This has reminded me of a topic that might make a good video. The Oradour-sur-Glane massacre, where on 10 June, 1944, Waffen SS soldiers murdered nearly 500 residents of a small French town. They shot the men in the legs so they couldn’t run away, and the woman and children were shoved into a church that was then set on fire. The incident was so bad that even Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the Vichy French Government, and other German generals called for the men who partook in it to be arrested. Seems like a good idea for an after hours video.

This horrific incident was also the inspiration for the 1985 Russian film Come and See.

Khatyn' massacre was committed by Ukrainian Nazi collaborators, not Germans. Most got tired in courts and got various sentences, many death sentence, some got shot during apprehension like Ivan Melnichenko, the commander of the Dirlewanger unit. The coat of arms of this unit is being used in modern Ukrainian army. Vasyl Meleshko, the commander of 118th Schutzmannschaft Battalion, Hryhoriy Vasiura the chief of staff of the same battalion, were sentenced to death. Overall, dozens of Ukrainian Nazis taking art in Khatyn' Massacre got tried in 1960s and 1970s, some got death penalty.

Some actually escaped justice and fled to Canada , like Katryuk , with the Canadian government refusing to extradite Katryuk until his death in 2015.

Glad you mentioned the vicious cycle of the allies doing the same horrible thing. We get the narrative of how disgusting the Nazis were all the time but never how the allies (mainly one specific nation cough cough) were raping and pillaging their way the other direction at the same time. WW2 was just fucked up on all sides and it's horrid how it's made out like some glorious good vs evil thing. It was evil on all fronts. It's sad because it's arguably even worse today.

Wow, it was definitely interesting and darkening to hear this story, but I actually expected this video on be on the “Katyn Massacre” which is off by just one letter and was just a few years earlier. This was when the Soviet military executed 22,000 Polish soldiers and military officers in the Spring of 1940 in a few locations, most infamously the Katyn Forest near Smolensk. I think a story on this one could also be well done, although it’s much more famous.
