The two things on that show that were never safe (in living rooms) were ceiling fans and TVs, which used to drive my mother up the wall because the designers seemed to hate the two things that made a living room a *living room*, especially when they were redoing houses in warmer states. What I didn't like was that the description of the show was that the neighbors were supposed to redo the rooms with the help of a designer, but the designers always seemed to think they were the ones who had final say. Because it quickly became clear that the designers already had in mind what they were going to do before the show started so asking the neighbors what they wanted to do meant nothing. And I always wanted an after action special where they went back to some of the couples 6 months or a year later to see how much of the redesign they kept, etc.

They also had some disastrous episodes one i remember, they built a shelving unit to show off the owners tea pot collection (20+ expensive teapots). The shelves were floating and supported via wires from the ceiling through the shelves. When they were doing the end decoration bit the whole shelving unit collapsed breaking all of the teapots...😮 The majority of the designers made comfy home designs but you knew if you got Lawrence or this one woman your were in for it. We had handy andy instead of ty, average looking British bloke that was working class with a regional accent vs the majority of the designers and presenters who spoke more southern English/posh.

As someone who was in my 20s and obsessed with this show back in the day, this is the iconic Trading Spaces reaction, but I’d love you to see the most quintessential all-around episode - the one where Hildy used hay on the walls. You called it in the designers. Frank was basically a craft guy who was was obsessed with kitschy paint techniques. Sweet, but I always cringed at his Grandma-went-to-the-bargain-craft-fair aesthetic. Doug was one of the biggest villains, along with Hildy. They did have a few designers who both had skill and seemed to genuinely want the homeowner to like the end result. Genevieve Gorder was my favorite of those. She managed to spin out from this show to have a solid solo career with a different TV show, a line of home decor products, etc. But Doug and Hildy both seemed to be there primarily to manufacture these horrified reactions in the reveal. Those drove a lot of interest in the show f oh r a shirt while, but it also killed the show, IMO, because it was so obviously mean-spirited.

He pouted, manipulated, and forced his ideas against the home owners’ request. We always hated to find he was one of the designers on the episode. Oh wait, just saw another’s comment. Vern Yip was amazing and classy. Genevieve was playful and fun. There was a tall, dark haired lady whose designs were insane. My heart goes out to Pam, I think that brown room is hideous too... Thank goodness they didn't paint the fireplace, and it can all be reversed. We had a show like this here in the UK in the 90s, called Changing Rooms. As I recall not all the designs were enjoyed by 'our' home owners either. One of our couples had a very expensive teapot collection, and the designer created a hanging mantle/shelf unit to show them off. It broke and every teapot was destroyed. Oops. We also had a show similar called 60 Minute Makeover, and yes any painting/wallpapering was done within that time too. It was to surprise someone who was due home, and had no idea a makeover was even happening. The 60 minute makeover team was massive - lots of people in multiple rooms to get it done, and the 60 minutes took place in two segments of 30 minutes each, with a 'tea break' in between. All painting/wallpapering was done in the first half to give it at least a chance to dry for the second half.

We had a version of this in the UK called Changing Rooms, and my family (mum, dad, brother, and sister & i) would watch this religiously every week. It was all the rage back then, but it makes me laugh watching back and seeing how tacky & outdated the designs and diy hacks are. God, the designs in the 90s/2000s are so cringe worthy. At least most designs from the 80s and before are still retro and cool Love this series 🤍

Christ, this was so fun. I grew up watching this show with my mom too, Becky. This was a nice trip down memory lane. Please do more!

This was your best episode!!! You picked the one trading spaces that I hoped you’d pick. It was an epic fail and the woman was sooo mad. Once again ladies, you added to great women, added new and fresh ideas and brought this channel to a new level. Now I can’t wait til Friday comes! Great job👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

This episode gave me the laugh that I needed today. All of your reactions were so on point. 😂

I loved it when shows started appearing that had some type of transformative element - whether it be decor or beauty related. I remember watching Trading Spaces & thinking the premise was how well do you know your neighbors, so the makeover would represent that. And I always enjoyed it the most when they did something that made the other happy! But the more uncomfortable episodes created more drama naturally & since audiences tend to like drama - that's probably what the producers hoped for.

I was in my early 30’s when this episode aired and I clearly remember my reaction. Doug oozed arrogance and rarely listened. That brown room design was jarring to our eyes after the country kitch of the Nineties. Also, the husband mentioned to Paige that the room didn’t flow with the rest of their home. I think that’s a valid issue - it should all flow together somehow. I can imagine they had a big painting party and scrapped the fireplace surround. The brown denim might have survived but I think those walls were painted a pastel…maybe soft blue or green.

You’ve got to review the episode with Hildi doing the room in flowers!

❤ love this idea of this, please 🙏🏻 do another one as soon as possible! Much better than the other OG of um… I can’t remember the name of the show. The one with those crazy, HIGH energy looking bedrooms that you won’t be able to sleep in them! Also, GOOD MORNING!

I used to watch the show religiously. There was the one designer, I forget her name, but every time she would do an episode I would cringe. I think the one time she put like or something on the wall oh my gosh. but I used to love the show. I don’t think that it was on HGTV, but I wish they would bring it back. Thanks for bringing me back the happy memories.❤

The brown room needs (a lot) robin’s egg blue! Something with life! OR flip the colors, put the brown on the bottom and the off white on top.

You guys need to watch the one where Heidi puts grass, (hay)all over the wall.

Or the one where she painted cross sections of pink and purple even on the ceiling 😮

Loved Trading Spaces! I used to watch it every day after school & While You Were Out was on after. That would be a great one to rewatch too!

I watched this with my mom every week. Doug and Hildi were the villains!!! The one with straw in the wall was one of the most outrageous episodes. Oh and the jungle themed bedroom. Do more videos on the BAD Trading Spaces episodes!

Huh, spaghetti strap top over a sleeveless top 🤔 as a busty girl who struggles to get coverage up top, this could be a game changer! Thanks Rachel! 😘

Yes, you described that wallpapering tool perfectly. It really does work well to get all those little holes in the wallpaper and then when you steam it or wet it, it comes off easier.

34:35 Need Trading Spaces episodes with the other designers…there were others who had more successful less DIY designs. If you think Doug was chaos…you need to see Hildi Santo Tomas!!

I LOVED Trading Spaces. I am 100% sure Doug designed that room. I think he purposely did these kind of controversial designs which usually upset the homeowners. I'm also 100% sure he did not, absolutely did not, feel bad. He and Hildy were crap-shoots. Laurie was my favorite. Always classy. Frank was a very nice man but not a great designer. However, his esthetic was kind of popular at the time. Actually met him and own a piece of his art, which is very good, BTW.
