@reubenhustler Exactly! When Pitt says: "we need to find bomb," and Giorodino responds with, "No. I'll find the bomb. You get the girl." I was sold on their friendship. No egos, just trust and faith in each other and focus on the mission.

I really enjoy this movie for much the same reasons you do. I also have a friend who loves the books and despises this movie (and I mean he royally hates this movie). Any time he would bring up the books around me I would use it as a chance to bring up this movie. It annoyed him so much to the point where he stopped talking about them around me.

@whyjnot420 I've read all of the Pitt series, and I own the film versions of Raise the Titanic and Sahara, so I can understand where your friend is coming from. I also realize Cussler likes to take simple stories and weave them into a structurally complex book with American jingoism permeating throughout. All of that doesn't translate well to screen. In the film Raise the Titanic I remember the great miniatures. From the book, it's the striptease. Sahara, the film would have been less fun if the victims of the plague had acted like the Resident Evil monsters that were portrayed in the book.

The best thing about this movie was that the lead characters seemed to be doing things because it was fun. They weren't just thrown into some situation, they were adventurers. That's rare in action movies where often the lead is just trying to survive a dangerous situation not of his own making.

A story about how much Cussler hated this movie: My dad got tickets to a meet and greet cocktail hour with Cussler. The tickets said specifically NOT to bring up the movie... But Cussler kept railing on it, unprompted. Couldn't be steered away from it once he got going. Made the whole event super awkward, apparently.

This movie got me into reading. I told my wife as we were leaving the theater that I needed to read the book because it left me with too unanswered questions. My wife, who is an avid reader was so taken back by my statement that we went directly to a book store to get a copy. The move was alright but the book was way better. Same thing about his " RASE THE TITANIC" book. can see why Cussler was upset. Since then I have read nearly all of his books and many others because this movie left so many holes in its story telling. Rest in peace Mr. Cussler.

We knew the Eisner's growing up. My grandmother worked for Michael's father and mother Lester/Margaret at their Vermont homes. I knew Michael's kids too as we were around the same age. They knew they were money and we were not and didn't hide it although as they got older learned daddy wasn't going to just give them everything. He maybe opened doors for Eric Anders and Breck but they had to work for it.

Clive Cussler writes some crazy books, but he really does live and breathe all things naval and historic. Honestly, I like this movie. I do wish it would have been more serious. I don't know how difficult Cussler is, but I know he's very passionate about the naval history. I think the movie could have served with a little less goofiness, but it's a pretty fun movie to watch. To me, it reminds me a LOT of a non horror mixture of The Mummy meets National Treasure.

The “Rush Hour” buddy cop formula approach to this movie is why it’s so good! This movie elevates the material in the same way “Jaws” does: it keeps what’s great, discards any elements that take away from rooting for the protagonists, and focuses on enhancing the character actors rather than forcing the actors to fit into tightly defined characters who, honestly, most people get tired of reading after four or five books as they fall into the same old patterns.

Great vid! A real shame this movie didn't find its audience - it is great fun. However I do feel compelled to point out a misrepresentation in your piece. I happened to work briefly with Breck Eisner (the director of Sahara) prior to him getting the movie. I can report with certainty that Breck REFUSED to trade on his dad's name, which he viewed as an impediment to his career more than a help. He turned down job offers on Disney projects, and worked his ass off to demonstrate his talent and commitment to his directing chops - which you can see in what he accomplished in Sahara (in spite of the horrible - even by Hollywood standards - backstage antics).

Cussler hated that the script eliminated his original ending in which the confederate ship found in the desert contained the remains of Abraham Lincoln, who had been secretly kidnapped during the Civil War and the American government replaced him with a body double, and that's who was assassinated. It was a 100 year old secret revealed at the end of the novel. The producers counter sued, claiming that Cussler and his publisher had exaggerated the international sales of the novels when selling the movie rights. The film is fun for what it is but it cost too much to make.

I remember seeing trailers and TV spots for this back in 2005 (was in college then), but never got the chance to see it in theaters. But I never even knew that its production was THIS troubled!!!

I would say Sahara is in my top 15 movies. Never really liked Mcconaughey but he is perfect in this movie. When I rewatch a movie it only takes a few minutes in until I know if I truly like it or not. I have watched this one 5-6 times and will watch it again. The music is one of the best parts. Everyone has their own opinion about a movie, and they very much have a right to that.

This has my favorite line(s) from any movie. "I think a man only needs one thing in his life he just needs someone to love. If you can't give him that then give him something to hope for. If you can't give him that just give him something to do"

I began reading Clive Cussler's novels when "Raise the Titanic" first came out in paperback -- I was sorely disappointed in the film version, and when I saw the stand-up ad in the theater corridor for "Sahara" years later, I cringed, wondering if they'd mangled another book. Decided to see it anyway, just for William H. Macy -- so GLAD I went! This has become one of my all-time action faves! Fabulous soundtrack, superb characterization! (I didn't really "see" Dirk Pitt until the boat chase scene, and then I was sold. He didn't look anything like Matthew McConaughey!) I hadn't read the novel for several years, and I'd forgotten one character in it, but the moment I saw Rainn Wilson, I nearly blurted, "It's Rudi!!!" Some college kids were leaving my showing, and one said, "I thought it would be something great, like 'National Treasure,'" (which I'd seen but didn't think it was all THAT), but there was a 40-something couple in that same audience -- half an hour later, I saw them at Books-a-Million buying EVERY Cussler title the store had in stock (hardback & paperback)! Personally, I think this film absolutely displays the spirit of the original novel, and it's sad that more people didn't choose to enjoy it on the big screen. It's FUN!!!

"Fun" is the perfect word for it. Yes, some "mindless action flicks" are all flash and no substance. This one has great energy between McConaughey and Zahn, good comedy, adventure, and a plot that actually makes sense and you can follow.

I also loved this movie, cast, and was a fan of the Dirk Pitt novels which are, to me, the male version of romance novels. Ridiculous action, over the top characters, crazy complex interwoven storylines. Fantastic! I wish Cussler would let more movies or series be made and ‘let go’ of a perfect adaptation. Thanks for sharing!

Cussler was like many action thriller authors--great with a cool premise, not so great with execution or character or dialogue. But there was camaraderie with his characters. They worked together and supported each other. That helped.

I have never watched this film precisely because at the time it came out my image of Matthew McConaughey was that of a romcom actor and I bounced off hard of every movie he was in. By the time my perception of him as a skilled, much more ranged performer grew I had completely forgotten about this movie's existence. I should hunt it down and watch it.

My dad was a huge Cussler fan and hated the movie because it deviated so much from the book. I didn't start reading Cussler until after I had gone through Clancy's books and needed a fix. I saw the movie prior to reading the book and am so glad I did. I understand all the movie criticisms - when compared to the book. I love both, and consider them independent from one another. I see it as Cussler wrote the "true story" and the movie is "base on a true story". I wish it had worked out because those books would make great movies.
