Soul Calibur III's Chronicles of the Sword was amazing in my book. Building an army to conquer my enemies while unlocking new fighting styles was soo much fun. Having the main characters be boss battles was an excellent touch too. From what I've heard, SC III is not good for competetive players but the single player content was top tier for a fighting game.

Was that the game mode where you could bring your own custom character into a type of story mode with a progression map? I can vaguely remember it, if I’m thinking of the right thing. I just spammed these two alternating nunchuck moves because the AI would bug out and not know how to react to it until they got ringed out.

I agree, Soul Calibur 3 for me was my childhood game and is consider the "Top tier S+" (The Goat!) Because the character creation music is what makes me wanna keep playing this game Especially the Chronics of the sword and other game modes to unlock secret characters you didn't know it exist. Soul Calibur 3 was full of secrets, like... an adventure MMorpg game basically. It would be epic if they could remastered the game with super Graphics similar as Soul Calibur 6 and have more DLC, online matches and new guest characters.

A few things: Soul Edge had its name changed to Soul Blade in North America due to a trademark on the word edge by Tim Langdell. Soulcalibur IV released in 2008, not 2009 (although Broken Destiny did release then). Not every cutscene in Soulcalibur V is a still image (you literally show a cutscene in the video). Soulcalibur VI is a reboot (that acknowledges the previous timeline) for the franchise and I'm pretty sure Project Soul (which is just a group inside Namco) still made it. SCVI also did well in sales and reception, basically ensuring that the series will continue and have a future. Feels like you're downplaying it a bit by making it sound like it failed or just came and went. True, Soulcalibur doesn't have the best presence compared to other fighting games, but still. If this vid was made around the time SCV came out, then the title of the vid would be a bit more accurate.

Tons of characters, loads of interactive cutscenes, game modes galore, an aweseo.e character customization and chronicles of the sword campaign where your custom character is the protagonist. This game had it all. For me every game since has always felt lacking in comparison.

