Throughout human history, there have been many empires that have seemingly conquered the world. Some have done it through peaceful means. While others have done it through war. Some have done it through technology. And others have done it through exploration.
Regardless, each one of these empires was able to become the most powerful civilization in the world by spreading their influence throughout the entire human population.
But now we are entering a new age of empires…that the world has never seen before.
An era of unbound potential and possibilities where we might be seeing a new kind of empire being built… in a brand new economic, technological, and political frontier.
What would you do if your population was rapidly growing and you were running out of land for people to live on?
What would you do if wanted your country to become wealthy beyond its wildest dreams?
And lastly, what would you do if you wanted your country to be known as the most innovative and culturally superior people of your time?
Well these are the questions that European nations in the 15th Century were asking themselves.
And there was one single answer to all of these questions. And that, was the age of discovery.
In the early 15th century, The portugese began sending ships along the african coast and into the atlantic for 3 reasons. The first was to take control of the african coast for militaristic purposes. The second was to find better trade routes and resources, and the third was to spread christianity.
They ended up Discovering the Atlantic islands of Madeira and the Azores in 1420, and 1427 respectively. They discovered that Wheat and Sugarcane were easy to grow on these islands, and these islands ended up making portugal significantly wealthier, while helping feed its citizens.
Despite discovering these islands in the middle of the atlantic, the portugese, and all european nations had no idea what existed past Cape Bojador, which is northwestern Africa. In fact, there was a fear that anything past Cape Bojador was the end of the world and wouldn’t allow for any explorers to return. So exploration past northwest Africa Did not occur until 1434 around the time of the invention of the new ship technology, called the Caravel.
This led to a dramatic increase in exploration where the Portugese found and settled in many parts of Africa such as Ghana, the Gulf of Guinea, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, and Mombasa…while also settling in part of india, southern asiai, and Brazil.
The addition of these lands to the portugese empire ended up giving portgual a dramatic increase in trade and resources, which made the country go through an economic boom.
During this time, other european nations began to notice the success of the portugese empire. So the other european nations began exploring as well, in hopes of increasing their wealth, and military power, while spreading their culture.
The Spanish settled in the Canary islands in 1436, then conquered the Caribbean in 1502, Panama in 1513, Mexico in 1519, Peru in 1531, Most other south american coutnries by 1582, And Florida and Texas by 1622. This led to an economic boom for the spanish where they gain access to many valuable resources such as gold and spices.
The british in the 17th Century captured Jamaica, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbados, Maryland, Rhode Island, Conneticut, Caronlina, and New York were all settled by the british between 1624 and 1663. And eventually by 1913 The British empire would expand to Canada, Australia, India, East and South Africa, Parts of east Asia, New Zealand, Several South American Countries, and much more. The British Empire had 23% of the worlds population under its ruling, while having control of over 25% of the land on earth,
This rapid colonization of the world led to the saying “The Empire on which the sun never sets” meaning that the empire was so big that the sun was always shining on atleast one of its territories at all times.
And this led to an unprecedented power imbalance in the world where 25% of the worlds GDP in 1870 came from the British, meanwhile other empires such as the United States only had 9% of the worlds GDP.
Too long for youtube, end of transcript.

Hey Everyone! This was the last video I wrote up while still recovering from my heart problems. In the last few days, things have seemingly gotten back to relatively normal, so expect a higher frequency of videos soon. But anyways, what do you all think of the space economy and the parallels to early explorers? Let me know in the comments down below!

in a thousand years maybe. The initial colonisation will be pure expense. Once the first 10 thousand people have colonised the Moon, Lunacity can start to become self sufficient, and once the industries have been properly developed there, then and only then can we start to look at Mars and the Asteroid belt.

This is what I have been trying to tell my university professors since the start of this COVID situation. "Everybody, get a webcam and microphone, we're going to switch to online lectures. I'm going to ask questions nobody wants to answer, not make eye contact with the camera myself, and get annoyed when none of my students are engaged or replying." Yeah... maybe, just maybe, treat it like KZbin content creators do. They know what they're doing, they're (usually) passionate about it, and they're incentivized to actually capture attention and deliver (some algorithmically identifiable approximation of) value; which, y'know, is still a lot better than the crappy way traditional education is conducted.

How about the fact there are secret space programs dating back from 1937? That there are at this moment, 'people' on the south pole, that posses technical knowledge ahead of ours, about a thousand years. What about the secret treaties with several alien species, going on from at least 1947 in USA? Where the governments don't want us to know about, still, despite the fact they made agreements with the galactic federation since 1996 to open up about this fact, as well as the vast fleet of space ships that are in our solar system at this moment, to monitor our progress saving the planet from an evil alien race that is secretely ruling the planet for at least 12000 years? How about the fact that the moon as well as mars, are already colonized by several alien races, as also ours? How about the moon is a former battleplanet, built from titanium, populated also by sveral alien races, that has been placed here after a serious clash with a larger battleplanet in a space war, when the 11th planet: Maldek was destroyed, leaving only meteorites and stardust? All i want to say is that if we want to 'realy' live, we need to know what is 'realy' going on. How about the fact there are secret space programs dating back from 1937? It would be interesting to consider WHY the Europeans were asking those three questions in the first place. The drive to explore stems in large part from Europe being a fractured entity with small warring tribe like factions compared to the Huge and mature land Empires of Asia. It was an initial 'backwardness' and fierce competition internally between relatively small kingdoms that pushed explorers abroad in order to strengthen their position at home. This rivalry continued with competition over foreign lands, culminating in the carving up of Africa between European Powers in 1884. So these otherwise underdeveloped states out of necessity grew to become powerful Empires, before returning to their old internal tribal ways with the start of World War 1.

