that. the legacy of this show is dumb past-bashing jokes characterizing it as nothing but a show about a guy hitting his wife. the _entire point,_ what made it funny, is that he's all hot air but ultimately impotent in the household. as usual, men's troubles get swept under the rug so more attention can be put on fictional women's problems.

As an adolescent, I watched Gleason in "Gigot" many times on the late, late movie. I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it in this video. I will buy it & watch it. I remember it as being very good.

Wow, I always knew the name Jackie Gleason and was all ready to check his IMDB after this video to see if I'd seen him in anything, but when you mentioned Smokey and the Bandit the penny dropped. To an 80s kid that's how I know him, and I'd never have expected it was he same guy!

Now it is clear as to why virtually ALL sitcom couples feature a lovable, knuckleheadish working class husband that is short on looks and often chubby, but has a gorgeous, knock-out of a wife.
