Resupply binds, also known as b4nny binds, are an easy to overlook part of competitive Team Fortress 2 simply because of how ubiquitous they are. This handy keybind wasn't always such a staple, but now is a mainstay in competitive play. Let's take a look at what these binds do and why they're so useful.

Maybe using kill rather than explode leaves the (extremely slim) chance that you are a dead ringer spy? Because the fake ragdoll from dead ringer can’t gib iirc

The b4nny binds are also mentioned in Uncle Dane's video on Battle Engineer, where it allows the Engineer to quickly and seamlessly switch loadouts and adapt to the current gamestate. You can set up your teleporters to the Eureka Effect, and you can swap to any available loadout at any time with the binds when combined with the ability to teleport to spawn, say a Battle Engie loadout with the Gunslinger or Jag, depending on the situation.

I remade spy's bind for switching between knife and revolver to switch between shotgun and short circuit +attack2 for instant big glowing ball launch.

I think the problem with banning it is that the bind just makes it easier. If the command was banned, players would learn to quickly switch loadouts with m. If respawn on loadout change was banned, players would switch class instead (which can also be bound)

As someone who played competitive for a long time ago, i think the window to ban this keybind is long gone. I really agree how problematic it is, but most players are so used to playing with it, that it will cause uproar if RGL or ETF2L bans it. The selling point of 6s is that its consistently played the same way for over a decade, so a significant change like this would reasonably not please a lot of people.

I don't think it's really even problematic, its a QoL thing mostly. Obviously you're at a large disadvantage if you don't use it, but it's very simple to set up and even bottom-of-the-barrel players know how to use it. And if you get forward spawn and its unfightable, do you just walk out and die and eat another respawn timer? Lmfao. In terms of actual gameplay impact, its no different to how Overwatch has spawn switching and invulnerability in the spawn area. In this case its actually worse in TF2 since you can still be killed running back into spawn before you press your resup bind instead of instantly being safe.

I am so amazed you did not mention the engineer in this video at all!! So much is unlocked by simply having multiple different wrenches and loadouts hand; rescue ranger, minis, the jag for quick set up, etc etc all available for you at the press of a button! Moreso a casual/highlander thing but yea

This is (a) bound by default and (b) available through the keybinds menu, not explicitly through the console. It's something that as a casual player, before I watched any TF2 videos, that I already had bound but just didn't understand its use. So err, no, it shouldn't be banned as if it's a powerful console command, it should be considered as a builtin game mechanic intended for all players. Because it's exposed in the UI as such.

On casual there are a few more applications. Avoiding death is already mentioned, but it's specially useful if you're going to die of afterburn (or bleeding). As someone else said, Uncle Dane explains in a video how great those are for Engineer setups. A very situational one is Sniper mindgames. If another Sniper is watching your door and you're "trapped" in that side, you can teleport to another side and trick him. This is fun to do in 2fort against campers. Changing your spawn point also comes in handy on some maps like in Badwater's red spawn(s). That lower spawn is terrible, but you can spam the bind and hope you respawn on the other one. Another thing is that in some maps the spawns are really big but there's only one or two cabinets and it's slower to walk to them. Then there are some maps with spawns that are smaller than it seems. An example is in Hoodoo's 3rd stage. If you try to switch classes near the doors you will die (if you have that one advance option enabled) because the real functional spawn is just a little room. To avoid that you can try your bind and if your loadout doesn't change it means you're not on the spawn. Although item servers make this unreliable.

I believe it has been banned in the past, but under certain circumstances. mainly backspawning to preserve stickies, uber or sentrygun.

While I wasn't able to find it again, I remember seeing a video arguing for adding "mezzanines" (I'm pretty sure that's the wrong word but it's what they used so w/e) to last point spawns on 5CP maps, to solve this and other related issues. By "mezzanine," they meant an area which only the spawning team could enter, but which doesn't count as a spawn room - like the decorative rooms on Granary, or the hallways on Hightower. This would still allow the defending team to play around their spawn doors, but wouldn't let them resupply right away, since they still have to run back to their actual spawn room. It would also nerf other "cheesy" strategies, like wrangling/rescue-rangering a sentry from spawn: If your sentry goes down, what do you do? Do you run back to spawn and switch to Scout? Or do you just enter the fight as an Engineer? I'm not a comp player, so all I can do is parrot what I've heard other players suggest. But this still strikes me as a map design problem rather than a game mechanic problem. (Side note: I think resupply cabinets should reset crit heals. If that makes resupplying too powerful, just move them farther from the spawn doors. 🤷)