If Columbus thought the world was alot smaller than it was, hence thinking he made it to India after which tribes in America were called Indians from then on. The contemporaries of his day were right on the size of the world and dangers of ship travel, they just didn't know there were the Americas smack dab in the middle of them and India.

Whilst braving the oceans in the 15th century seemed as dangerous as outer space, and just as expensive traverse, on the other side were vast inhabitable lands and populations to be colonized. Not so beyond our planet. We would have to find highly valued minerals to be worth maintaining a base and transshipping life-support materiel and loot. Unless mining could be done via robots, remote control and levitation craft. (Opinion limited by 20th century perspective.)

Not really, no. This is stated quite frequently but Constantinople was a shell of its former self since 1204, and even after the Palaiologan Restoration it never recovered its former glory as a financial hub that was the Terminus of the Silk Road and most trade networks of the Middle Ages. In reality, the biggest motivating factor for the strongest European naval powers of the time to fund expeditions outside traditional routes was the spice trade. By 1453, the spice trade in the Mediterranean had been monopolized by Venetian merchants trading with the Mamluk Sultanate, which had a (state) monopoly on the spice trade coming in through Red Sea commerce.

I like the premise for the video, however a couple of points if I may. For example War was left out as a way to take land already occupied. That happened a lot in history, when the British took control of India for example. It wasn't just a chunk of land with no civilized culture. So today China could possibly do something similar ? Also colonizing Mars will take a huge amount of time and resources. If someone tried to make that claim they owned it outright and the supply chain on earth was disrupted there is no way they could continue. To do so they would already need a significant civilization there already, and by that time others would be there also.

India had help from Indians in governing India since they were so divided. Although today no country owns another country in theory, in practice lots of countries being dominated by forces from other countries. Lots of countries have had their leaders replaced militias trained and supported by the CIA, and these CIA backed leaders often placed the countries in debt or bought lots of things from the West b/c their power depended on appeasing the WorldBank/IMF/Western leaders rather than their own citizens. Also read about debt diplomacy especially Noam Chomsky and the confessions of an economic hitman guy on youtube.

There are serious problems for people living in space or low gravity environments but maybe robots could do the work. There was also an experiment with people living in a closed environment (dome) for a few months or years on earth and it had lots of problems. Mars is a deadly environment, does not look very attractive to me, but maybe just for resource extraction if the economics can be made to work.

I think the 1964 space treaty only applies to states not private companies. And even then, as you stated here, the space treaty has no teeth to enforce it so it will inevitably be broken by everyone simultaneously. There’s nothing to stop a company as soon as it gets big enough to claim entire planets and enforce it with security forces. And if you think wealth disparity is bad NOW…

Good video, but the two big problems with exploiting the solar system are gravity, and gravity. For people to survive anywhere, it looks like we need a decent gravity level (as well as shielding and a stable biosphere etc.). Mars is probably the smallest body that we could build long term permanent bases on, but even that is suboptimal. Secondly, it's REALLY difficult/expensive with current technology to get out of gravity wells like those of planets or even the moon to then return products to Earth. So, if we want to manufacture goods or mine resources, the obvious target is actually the asteroid belt, coupled with artificial habitats/factories in earth orbit. The latter are extremely vulnerable to flares, meteorites, and sabotage though. So until we have more advanced propulsion systems, artificial gravity and cheap super-strong construction materials, the most likely exploration and exploitation/industrialization of the solar system is going to be via robots. Don't expect to be able to visit a Mars base anytime soon, unless as a drone video flyby of the wreckage of some over-optimistic colony of idealistic volunteers, who all died within a few years.

okay so you actually have no idea what you're talking about. you have no idea how difficult it is to reach Mars, to produce energy to send it back to earth and how unfeasible all this is. you're just emulating hypothesis for 5 minutes at the end about how it may be possible in the near future after a 15 minutes exposition about how viking couldn't but then we could. what a waste of time
@Lamalas
@Lamalas 3 жыл бұрын
Practically speaking, even if space travel was completly free, mars is WAY harder to survive on then the sahara desert for example. High speed planes are so expensive, require so much maintenance and use so much fuel, they will never become mainstraim. Also, vikings didn't have horns on their helmets.

I'm looking forward to the first solar system-scale esport competition. I mean, the people on mars might be super duper strong at a given video game, and so it's only normal for people to want to compare their skills with each other in a tournament. The thing is, 20 minutes of delay is definitely not an option for competitive play. I mean, give me 100 ms of delay and I can get pretty frustrated! And so we might need to send actual gamers into orbit of the other planet, and maybe like switch who, be it earth or mars gamers, is going to go to the other planet every year to be more equal on luanch costs. And then gamers are going to make excuses about how micro gravity affects gameplay, and how the match was not fair because of that. And then when they'll win the tournament while being the one competing in orbit of the planet, they'll flex on the other players for getting beaten from space. God I have joytears from this envisionned future... Hope I'm not just making stuff up and that this future really happens
