While the Joker comes back in the movie it’s not the same Joker. The Joker that dies in this continuity is the one we’ve been watching since the 90’s series. He’s not resurrected, but planned more than just brainwashing Robin. Something that wouldn’t manifest for several years in the case things didn’t initially work out.

Yeah the twist is that the Joker who returns is actually (spoiler alert for Return of the Joker) Robin (Tim Drake) the boy who Joker tortures and turns into a little version of himself in this flashback. Joker dies, but the mental scars he left on Tim remain, and years later drives Tim to become his successor. Well, sort of, there's also a computer chip Joker programmed to transfer his personality into Tim, which is kind of dumb, but whatever. Its a cool concept.

Joker is such a great villain. Mark Hamil voice acting him is iconic From what I have seen, I would agree it is the best Joker death by a long shot and the story for this scene specifically is much better than the rest of the movie. Joker is by far I think the favorite batman villain and is well-known for the mirror opposite to such a dark and serious protagonist. He is the most complex and most entertaining to watch. Suicide squad did him dirty, and although the Joker Movie was excellent, I don't think I see him as the supervillain that we see fighting batman.

This is why in my opinion, the DC Animated Universe will ALWAYS triumph over any of the cinematic movies and even the comics; the stories were just so enjoyable and developed, it's why we hold Batman TAS, Superman, Static Shock and Justice League in such high regard; they were the pinnacle of superhero animation back in the late 90s and into the 2000s. The stuff nowadays just doesn't hold a candle; the DCAU was peak.

In the original comic book, Batman was supposed to kill the Joker. However, there was something about the chemistry between the two that caught reader's attention and the writers found a way to explain that the Joker survived. The Joker isn't the most powerful nor the scariest of the enemies Batman has had to face. However the Joker is the most iconic as he is a foil to Batman. Batman is serious, logical and driven. Joker is irreverent, chaotic and willing to change his motives and goals when it suits him. Batman's initial character has a gun, but the comic writers decided to scrap that and instead showed that Batman didn't need deadly force or weaponry to stop the villains. In effect he became a non-lethal badass. Oh sure, he won't kill you, but can you imagine what you can live through? Also there have been many Robins. First was Richard Grayson who created the persona himself to honor is murdered trapeze artist family. Once he became an adult and saw how Batman was a bit to aggressive, he left and joined the Teen Titans and eventually became the superhero Nightwing. The next Robin was Jason Todd, who was a street urchin Batman adopted when he found the little brat stealing the tires off the Batmobile. Jason Todd was a bit feral and Batman felt he needed to harness the kid's talents for good because the kid had a darkside in him. Eventually Joker murders Jason by beating him almost to death with a crowbar then using explosives. Batman finds Jason's lifeless body and was transporting him home for burial when the body was stolen by Ras Al Ghul (a hundreds year old ecoterrorist who is an enemy of Batman, but who wants Batman to marry his daughter, Talia, because he thinks Batman is the only man worthy to take over his organization). Jason's body was reanimated via the Lazurus Pit (a very toxic substance found in subterranean caves that can rejuvenate a person but in the process slowly drives the user mad) and Jason escapes before Al Ghul could stop him. Jason Todd eventually comes back to Gotham as the Red Hood and starts killing off all the criminal masterminds in the city. In the end, he abducts Joker and confronts Batman enraged about how Joker was not killed to avenge his death. Tim Drake is the third Robin who was taken under Batman's protection when his father's body was found floating in Gotham harbor. Turns out Tim's father worked for Two-Face (a villain who has schizophrenia as well as a split personality and a face that is burned on one side) and it seems Two-Face had him killed because the guy stole something important to the villain. The boy was being targetted because he may actually know where that something is. Tim found the old Robin suit and put it on to fight against Two-Face to avenge his own father's death. Batman decides to train him as the new Robin. Nightwing comes back into the fold at this time. Damien Wayne is the Fourth Robin. Yeah, he's Batman's son, but not by Batman's wish. Talia, Rhas Al Ghul's daughter drugged him and then raped him and then didn't let him know she was pregnant with his child. This is because Al Ghul needed an heir and if Batman wouldn't accept the offer, then he'd get the next best thing. An offspring with Bruce's genetic traits that is trained up as a killing machine. By the time Talia introduced the boy to his father, Damien was already a little psychopath with a huge chip on his shoulder. Took quite a bit for the whole bat family to get the kid to be less of an elitist shit. Eventually, Batman had to send him to the Teen Titans as well in order for the kid to learn to "play well with others". In a future alternate reality, when Batman is older and meaner and the world is in a dystopia, Stephanie Brown becomes the Fifth Robin. She's not really cannon, but then the whole DC/Marvel universes are doing these muli-verse thingies so anything goes. Technically, the Stephanie Brown Robin doesn't exist in the timeline where Tim Drake's Robin kills Joker as the future is Batman Beyond. I suggest you watch Batmetal 1-3. Those are HILARIOUS!