Banning resupp is dumb for sixes cuz u can do most of the annoying getaway tech by using a change class bind for something like spy, and either scripting to change class back to your main, or you can just be quick on the draw to switch back

This used to be a thing in MvM on Rottenburg maps; the area where the Tank spawns used to let you b4nny bind back to spawn. Before it was patched, it was especially useful if the engi wasn't using the 2way teleporter upgrade or someone else had just taken it. Let you restock on canteens or get an upgrade or two.

although im not a comp player, this is something that i do regularly. in fact, i almost never actually use the resupply locker. the loadout bind can be super useful if you're on fire too, as sometimes you'll die in spawn. i do use it for moving to forward spawns too, and its especially useful on maps like frontier that have like a billion forward spawns. if you dont have this bind in casual, its probably worth setting it up. also you can do demoknight funnies in spawn room

I would just like to mention how important resupply binds are for Engie both in casual and in Highlander, as you're always needing to switch loadouts as engie to better fit the situation Also note that resupply binds make a very useful bug possible for engie. If you have two loadouts with the exact same items, except one of them has the eureka effect and the other has any other wrench, taking out a Teleporter with the eureka effect loadout then switching to the other loadout using the bind will give you the 100 metal to upgrade Teleporters without using the eureka effect first.

been enjoying your casting over on fireside, on the note of the keybind i use it in pubs due to how convenient it is, plus with how u were saying the instant resupply is amazing. it also helps when being chased through respawn doors by a rusher. i think its to engrained into long playing/comp players to be banned to be honest.

You say, in the first 40 seconds, that it's not a default parameter that is bindable but it's false, in the key mapping options there are a load item preset 0 1 2 3 or 1 2 3 4 that you can bind your keys easily

i can understand the frustrations in 6's but this bind is CRUCIAL in hl, especially on classes like heavy and soldier, but extremely important for engineer as it helps reduce jag effect rollout time amongst other things

calling it a "b4nny bind" is so strange. My pubber ass has been using it for 10 years or so. Just retroactively shoehorning some dude's name onto a basic functionality of the game. Also a ban on this is impossible. You could create a HUD that has a custom page that is just a single massive button that does the same thing. Little more clunky but surely does the job fine. So it would be 1. Press whatever button for that page 2. M1 3. Esc. That's your manual resupply. If you're feeling frisky you could use quickswitch as well, I am pretty sure. The whole discussion always sounds like it's some bitter soldier player coping when their "free medic frag" got away to a bind. Maybe aim better?

the resup locker should just grant crit heals. its a bit of an oversight by valve tbh. now that I think about it, considering valves reasoning for adding crit heals, it could be assumed that spawning with crit heals is a bug

You dont even have to set up hotkeys. By default its F5, 6, 7, 8. Which isnt ideal but even fresh installs have it on.

Oh, it restores crit heals? That... that I did not know. To me that explains why it can become a problem in comp. I keep the Preset binds on the numpad. The get spamed quite a bit on maps like Badwater, and Barnblitz last to try to get to the spawn I want, without having to cross the sightline.

I can’t see this getting banned unless you could be restricted to only changing classes at the resupply cabinet, as swapping off and back to your class would bypass the removal of this bind

Removing/nerfing/banning something because competitive players (0, 00038% of player base) don't like it is dumb at first place. Parachute redeployment nerf was unnecessary for casual players because none of casual players abuse that.

As a not competitive player and new in the game (not to the game), i don't understand how is it so powerful ? It works only in the spawn right ? So it just helps shave off a couple of seconds for every class. Its not even class specific. Escaping on last i don't see how it could be that strong, especially with the heavy example as they would be slow to get back, spawn in a random position and still give up the position they were standing in. Yes it avoid a death and respawn timer, but it doesn't really help defend last. The restoring crit heals thing i don't understand it either. Again its only in spawn so limited use cases. The inconsistency of item servers shouldn't really matter in this conversation in my opinion, because it doesn't change much and don't always help to do it like you said. About the bugs, there should be a penalty in place if used in games but again it shouldn't matter here for banning it or not. For the change of spawn that is situationally better yes to go in the forward spawn, but sometimes its better to stay behind. Back spawn same thing but in reverse at times. Because if the other team continue to move forward, you might spawn behind them if they are distracted or you died just before the spawn changed. All i see is situational benefits, some very situational and honestly i don't see at all how those benefits could be overpowered.

engy is near unplayable on some maps without this bind. with some maps having no closet at all for some reason (process and gullywash forward, despite them having almost no ammo nearby), or its like 2 miles away (swiftwater red spawn which only has a single closet all the way at the very back for the giant room).