I just want to add my perspective as somebody who almost exclusively played in arcades until SC6 came out on PC, especially as somebody from Asia (Japan!) and still had a lot of access to arcades up until covid. Been playing the SoulCalibur series in arcades from Soul Edge until SC3, which was the last arcade release. I played it pretty competitively (well, it was pre-eSports so it was mostly small tournaments as you go around different arcades to compete) and it was my main fighting game. Anyway since I almost exclusively played in arcades, I don't really know too much about what you guys (especially Westerners who primarily played these on consoles) are talking about. Things like various modes and exclusive characters are things I only ever saw in videos like this. But especially when it comes to SC3's supposed forgettableness? SC3 was probably the most popular entry for us in arcades, if only because it was around for the longest since it was the last game as far as we were concerned. Of course many of us played SC4 and 5 on the respective systems but playing it in arcades was just so different. Like, how are you supposed to do a tournament on a PSP? So while people played the console versions as well, we would always come back to the arcades for tournaments and stuff, to play the "real" SoulCalibur. That was until slowly the machines started disappearing from arcades to make space for the newer games. In Japan, I couldn't find any arcades that still had SC3 in any of the arcades around my neighborhood by around 2017. Even the classic game arcades, like the ones with older versions of Tekken or Street Fighter didn't have them. For a competitive player like me, what's killing SC more than any of the stuff you just said, is actually the poor implementation of the online aspects of the game. It doesn't have rollback netcode nor does it have cross-platform play, which means if you bought the game on PC here in Asia, good luck finding decent matches, as many people would've been playing on PS4 instead. Or get ready to get matched with somebody in Europe and have an abysmal 8 FPS because, again, no rollback netcode. Also, what do you mean "we've already played" SoulCalibur 6? It literally has a new mechanic in Reversal Edge, which was a step in the right direction IMO for the competitive scene, as its tactical use is amazing if you know what you're doing. You're probably only talking about the story, however, which again, different perspective. Anyway to me, SC6 was a fine game, and again, this is coming from a sweaty player. The main issue was the clear lack of interest from the developers themselves, as there were only 2 "season passes" with new characters announced, and then all development seemingly stopped. With the lack of updates comes the meta getting stale, and then the game starts to dwindle. I don't mean to speak dismissively or as if I'm superior to casual console players who simply enjoy playing a fighting game here and there. But a fighting game lives or dies by its competitive scene. Having a story mode and console-exclusive characters is fine and all, but the longevity of a game and its franchise depends on how well we, the competitive players, take to the game. We're the people that spend money on all the DLCs to keep up with the meta. We're the people who buy all the cosmetics for our main characters even if others scoff at how expensive they can be. We're the people that buy the merch and stuff. As it is now, the developers don't even seem interested in nurturing the fighting game community, or at least supporting the product they already launched. We would've been the evangelists for the game. We would've been the ones hyping it up, trying to get all our friends to buy it too so we could play against each other, streaming the game, participating in tournaments, and so on. But since we feel let down by the game's developers, most of us just move on to play other fighting games that feel like they do respect us and our hobby (such as Street Fighter 6 or Tekken).
@raionbomber75
@raionbomber75 Жыл бұрын
Yo, thanks for this perspective. Biggest reason why SC3 was when the series fell off for us in the US is because the console version happened before the arcade version, so the fixed alot of bugs and they never gave us another console port, so we never got to see how good SC3 arcade was.
@rei1789
@rei1789 Жыл бұрын
@@raionbomber75 Sounds like even back then they were really bad at maintaining support for their products. :( I personally feel very salty about how SC6 could've been great if only it did some of the things that Street Fighter 6 did, like again rollback netcode + cross-platform play. I have no trouble finding matches in SF6 at all, and it's usually a great time.
@MitsuSC
@MitsuSC Жыл бұрын
Hi @rei1789 While most of what you say is true, the biggest reason the SC series hasn’t enjoyed success imo is due to the fact that the development team always happens to be completely changed over, while a game like Tekken enjoys a much more stable development period, with members in their teams that go back as far as Tekken 3. The original creator left Namco many years ago and SC was left abandoned in a way. The last true Soulcalibur game that felt like it truly had a cohesive vision behind it was SC3, console glitches aside. I actually envy the fact you got to enjoy SC3AE. Had the console version released with AE’s balancing, fixes and extra content it would have been the best Soulcalibur game ever. Again, speaking from my own point of view. I remember hearing Namco even lost the SC3AE masters so that’s why it hasn’t been re-released. But I would kill for a proper remaster of SC3AE on modern consoles, with the gameplay completely intact, more than an actual new entry in the series, at this point. SC6 was very decent and a step in the right direction.

@rei1789
@rei1789 Жыл бұрын
There's parts of SC3's combat that I really liked more than SC6's honestly. I liked that the combo system seemed more flexible and didn't require very specific and tight timings for button inputs. People could come up with their own juggle combos especially. And partly because of that, even people playing the same character could have different play styles, especially during higher level/tournament play. Like an aggressive pokes and juggles-based Xianghua vs. a confusing mix up Xianghua vs. a defensive Xianghua focused on punishing the opponent. That made it a bit more interesting to me. I feel like that's a bit less of a thing now in SC6, as each character has pretty much their own archetype now, and at high levels (yes including the pros as you might see them in Evo or whatever) you typically only ever see a character played a specific way. Mina uses her range and ring out ability, Talim is pretty good with mixup and defense as her Reversal Edge is one of the best in the game, etc. If there's anything I want to see changed in SC7, that's one of the main things. Other than rollback netcode + crossplay of course.

The character creator is my fave part of Soul Calibur. One thing that amused me was so defeating my housemate using a pink blob with an apron called Catering. Nothing beat his reaction "I can't believe I just lost to CATERING!" @EmeralBookwise
@EmeralBookwise Жыл бұрын
I'll admit that I enjoyed the creator as well, but I can't help feeling it was an innovation that helped to slowly kill the franchise. It's probably rather telling that so few other fighting games have ever implemented anything similar. Fighting games arguably depend on their recognizable roster of characters, but when you just let the players make their own avatars, all that professional character design sorta goes to waste.

SC3 is criminally underrated. Got to say this a bit of a diablo 4 situation. The way you dismissed SC3 which is BY FAR the best in the series is why we ended up with what we got in 4. Many very vocal diehard fans didnt appreciate 3 and kept crying they wanted 2 again. And so they took a step backward rather than forward. Just as with diablo 3, fans didnt appreciate it and cried they wanted diablo 2 again and so we got diablo 4 and no one was happy.