Batman has several iconic enemies. Like Bane who not only figured out his identity but also broke his spine. Or Red Hood who is his former Robian and an on and off villain/vigilante. But the Joker is the complete antithesis of Batman. Batman's cool, calm, and focused. Joker is about as unstable and unpredictable as you can get without going full-on Deadpool and just breaking continuity and the 4th wall.

Personally I love this film. Easily in my top 25. Batman Beyond has always been one of my favorites. My absolute favorite part of the movie, aside from this portion, is the final battle between Terry and Joker. Bruce tells Terry not to engage in the Joker's playful teasing, but Terry decides to do the one thing Bruce never did, get in on the joke. Terry makes fun of the Joker. Terry tells him he isn't funny, that he's pathetic, and that he never amounted to anything. Terry starts to laugh and Joker freaks out saying he needs to stop. Leading to my favorite lines in the movie. Joker: "Stop it! Stop laughing!!" Terry:"Why? I thought the Joker always wanted to make Batman Laugh" Joker:"YOU'RE NOT BATMAN!!!!"

Batman has a fairly large cast of villains, nicknamed the Rogues Gallery, but Joker is pretty much the most prolific and known. There's a quote floating around that I can't remember what it's from, but it boils down to all villains in the DCAU being kind of terrified of the Joker. Which is kind of funny because the Joker has no powers at all, he's just a guy. He's clever and cruel and completely insane, but he's just a guy.

Another brilliant scene in this video. Near the end, you see the joker pop a knife out of his sleeve and stab Batman in the leg. He was talking about Batman, and that leads to him saying, "I, on the other hand...". However, as he's saying that, he's using misdirection, to have Batman look at one hand while he pops the knife out of the other. The hidden joke there is that you could also interpret the Joker as saying "Eye on the other hand...", a veiled warning about the knife.

Batman and the Joker are foils to each other, yin and yang as one song puts it. Batman is dark, methodical, serious, and helps where he can. The Joker is bright, chaotic, maniacal, and murders when he feels like it. When it comes BtAS, Batman went up against a lot of foes. Some from the comics, some made wholesale for the show (some of which made it into the comics, like Harley and the Condiment King). But The Joker was the first one we see him against in that series, and, through this movie, kne of the last, as well. Also, Mark Hamill, voice of The Joker (as well as Fire Lord Ozai and actor for Luke Skywalker, among many others), has stated that he will never voice The Joker again, now that Kevin Conroy has passed. Because who is The Joker without his Batman*? * Note that Batman does not feel the same way. He would really rather not have to deal with The Joker anymore.

While Joker is currently the most iconic out of Batman's rogues gallery, he isn't the strongest, smartest or best. He suffers from overexposure by being so different compared to other villains in iconic comic IPs. Very marketable and once upon a time my favorite villain, but having seen when Mr. Freeze, Penguin, Al Ghul, etc get written well he took a hit in my liking of him. Mr. Freeze for example has changed for over a decade despite being around for a LONG time prior to the cartoon series referenced there. This is among my favorite batman movies and by far my favorite use of Terry(the protege in that movie) by showing him going up against the Joker in his way. Throwing off the joker and showing how well he thrived off of Bruce but struggles against Terry.

Joker is kind of one of the big batman villains despite other batman villains having their own impact. Hell Bane is literally the guy that physically and mentally outsmarted and broke the bat. The Joker just constantly gets brought back no matter how many times he dies, whether its fake outs or DC resetting continuity again for another universal retelling of the stories because they realize they can't continue capitalizing on one of their biggest players if they just kill them off. If you want a really good video summary about how death in American comics has no point anymore with how hard both Marvel and DC will backpeddal just to ensure they keep the cash cow above water, I recommend watching Max Landis's The Death of Superman video essay.

