This Story is Classified as HFY , but what does the Mean?
-------------
HFY is a story/series that takes a “human element” in either humanity or an “other” (race/species or object) that exists in a “setting” (future or other world/universe) with varying levels of culture, technology, society and history that help show in some shape or form the potential good or bad for humanity’s race/culture.

The description of the aliens as all being considerably smaller and requiring more support to move around ( only two legs being unique ), would imply that they all evolved on planets with higher gravity than earth not less. Not that it affects the story at all, I'm just a nerd who's mind gets caught up on those things.

if the planet had less gravity then surely in order to survive they would have to adjust in size since the atmosphere would be unable to hold as much air. for example at various times in earth's history, when oxygen was abundant, life grew to absurd sizes. when oxygen was limited, life tended to shrink. I grant this assumes that atmosphere density is directly proportional to gravity strength.

So your theory holds no air. The bugs got big because of higher oxigen. But dinosaur got bigger and so did mammals with lower oxigen. So please try a theory that has real support. Lol

Cheers. I don't like how all HFY tends to be "Humans are combat gods and chaotic space orcs", but are still innately understood. No writers put anything tragic in, and few make real efforts to try and make humans actually alien to aliens. Hence tall, thin, consistently irrational and contradictory, and so abhorrently alien in nature so as to inspire fear in any sapient species.

@@richardseaton1570 Personally i'm never fond of the ones that focus on how we are so peace loving and make us into a hippy race with no balls that do everything for the pursuit of peace. They always feel played up and in no way a realistic dive into humanity in the greater universe. I am a massive fan of the more aetherial human depictions though making humans truly strange to the other races (i love how this one is going for the fey especially) or depictions of space religions (which no matter what are always cool in my book) and otherworldly abilities relating to their faith. I also really love the more brutal depictions of humanity.

@@Neo3151 I feel ya. To be honest, I've always wanted to see a more scary telling of humanity. Like how star trek did the Terran empire kind of deal, humans going out into the universe and taking what they want. I've got nothing against more peaceful versions of humans in space, but I feel like sometimes people forget just how petty much of humanity is.
@ianharrison5758
@ianharrison5758 Ай бұрын
@@Neo3151my favorite stories are the ones that express that the inherent humanity within us desires peace when it’s possible, but demands blood when it’s owed. We are a social collectivist species with sapience and thus individuality that often bucks against that collective nature. We couldn’t survive without Eachother, if hominids weren’t social and inclined to peaceful coexistence we’d never have been able to survive in the environment that forged our ancestors. At the same time, humans have also always been one of if not the single biggest threat to human life, we have a sense of otherness and tribalism ingrained in us just as deeply as our loneliness and inability to function as species outside of groups. We need eachother but we are our own competition at the same time. It can be a very thought provoking story if they don’t try to make some moral grandstanding ass story with the humans being allowed virtue signal our peace and also be justified in our wars. If you wanna talk about our peace you must talk about our carnage, and if you want to speak of our atrocities you must also speak on those who bled and died to slow or stop them. Too many hfy stories try to use the story as a way to say “hey war is dumb so yeah we humans chill lmao” and it doesn’t come off the way they think it does to me. The very definitions of our peace is written in the blood of our war, conflict is deeply in our nature and stories that can reflect that without making it a virtue signal jerk off session or xeno torture porn where they kill like 5 humans we glass their homeworld

It would not have been CO2, more likely it was CO which is the real danger. Carbon Dioxide is not all that harmful since it fuels plants and such it is more Carbon Monoxide which chokes plants and other green house gases that would have wrecked the world.

I've thought for a while that, to an alien, our high oxygen atmosphere (measurable by spectrography) would appear as completely toxic. They would assume that there would be constant uncontrolled oxidation events, rendering the planet completely hazardous if not outright lethal. When oxygen was initially produced as a waste product of the first cyanobacteria it killed almost everything around it. The first mass extinction event was caused by oxygen. Also, on the point of the cities budding off or dividing when they get too large, I've imagined long haul ships that could do the same. The standard centrifugal cylindrical ship hulls as capable of building on their length segment by segment. The toroidal segments can separate down to individual completely viable autonomous vessels, assuming appropriate internal provisions. Though stacks of segments more than a dozen long are typical as engines are more difficult to produce and there is an economy to scale. This way, as a ship putters around a system doing typical tasks (though especially mining) it actually gets longer, then divides about in half then it gets too long. This also solves the problem of shipyards, as each ship is capable of being a shipyard in and of itself. Populations onboard can grow and go in different directions as necessary. The idea also works very well as colony ships. This standard stacked toroidal-cylindrical design allows for acceleration based simulated-gravity in three directions, radially by spinning when velocity is otherwise constant, and moving linearly forward or back when long haul travel (and deceleration from it) is underway. Of course with procedures to accommodate for when "down" changes.

Atmosphere and Oxygen levels can also affect the height of living creatures. And being to large can be a terrible hindrance for technological advancement. Can you imagine an intelligent race the size an elephant trying to make a rocket? Or even a car for that matter. They would also need to posses the ability to create tools. In order for a race to use tools they would need to be generally weaker than the surrounding predators. After all if a species is strong from the start they have no need to rely on tools to help them. Of course different variables can also change that. For instance something large on our planet may be very small on another. This could also force them to develop tools for survival.
