50 years of participating as a support role in a losing war is hardly "itching to test the new weapons". I assume the intent was that Humanity didn't want to reveal its warlike nature if it didn't have to, hence the restraint, and hence the decommissioning of crap afterward.

One thing that not a single story has mentioned is our culture. I'm shocked that many of these stories don't mention it, nor care to add in a reaction from their species over our culture. The fact that we fight each other in war is always mentioned, but it's never mentioned that when we aren't at war, there is always competition. Competition between people or companies is a very warlike act. Beyond that, we also play many warlike games. Call of Duty, Warthunder, Hearts of Iron, Helldivers, even cartoonish games like Splatoon show our capacity for war.

There is one HFY story, where they mention, to one bird-like alien some video games. When it asks them, what are those, after the description ("you had to fight against something bigger and scarier than yourself, which sole goal is to kill you") it could only compare them to their warriors VR training program. I think Deathworlders made mention of it, because I know aliens on Folca found it weird at first that humans had their competitive nature when it came to exercising, and they even learned about Warhammer 40K because of some super soldiers who took to painting figurines to practice delicate movements with their new, larger bodies as a result of their rigorous training, body altering Corti drug, and diet.

" - What have you done?! You blowed up the entire Relphox system! Are you MAD...?! - What did you expect? There were 20 planet - should we capture them one by one, and waiting for their reinforcements to arrive, when we are barely passed the third one...? This was both faster, also more cost-efficient, AND it significantly decreased our death toll as well! "