1.I'd highly reccommend checking out Batman Beyond. Terry Mcguiness is quite literally one of the few characters in all of DC that, in my opinion, could actually replace Bruce as The Batman. Over the course of the show and in the movie, he more than earns it and his developement is handled really well. 2. What makes the story of how the Joker died so much more impactfull is that , throughout Batman Beyond Terry encounters or hears about the fates of many of Batman's rogue's gallery. But *never* The Joker. Bruce even seemingly avoids talking about him and only alludes to the fact that he's dead and that he had something to do with it. Made even more strange when the Joker Gang is a thing in Gotham, a gang that outright glorifies the Joker and tries to continue his legacy. So Bruce having nothing to say about it was *really weird* So when we finally see how the clown prince of crime finally kicked the bucket, it hit that much harder. 3. There is actually a scrapped scene from the movie that showed Bruce going back to Arkham Asylum , where they buried Joker. Only to find his corpse strung up by chains, taunting Bruce; knowing he would go there.

Actually, I want to correct something Critic got wrong. In most of the Comic versions of the Batman Universe, the Joker DOES know exactly where the Batcave is, and who Batman is. But he never uses that against him. Because his goal isn't to kill or destroy the batman. Not physically anyways. To the Joker, Batman is a Puzzle, a Game. To see what he can do, to get under his skin, to push him to his limits, and finally break his 1 rule, and kill him. This is why in most versions, he always asks Batman to kill him, to do it, to break his 1 rule. My favorite example of this is from the animated movie "Batman: Under the Red Hood" Where what we see here in this video is taken to a much more extreme end. Batman confronts the Joker in Arkem, literally choking the life out of him, while Joker asks him with his gasping breathing, "You going to do it this time? Or just put me in a bodybag for 6 months?" The Hero with Batman actually standing up, concerned he might actually kill him. But of course, he doesn't. But it's just a wonderful scene, in a wonderful movie. Would LOVE to see you reacting to it.

Harley Quinn just fell in love with the Joker, something that was out right stated he did intentionally in the show and he did it as a joke. Being she's in love with a guy that cares nothing for her and he changed a therapist into a crazy person through "love" alone. The Batman Animated Series show was her first appearance in media by the way. Batman Beyond takes play way in the future so all the characters are too old and too jaded with Bruce to take up the mantle. So the person who takes up the mantle is a new character, Terry McGinnis who Bruce entrust with the suit and mentors him into becoming the next Batman. Mainly because they have similar trauma and Terry has the same sense of justice. Also, really hurts you don't know Joker is Batman's main villain. Sending you me medical bills for that cringe.

Yeah the reason Superman killed Joker in Injustice? It's a whole thing involving a pregnant Lois Lane, a nuclear bomb, and an entire city destroyed. It basically broke Superman to the point he went full on "Justice Lord" and decided the only way to stop villains like Joker was death since he knew Batman would never kill Joker no matter what he did. From there he went on to take over the world basically and became a dictator of sorts when it came to how crime was dealt with, some heroes joined him, some villains joined him too...a "Better to be the right hand of the devil than be in his path" kinda deal. Other heroes and villains joined Batman and his resistance against Superman because of him taking things too far...he would up killing Shazam...who I must remind you, is a little boy with magic powers that turns him into a grown man. When Shazam decided to stop following Superman...Superman used his heat vision to kill him. It's even referenced in Injustice 2 where Superman has an intro dialog against Blue Beetle where he says he won't hurt children...Blue Beetle replies "It didn't stop you with Shazam"...yeah Injustice Superman went down a dark road thanks to what Joker did.

also the joker doesnt care who batman is, why joker kept referring to batman and 'batman' even after he said he knows who he is.. cause they kinda went into it in the series, (only of the deeper episodes/not sure which one thou) but cant have a joker without batman and vie versa, they are the two sides of the same coin) was another episode where batman seemingly was gone for good and joker just fell into a depression, saying whats the point to anything anymore with out the bat to stop him.

This death is among the best i personally like the batman who laughed story more, barman after the joker who learned batmans identity and kills the parents of evrey kid in Gotham city and turns the kids into joker esk abominations. Batman kills the joker infecting him self with a joker surum that drives batman mad creating the batman who laughs

If you want a good (if long) breakdown of a good Batman/Joker story then ThePandaRedd has a video on the Arkham Asylum comic. Other big Joker stories that get referenced all the time are A Death in the Family, The Killing Joke, and more recently and much more controversial, The Three Jokers. (personally I think he's an overrated villain.)

