I think it's because everyone expected her to go with a mature, R&B, sleek/chic sound/look that this debut really works. I've seen on social media both with South Koreans and the international kpop fandom (and even the anime and illustration community!), a lot of people who aren't even interested in OMG or YooA LOVE this concept so much. It's because it's such a ethereal/high concept feel that it caught a lot of non OMG listeners attention/eyes. Her stages are incredible and you can see how much she enjoys the concept (who wouldn't though) and she loves her dancers and performances a lot. I don't think it's fair to say her management pushed her for this, she's very mature in her stages despite the fairy concept, I think she's a smart enough girl to know that her concept needed to be special to take off. Funny you should mention Taeyeon's 'I' because I really did not like that debut, it was completely expected and actually disappointing, compared to YooA's, which is unexpected. Everyone was super surprised she got her first win with this but I think had she gone with her B-side Abracadabra (fantastic song and I'm glad she's performing it on all the shows too) but it's that chic, mature, sophisticated style that everyone THOUGHT they would get from her, I don't think she would have gotten her first win. Bon Voyage was eye catching and surprising and I think something that everyone really needed right now in this doom and gloom world. Also the fairy/fae imagery is Celtic, you can see it in the symbols in her stages, the markings and her accessories, not Native American or Pacific Islander. People who are calling her out for cultural appropriation need to realise that white people were also painting their faces.

@hollywooddarling4 жыл бұрын
@@Random-rv3us that's what i thought too! Many cultures, vikings, celts, scots, and east asian, southeast asian cultures all had tribal culture during pre-modern times where they also painted their faces and their folklore and mythology reflected that. For people who didn't know this though, her references are fairly broad and she uses pop culture stereotypes of fairies so I thought it made sense they would tie it with the Celtic symbols her stage performances and accessories often have so I thought that first (plus her shoes are all Gladiators...).

I actually think WM and YooA are very smart for going for Bon Voyage as a title track bc no one in the industry is doing a sound/concept like this, and I honestly do think that YooA is one of the few people in the industry that can pull off this concept flawlessly. YooA has one of my favorite voices in the industry and I'm glad she got to show off her singing more here. The EP is fantastic, the choreography is amazing, the visuals are stunning-the team behind YooA did an excellent job.

I think it's the decision of both YooA and WM ent. YooA as an idol is always exploring new themes in her performances so she decided to try something she never done before. My opinion about this is not that WM wants YooA to do something cutesy but rather I think WM takes on a gamble to promote YooA in this concept. You see nowadays songs that are accepted commercially tend to be songs that are heavy bass, dubstep-ish, lot of drop but WM and YooA is reaally taking a risk in this solo debut (and they really did it gooood) so kudos to everyone involved in this project I really appreciate all of you (even though they may not see this lol)

Yooa said that she wanted to show off her other talents and not only be known for being the dancer on "Oh My Girl". Yooa's personality is not outgoing, she can develop different concepts but she maybe not feel comfortable with many of them, I feel that she is more artistic. The name "Bon Voyage" was chosen for her debut to wish her a good solo start. In general, the song and the mini album are a gem, I really loved it and for the others it was unexpected and that caused them to turn around to see it, having something different from what is usually seen in kpop.

PD nim, from one die-hard miracle to another, please watch the performance video, or a live stage!! They focused on the story for the MV, but the dance does NOT disappoint! This song is such a breath of fresh air and the dance is just the same - refreshing, different, exciting. Also the B side she has been promoting alongside, "Abracadabra", is what you're looking for when you talk about a more mature sound for YooA. Worth watching one of those stages or the dance performance for that too, this debut has really brought out the best of YooA!
@SandyCheeks928374 жыл бұрын
I love how fresh and different this debut and song over all is! This is no pop, no R&b, no hip hop, it was COMPLETELY different and I thank YooA for not taking the mainstream road. That says a lot about her and as an artist. This is in a way a risk, because of the countless groups that are coming out with the same style and genre of music. This song was amazing and probably my favorite song this year! I don’t follow a lot of solo artists besides Sunmi and Kang Daniel and now YooA will definitely be on my list. This song is sooooooo up my alley. It also makes me feel emotional as I lost one of my pets at around the time YooA debuted so everytime I listen to it, I get sad but happy at the same time ❤️

Regarding the CA thing, here's a bit of someone's comment I read under the MV: "Very ironically, in this case, by claiming "cultural appropriation" for any of the aforementioned cultures [i.e. Native American tribes, various African tribes], one would actually be guilty of "cultural stereotyping" because by attributing the rather common face paint shown in this video to a single culture thereby oppresses the other cultures by refusing their claim to it." The fact of the matter is that this type of face paint is extremely common among a variety of cultures (including historical Korea) and doesn't precisely map onto a single cultural influence.

Incredibly cinematic and beautiful, definitely has some tribal and airy sounds. I don't necessarily agree with the view of this being a young and simple song, the "search for identity" theme is not something only young people can relate too and the video portraying fairies and what could be seen as a spirit animal is something that more and more people can relate too when it comes to spiritual research and identity, a close relationship with nature is also something we hear about more an more throughout society.

Actually, yooa herself said that she like to show a different side of herself with this song. Since everyone already knows she's good at dancing and everyone expected her to do a girl crush or sexy concept. This debut actually highlights her vocals and at the same time showed a different dancing style. If you watch her performance her moves are so graceful.