I believe so yes. I have hope that the tales of souls and swords will never die, especially since Soul Calibur 6 did well. I'm just hoping it can keep up the pace and we can get people who are passionate about the project involved with the franchise or this really will be the end of Soul Calibur. Soul Calibur is one of my favorite video game franchises and I would love nothing more than to see this series thrive for many years to come but we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Honestly if SC7 is it, I would love for them to really go out with a bang a long story with an end, plenty of characters, Wide range of Customization, etc. I feel like we can’t end on 5 or 6, give us a game like 7 that can last the next 10 years and if it does good we get 8 if not, everyone is contempt

Loved SCV from a competitive fighting game standpoint. The mechanics and inputs just felt good. Tried Tekken and always felt like something was missing. I started with Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast, which was a good game, but where me and my friends really got into it was with the second game (in our case on the Gamecube). Hour upon hours we spend on fighting each other. SC3 actually is my favorite, with a (for the time) nice presented story mode, and that special mode where you had to create your characters (which had a good creator especially for the times) and move them around a map strategically, was great. With the fourth game, I lost my interest in the series, as it felt like the programmers did as well, just a bare-bone game, and fifth entry I didn´t even play because of it...

I agree on SC3 being the best. ^^ Chronicles of the Sword was such a blast. I loved that it continued for longer than expected, and the new game + was a nice difficulty increase. I used to play it with friends. We'd each create one or more characters, I'd move them around the map, and they would each play their own characters. So many stories. Just great overall. And it felt like there was more complexity and variety to the movesets of the characters. I've revisited it after playing further games, and I just always feel like I have more combat options in SC3.

The that killed the series to me is when they wanted to make it a competition game by adding meters to guard impact, ex moves and supers. It took away the feeling of anyone being able to pick the game up and just fuss around and have a good time. I would be at parties where like 9 people would be playing it and most of them weren’t gamers but were really into it. Good luck doing that with something like street fighter

Same for me, particularly as an OG player from the very beginning. I get wanting to "compete" within the genre, but it really pushed itself too far away from what made Soul Calibur unique in the first place. "Tekken, but with Weapons" is literally what it should be. Its introductory simplicity leading into deep complexity is its strongest asset. Well, that and _amazing_ and unique character designs. No fighting game has a roster as solid as the Soul series.

It's a shame that this "next generation" game for the series wasn't well received, but I understand with the lackluster story and the majority of the cast being new offshoot characters of the originals. Comparatively, Street Fighter 3: New Generation is seen as one of the best fighting games of all time, and released in 1997. Just kind of puts things into perspective imo

Soul Calibur 2 is the best in the series with incredible aesthetic direction (character design, music, voice acting, etc.), while SC3 has the most single player content. They both had some of the best character debuts in the series (Link, Raphael, Cassandra, Tira, Zasalamel, Amy, etc.) The closest they got to good characters/music afterwards was with Dampierre in Broken Destiny, but that's it.

The problem is that Namco did not hire fans to take over franchise. They should have treated the original creators with more respect and give them more creative freedom with the game, but they took them for granted as well. They moved on to other things without Namco's involvement now. I feel the fandom are the only ones that save the franchise now. Also, Namco needs to stop treating SoulCalibur like a gunnie pig and after thought for not being as popular as Tekken. Companies, in general, needs to stop neglecting their niche franchises when there is fan demand for them. They can still make them massive profit for them, just need to have faith in them.

I would argue Soul Calibur 3 is one of the best games in the series aside from 2. The sheer amount of content and replayability it had, still hasn't been topped in even the recent entry, It was the first game in the series to introduce CAC and it's the only one that actually made your character feel unique with job/classes. You had a class system with variations on weapons and the fighting style with it. So your character didn't feel like a copy and paste of a main roster character moveset.

This franchise was treated as a stepchild of Bandai Namco's fighting games. When Akuma and Claudio borrowed that game's primary assets, I had a hunch only to be sure of it by playing Tekken 8's Yohismistu, and him having his Soul Calibur counterparts in it feels good superficially, yet its clear game has been forsaken. Even the Virtua Fighter series from Sega is using its key assets in the latest Yakuza games.