You have the Arkham games, definitely play them! Easily one of the more interesting takes on Batman as well as 3 of the 4 games (Asylum, City, and Knight) using the same voice actors for Batman and Joker as the animated series this movie is connected to. The 4th game, Origins, features a different cast to play younger versions of the characters, but the other three are all the same when it comes to Bats and Joker's most iconic voices. And yes, when Doug says people consider these two to be the definitive Batman and Joker, he doesn't mean just in animation. They are THE BEST Batman and Joker, period. The live action ones always have to have the caveat of "live action Batman or Joker" because these two are absolutely iconic. Kevin Conroy (RIP) and Mark Hamill kill it as Batman and Joker every time. For some of the other questions. The new Batman mentioned in this is Terry McGuinness. He's not a Robin like the others but was created for the show he appeared in, Batman Beyond. The idea is it's decades in the future and Bruce Wayne has grown too old to continue life as Batman and thus retired. Terry loses his father in a villainous attack and by chance comes across Bruce Wayne, getting a job being his caretaker to help Terry grow more mature as he's something of a punk high school student. Terry stumbles across the old Batcave and discovers that Bruce Wayne *was* Batman and realizes his chance to get vengeance for his father just landed in his hands. Terry steals the last of the line of Batsuits which has a lot of high tech gadgets built in (it's closer to an Iron Man suit in a way) and runs off before Bruce realizes what happened. The two strike a deal, Terry can keep the suit and act as the new Batman for Gotham, while Bruce mentors him both as a superhero and to be a better person than the dark path he was taking would have led him to be. Joker 100% is the TOP Batman villain. There are others. Penguin, Two-Face, Killer Croc, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, etc. But Joker is the top dog when it comes to the Batman Rogues Gallery. The relationship between Batman and most other villains is that of superhero vs supervillain, rarely getting more personal than that. Villain has evil plan, hero stops them, simple. But Joker is different. He doesn't want to kill Batman, he wants to *break* him, corrupt him. It is all one big game for Joker. Batman has his one rule, no killing. Joker wants Batman to cross that line, even if it means killing Joker himself. He doesn't care, he'd happily die at Batman's hands knowing that it was Batman who killed him, thus breaking his rule and giving in to being nothing but a killer in the end. He'd die knowing he'd won and that Batman would realize he lost. Nothing is ever straightforward with Joker. If the Penguin holds the city hostage for money, he just wants the money. If Joker does it, he has some ulterior motive at work behind the scenes so that even if the big plan is foiled, something else succeeds in the background. That's what makes him so dangerous. Joker is ultimately a pushover in hand to hand combat. He's got his knives and joke weapons and such, but Batman can take him down no problem. The problem is Joker always plans for that. Bombs hidden in the city, a kidnapped loved one held in a death trap, the citizens about to be poisoned, whatever. Joker plots are never black and white like most other villains are. He's always playing three steps ahead and knows precisely how to play against Batman.

13:40 Good question: I personally think the best villain for a hero is the protagonist's antithesis, the villain that is in all ways the exact mirror of the protagonist (example, I love the Dalton Brothers as Lucky Luke's antagonists as much as the next guy, but I feel the oneshot villains Elliot Belt the bounty hunter and the killer Phil Defer have actually more potential than them). But Batman has more than one: Ras' al Ghoul is his antithesis in mentality and goals, Joker is the antithesis in appareances and factions, Owlman is LITTERALLY himself from a parallel universe in which good is bad and vice versa... you have a lot of "number 1". I feel that Joker is good, but it's like the Dalton Brothers for Lucky Luke: they are the most famous/funny/fan favourite, but not necessarely the [exact] best one for that postition.

13:52 "Is Joker the number 1 enemy?" Yes, he is. Sure, Batman fights The Penguin and many others but Joker is the perfect arch-nemesis of Batman. The two are complete opposites of each other; Batman, the humorless, brooding Dark Knight of Gotham and Joker, the laughter obsessed, colorful Clown Prince of Crime. No matter the universe, they will always fight nor will the battle ever end, one cannot nor will not kill the other, why? Batman has his moral code, you may think The Joker would but if he did then the Joker's twisted games would end without the Dark Knight to play with.

Terry Mcginnis became the next Batman decades after the orginal Batman or any of his sidekicks retired. He was never a Robin. The Robin from Teen Titans is based on Dick Grayson, the 1st Robin. He wanted to step out of Batman's shadow and became Nightwing. Tim Drake, the kid in the video is one of the later Robins that took the mantle.