Really weird to see all these comments about how its no different than class switch binds, resup binds let you preserve uber which is huge and keep stickies (also maybe banner charge as well but this one barely ever matters). Also the worst part about resup binds is that they're dependent on the item server and the speed can be somewhat inconsistent (or straight up doesnt work when item servers are down)

I feel like it should be enforced through level design rather than competition rules. Considering that there are default binds for it, with the quick resupply coming from an advanced setting anyone can find, it feels pointless to debate on whether a competition should ban them or not. Instead, the discussion really should be pointed towards how maps can be constructed to disallow certain exploits that come from the binds. For example: - some maps can prevent spawn switching by enabling/disabling spawn areas whenever a capture happens - some maps can add areas called "mezzanines". These are areas that extend out from a spawn area to create a place where only the spawning team has access to. These areas are zones of safety, but to properly change loadouts and classes you would need to go further back to access the spawn area and resupply lockers.

for things like this and certain currently allowed items, playing while servers are down or loadout binds don't work give us a good idea of what the game would feel like with those things banned. for example, if im forced to play med with stock syringes, i'm like "holy fuck this is giga-lame". likewise, it always feels kinda lame to play when resupp binds dont work, especially when i die because of it.

I don't think it'd make sense to get rid of the binds without banning resupping via loadout as a whole or you're just going to get wild workarounds. I don't mind it too much aside from one thing, it resets killstreaks :( Maybe a plugin could be made to stop crit heals, or force the delay to match the class swap delay.

TF2C has it's own bind called "respawn" However this one is instant and removes stickies if you have any active

this was an interesting video!!! quick switch binds are def a curious case as to whether they should be allowed or not. i'm definitely on team allow, since i feel trying to enforce a rule against using it would be a nightmare. iirc, there are keybinds in the options menu for switching loadouts, so it's not something the average player couldn't make binds of. i don't think they are different from most binds people use in their config, but please do correct me if i am wrong. even if it wasn't, what constitutes as quickswitching? is any form of quickswitching not allowed (changing class, swapping loadouts, etc.) or only the use of the loadout binds? would using them just for loadout switching be allowed? if its abuse was banned, what counts as abuse? how many times, or how often in a given time, does its usage equate to bind abuse? it just seems like a headache for moderators for something that, while it gives an advantage in certain situations, is more used for convenience and quality of life. i think attempting to ban it would be more difficult than it is worth.

The only problem I see with this is last holds being easier. Fighting near your spawn is huge advantage on defense as you can reload and heal in an instant.

i use this in pub to make the demoknight charge nonstop and make the spawn have an earthquake or make the heavy say "pootis-" over and over didnt know pros use this as an advantage

Could a plugin be made with a custom resupply command that could solve some of the issues like requiring item server, clearing stickies/uber, even backspawning, and just require players to use that instead? Could even add a damage cooldown or something to stop the door camping issue

guys, walking forward needs to be banned. you have to bind it to W manually and it's utterly broken (it lets you walk towards your intended direction and aim at the same time)

Mostly its just quicker, but for medics and soldiers they get to retain their uber and banner charge provided they are still using the same banner/medigun

@@jasonshih3633 i used the wrong wording. what i mean is its kinda difficult to find comp games. ive tried stuff like tf2 center pugs but i can never seem to get any games very fast. where as if i want to hop in a game of melee i can just boot up unranked slippi. i was trying to get into comptf2 this last month and i could not get a single match of 6s setup

i think this whole debate is a tiny bit silly considering you can achieve the same effect by just swapping class and swapping back, next we would just restrict class binds.

It wouldn't be the same because changing classes removes your stickies on demo, your uber on medic and your buildings on engineer.

@@fnutek3720 No, walking is not as fast as the resupply bind. You quite literally teleport and heal to full as soon as you enter spawn.

@@5JSX5 yeah but you get teleported far back in spawn, on many maps thats even slower than walking to the nearby resup cabinet. snakewater and gully in particular spawns you pretty far back compared to the resupply cabinet.

This is soooooo insanely stupid. The problem with this bind isn't that you can insta-resupply in spawn, the problem with this bind is that spawns are WAY too close to objectives. The solution _needs_ to be, say for example for cp_process, keep the spawn doors, but shrink what is the effective spawn size. Spawn shouldn't end at the spawn doors it should end well before the spawn doors. This has been an issue with TF2 maps for YEARS and we're suggesting this bass-ackwards solution, I don't get it.

This is why i don’t like comp players. They get mad they get outplayed and then they say “it removes skill” or “it removes creativity” it don’t matter what game it is. I like when comp literally allows them BECAUSE of the ways they can exploit the game. That’s the coolest part of it all to me and removing things BECAUSE they break the game is the biggest turnoff of competitive.
