This is horrific. Edith could have done good and had a good life. Sounds like all the adults were all very problematic people but wowww she sounds awful. I was couch surfing between ages 19-21 for 18 months of my life after I left home at 19 due to domestic violence and family dysfunction. I was working 30 hours a week in 2 different little retail jobs while surfing the streets of Geelong in Australia which can get expensive. I never turned to drugs and stuff but it was really scary. Eventually at 21 I got a place and lived there for years. I'm 28 now, got a partner and married for 2 years, together for 7 years total, own a home together, due to have our first baby in Mid-March and I'm in my third year at university doing a double major in arts and science. Homelessness and hard experiences don't excuse bad behaviour and you can still have a beautiful life in the future.

I'm from Glasgow, and I can say that people from Glasgow have a weird relationship with our cities murdery reputation - it's a grim humour kind of thing, but I think most of us are really just desensitised to it - that being said, Glasgow has improved so so much in recent years, violent crime has really dropped dramatically. A while ago, Glasgow was voted the most violent city in the UK, and in the same year it was voted the most friendly city in the UK - the anecdote we tend to use to explain it to other people is usually '(a Glaswegian) would stab you but the they'd call you an ambulance after'

I see what you mean, but we don’t really know what the norm was for the surrounding homes in relation to this home. It could very well be that the three men were naturally loud at night, be it arguing, or just messing around. This being around 1am, considering they were known heavy-drinkers, might just be when they typically get plastered and rowdy. It’d be easy to block out the yelling if you hear it every night. The 16th was also a Saturday, so maybe no one was in the two closest homes to hear it happening. As much as the downstairs neighbor could be an outlier, hindsight really is 20/20. My own experience, just the other night: Heard five loud pops at around midnight and thought someone was using a nail gun. We’ve had new construction in our neighborhood and houses are just being finished in the cul-de-sac behind me. On occasion, there will be a crew working on some of the quieter tasks well past midnight, especially if the house is almost finished. Woke up the next morning to a cop asking if I’d seen anything suspicious in that area during the night/early hours of the morning. It was a damn drive-by. My first thought, “Oh fuck, is everyone okay?!” My second, “So THAT’S what that was… WOW.” Luckily, the shooters had very shitty aim and were quickly arrested due to posting about it in a group chat. As far as Anthony not yelling, shock can do crazy things. He’d just witnessed his friends being murdered and knew he could be next. Because it was so early and we have no witnesses, it could be possible he spent all that time trying to climb out and didn’t want to alert Edith and the boys to his attempts by also yelling. If being bold enough to stab two people so casually, who’s to say they wouldn’t be bold enough to simply walk outside and wait on him to climb down to kill him. All because he exposed himself by yelling for help.

@@monah2070 Here in the UK there are so many different accents for such a small country. The British accent you're probably referring to most is RP which stands for 'received pronunciation' or BBC English to put it another way. And then the friends were next, last one trapped?? That's not horror movie material, that's something worse. This isn't just a story, remember- this really happened, by the hands of people who are just like you and me. I can not even begin to imagine the absolute terror and the pain of being savagely ripped apart... Hey Eleanor, please please consider doing the zephanie Nurse case. It's got quite an amazing turn. I am so sorry to those victims and their families.

My personal theory is that the son John believed his mom's BF David was her abuser, and that his friends were guilty as well. His attack was full of rage. We don't know what Edith and David's relationship was like, but it seems that John's perception of it was that it was hurting his mother in some way.

@francesbrown6990

IDK... its possible, I have professional and personal experience of these sorts of people. People like Edith have children to use as pawns or for leverage against men/ get benefits. These children are normally the woman's last priority, they are typically neglected (especially emotionally) and can also be abused. These children rather than disown or distance themselves from the mother as they get older are actually very loyal to them, I suppose its a form of truama bonding. And what you find is they will often compromise their own safety and welbeing to "look" after their mum (mum of course doesn't give a shit if their child will get into serious trouble as long as it even mildly improves her situation). Its like some kind of learnt behaviour for the child, or their version of normal, but the only way these children recieve validation and approval from mum (Dad's always abscent) is when they do crazy shit no loving parent would ever ask their child to do. This is my theory here, but the fake rape allegation could have been the pretext but really the subtext is unfit abusive parenting, women like this need to be sterilised before they do any harm IMAO. Hint she called her boyfriend when she got out of prison but only made contact with the son when she needed a hand cleaning up her mess. Son clearly must have been a child when she was first sent down so god knows who was looking aftet her child when she was in prison.