I believe the Joker is generally considered to be Batman's main nemesis, though I'm not sure how much that's actually true in the comics, he's definitely a fan favorite at least The Lego Batman movie actually even touched on whether or not the relationship between Batman and the Joker is special and made it a major point of conflict (I genuinely recommend that movie, it's great and a lot of fun) If you want a review of it to react to, I don't think Nostalgia Critic did one (yet?), but there is the one called "What makes Lego Batman the most faithful Batman" by Nerdstalgic

It depends on how you define it. Batman's ultimate "True Enemy" to his goals of saving Gothem, is the Court of Owls. But the person that is his complete opposite, and works as a psycologal foil against his morals, ideals, and beliefs. Then it is the Joker. If you mean actually fighting physically 1 on 1, it is Bane. If your talking about who has worked against him the most, it's probably Raz Al Gul, who has a love/hate relationship with Batman/Bruce. But by far, his most well known and well loved Villain, has to be The Joker, 100%, thanks to the movies and cartoons. He just has too many Iconic lines, scenes, and roles.

It seems interesting to say that I remember watching both versions of the movie when it aired for adult audiences to child-friendly audiences. As the Uncut version was shown during Toonmai nights in Cartoon Network showing action pack with heavy violence when it comes to Adult Swim airing till years later on Discovery Kids/HUB was showing the movie to show a lighter side of the story with keeping the same atmosphere but showing cuts of a light side and have replaces parts. So the movie still live on strong on whoever watches it and the VA of Terry aka new Batman still do voicing but it’s rare moments to catch him. So yeah, I hope you can give it a watch of Batman Animated series as they have a interesting storyline to follow. 😌

2:17 Oh that's absolutely PRECIOUS, Kyle! You think comics know when to stop their stories! Bitch you're a Dragon Ball fan. You should _know_ how cheap death in fiction is. 6:42 "This is... crazy!" IT'S THE JOKER! THE CLOWN PRINCE OF CRIME! None of that dumbass "society" melodrama started by The Dark Knight and propagated by the Joaquin Phoenix movie, this is the JOKER. Crazy is his entire MO. 7:12 Nah, Harley was just emotionally manipulated by "puddin" over there. She wasn't even thrown into a vat of acid like he was, that was a retcon they added when they introduced her to the comics. 11:12 Doug *SERIOUSLY* underplays how good the final confrontation between Terry and the Joker is. And yeah, this scene plays a major part in it. This isn't just an excuse to have these two fight despite the latter being dead, this is the moment Terry McGinnis _finally and truly_ steps out of Bruce's shadow and BECOMES Batman. Terry's putting up a decent fight, but Joker's experience combined with Tim Drake's more athletic body has him on the backfoot. So naturally, he asks his mentor for help. Bruce tells his student to fight his old nemesis the way he always has: ignoring the Joker's quips and jokes and just powering on through. But then Terry has an epiphany: "Wait, I like to talk too..." And so he does the one thing nobody in the DC Animated Universe has ever done: _Heckle the Joker._ Right down to mocking his supervillain origin in a complete role reversal of the scene in Arkham we saw earlier. And this drives Joker nuts. We've NEVER seen him this homicidally angry. When Joker rips off Terry's mask and begins to choke him to death, Terry pulls out the winning move: Using one of Joker's discarded electric joybuzzers to short out the microchip on his neck, freeing the former Robin from his control and ending his threat for good. If you have 5 minutes of spare time, PLEASE, for the love of god, look up the final confrontation. Will Friedle and Mark Hamill give it their absolute 110%. 14:01 Oh yeah, Batman has a HUGE Rogues' Gallery. But Joker is always the top billing because he's such a good foil to our beloved Caped Crusader.

This is a great film. It has its problems and I won’t deny this part is without question my favorite sequence. I enjoyed Batman Beyond. (Nowadays I’m not entirely sure if Batman Beyond would beat Spider-Man 2099 for certain reasons) Mark Hamill as Joker is truly one of the greats in voice acting. I still can’t believe he’s Luke Skywalker too. I never knew that growing up and was BLOWN AWAY. Throw Fire Lord Ozai onto the stack and it just gets better. Don’t get me wrong I love Kevin Conroy but Mark Hamill has much deeper meaning to me.

Of the Joker deaths I've witnessed over various media, Return of the Joker is one of the better ones. When it was first released the only available/TV version was the one where Joker got electrocuted offscreen-the gag gun double-shot was from a later unrated edition. My favorite was from one of the comics, where he dies by the hand of the resurrected Jason Todd; whom was the Robin that readers voted to have Joker kill in the comics in the mid-1980s. Blindness has its own spectrum of sorts. My father was born blind, but has had multiple surgeries that removed many of the cataracts that prevented his sight. But he's never neem fully sighted, and later in life has developed floaters that obscure his limited vision a bit. Meanwhile me stepmother I believe has always been fully blind. She was able to see bright lights if held against her eye, but alas lost even that bit of visual stimulation.
