I always just thought Greg was a middle schooler, they’re self-centered, that’s just part of their developmental stage. Middle schoolers are horrible, my middle school years were awful, I’m an adult and I’m still scared of them. Plus, he’s growing up in a dysfunctional family that basically ignores him because he’s the middle child and Maddie gets away with everything no matter how horrible he is. Rodrick and Greg probably take their anger of their parents and Manny out on each other because they can and their parents only care if they hurt Manny. It’s also an extreme, comical version of the birth order of siblings; the oldest tries to distance themselves, the middle child is ignored and the youngest gets away with everything.

In regards to how greg and rodrick get along, middle schoolers tend to view their siblings as the devil no matter what. What doesn't help is the parents (the mom) trying to force a relationship between two age groups that just don't get along naturally and ironically causing more friction by picking favorites, and playing them against each other.