The idiom "to get on like a house on fire" comes from the time of the great fire of London when wooden houses would mean flames spread easily. It's been used in Britain since those times to describe two things that go together well. Originally it was meant to describe what we would now call toxic relationships (just because wood and fire goes well together doesn't mean it's a good thing!), however the modern use is simply to get on well with somebody. I teach English and I study etymology and forensic linguistics as a hobby, so knowing the origins of expressions is literally my job! My friends call me "Suzy Dent!" lol

I can’t imagine how can you be in a relationship with a man convicted of such a horrific crime. Love really is blind. However , what is even more terrifying is that Jon is allowed to walk freely in the society. 🙄

Thank you for covering this respectfully. I am glad there were no unexpected gory images, you warn very well, and describe it well enough that we don't need graphic images, which is great. What they did was awful, but what amazed me the most is how flat-out stupid the culprits really seem. They don't understand how bad what they did was, not because they are truly evil necessarily, but because they are just too dumb to comprehend any of the gravity of what they did. I am guessing Edith consumed some level of alcohol during her pregnancy, or drugs, or both. Her son is not all there. I have relatives with FAS, and from my research/experience (I have friends who have adopted children, and both have levels of FAS), and it seems to me that John displays symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome. FAS does NOT make anyone evil or violent, but is does affect parts of our brains that aid in comprehension and decision-making skills, amongst other things, for instance one person I know who has FAS cannot remember why he is always late for the bus, because he can't connect that the longer he waits to set off, the more likely it is he is 2-3 minutes late. He is 14, but everyone knows that no matter how old he is he struggles with this, and everyone reminds him and support him when he is struggling, and he is a great teenager. I think John and his friend could have become good people, but were terribly conditioned and this was the result. It's not an excuse, but this is an example of how a child who has issues with that when not raised right can become the bad kind of risk-taking individual because they do not grasp "what happens next" very well. Edith herself is most likely not the brightest bulb in the bunch to begin with, John did not have much in the way of intelligence to inherit in the first place. She is a monster, and made one out of her son as well. Good thing they have each other though because no one else should be aroung either of them. I can understand the women in prison, they hated her too. She just seems really dumb, annoying, and evil to boot.

Eleanor you are amazing, thank you for doing these 😍 Has anyone else been looking at her crystals in the back ground? It took me ages to realise they are crystals as because of the black looking ones and the huge one I thought it was a teddy for a while lol, or is it just me?

Sticking up for Belfast here, there was a bloody Civil War going on back in the day our murder rate is about the average for the UK now thankfully. However if glasgow was above Belfast that's bloody terrifying. Love your work as always! Xx

very good point. I'm from down south but I've spent a lot of time in Belfast, now live over in Scotland. I've always felt much safer in Belfast than Dublin. I think Belfast has those stats purely because of The Troubles, and most of the violent crime that continues to this day is tied to the aftermath.

Glasgow's knife crime issue was almost entirely within certain communities. I think when you hear murder capital it makes you feel like if you'll step foot in it you'll get stabbed. But in Glasgow these huge high statistics all came from young working class kids basically left to fester in the schemes (council estates) in the outskirts of the city, where previous generations were dumped when the slums were demolished. And these kids, suffering from generational poverty, often seeing violence in their homes growing up, and have early access to substances, plus the absolute lack of social and community spaces and entertainment in these very utilitarian schemes with little bus access to town, turn to violence to unleash all this pent up frustration. Then once someone from the other side hurts your side you have to avenge them and you hurt one of theirs, only now the other side needs to avenge their fallen. Becomes an unending cycle. Only it did end, thanks to an intense carrot and stick approach from social work and policing. It's actually very interesting the kinds of things they did to basically end this knife crime epidemic, which I think say a lot about human nature in general. Humans are just animals and we need to be able to live in a way that provide for our need for community, entertainment and opportunity. I read an amazing article on it but god knows what paper it was in. It went waaay into detail. But yeah it wasn't that long ago, my ex's sister had friends who died from knife crime in the Glasgow schemes and she was about my age (just starting our 30s). And I knew it was bad being number one but I actually hadn't considered how bad you really had to be to be number one until realising Belfast was still second to it despite basically having a civil war at the time.
