What if getting feedback wasn't a source of fear, but joy? In this personal talk, speaker/author Joe Hirsch makes a passionate case for sharing "feedforward," a new view of human potential. When feedback draws others closer to their future selves, they experience the joy of self-discovery that leads to positive and lasting change. Joe Hirsch specializes in helping schools and businesses master the art and science of high-performance feedback. An award-winning educator and instructional leader, Joe has spent more than a decade in the K-12 and higher-ed markets training, coaching and empowering teachers and school administrators for success. Based on his 2017 book, The Feedback Fix, Joe has shown clients like the Gates Foundation and members of the U.S. armed forces how to boost creativity, foster collaboration and deepen self-awareness. His work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Inc., Educational Leadership, and other major outlets. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I think this is also a great talk. Feedback is something that is apart of life. The mirror holding method is something that allows you to look at yourself at the same time your giving feedback to someone else.

I personally can admit that I was not always comfortable receiving feedback in any area. But he did talk about a great point that feedback can be switched to something positive and good rather than bad. As I grew older I had to open up and allow people to give me feedback. Weather it was at work, at home, or in school with my assignments. It has definitely changed my way of thinking when it comes to receiving feedback. To me it means having an opportunity to hear how you can be better and improve. It does not always necessarily mean you are wrong but rather opening up to a space of improvement.

your story speaks to me and I like the realness of how the wisdom grew in age as in my early school carrier I hated seeing the corrections teachers showed on quizzes and and comments in general but know I welcome all forms of feedback.

I really like this point of view. I have learned through practice that you need to get people to see things for themselves and questions are always the answer to that. I like the Mirror Holder idea you present to help this stick!

I enjoyed a session about feedback with Joe Hirsch recently at the Learning Forward Conference in Grapevine, Texas. Take away: As a giver of feedback, I need to hold up a mirror and ask, "Who do you want to be?" Help them to feedforward. Make my voice smaller so that their voice can grow. Thanks for the insights. ~~MB

I myself like to look at feedback as a learning experience, to maybe do things in a better way that i may not know or maybe a better way of doing things. I've always like to learn new things and always will.
