I'm really glad that they didn't overdo the porgs to much. It wasn't minions levels of porg, like they aren't in every single scene. They are cute and loevable, but don't distract from the whole movie.

"Take that ridiculous thing off." To all the kids in the theater wearing Kylo masks, I completely understand why I saw a couple of you toss your masks in the garbage on the way out. The critic that said it all, a 9 or 10 year old kid's reply to his mom when she asked if he liked the movie. "It's stupid." (Tosses mask like Luke showed us how to do with his lightsaber.) Normally I'd think a kid like that is a brat, but I was in the same mood, so I can't judge.

I see a few people who appreciate your attitude in the replies. Um... while, in general, I lean towards pessimism but appreciate the value of optimistic people, I try to mostly appreciate their positivity rather than find it annoying, for this thing specifically... nah. Appreciating shitty movies made by uncreative people for a massive company such that it makes billions of dollars rather than tanking and forcing said company to instead hire creative people and leave them alone... it perpetuates the problem. I want everybody to acknowledge that it was shit, and work towards tanking it, so that we can get better movies in the future, instead of continuing to get shitty movies made by hack writers who think they're talented because their incoherent, poorly written and paced stories with shitty characters makes enough money that they aren't forced to acknowledge how shitty and hack-y and untalented they are.

There were a few others she missed. Porgs did die because Chewbacca was roasting a few on Luke's planet. Kylo Ren did cry real tears, Snoke looked to be pretty fricking tall (not a giant, but tall), you could argue that the Rebels/Poe shouldn't have trusted Laura Dern because she didn't tell Poe the plan, maybe Rey cut a limb during the fight in Snoke's room, and Rey does swim, she doesn't "learn" how to swim, but she swims.

Yeah, but the Light Side of the force usually represents natural forces, compared to the Dark Side which treats technology - particularly prosthesis - as the symbolic corruption of characters. Yoda's staff is wood, formerly a living thing, and furthermore, is not a lost limb. If Anakin Skywalker gets to look like Hayden Christensen when he passes to the Force Afterlife, why doesn't Luke get his arm back, and why does his inorganic, non-living metal arm transcend with him? Just saiyan...

Angry Drunken German It makes her really human and fascinating a character to me. She's been obsessing about her family for years when deep down she knows they probably never really cared about her. Also it's such a clever subversion of the 'chosen one' trope. It shows you don't have to come from an important family to be a hero. To me it's one of those storytelling decisions that are shocking but at the same time you're like "of course it makes so much sense". But, you know, that's just my opinion.

The fact that she's not special is what makes her a Mary Sue. When you look back at the prequels you see Anakin the exact same way. He was a male Mary Sue. And it's horrible writing, but some excused it because of Lucas saying "he was created by manipulating bla bla bla." It was a crap excuse then and it's a crap excuse now. Only now there's not even a lame excuse...

A Mary Sue is an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character. Often, this character is recognized as an author insert or wish fulfillment. They can usually perform better at tasks than should be possible given the amount of training or experience. Sometimes, the name is reserved only for women, but more often the name is used for both genders. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue It's basically an OP person that has no reason for being great other than the creator wants them to be for selfish reasons.

I didn't hate the movie, in fact I liked most of it. There were just specific moments I wasn't big on but I think it would have been a significantly better movie had Rian Johnson directed the entire trilogy with a cohesive style versus the foundation and ending being done by a errr less talented director. The shifts between the 3 movies is a bit jarring and the Force Awaken was a pretty uncreative movie. Rian is a fantastic director and it cannot be easy to just jump into someone else's vision and try and shape it to yours.

the weird director tug-of-war going on between movies really hurt the trilogy I think. It's very strange that the Disney even allowed RJ to ignore the other guys vision for the trilogy like he did. I mean, if people like Jenny are able to predict a lot of movie bits, it means it followed pretty standard storytelling conventions. It was a "yes, and!", not a "no, but!" like the rise of skywalker was. I read a lot of fan predictions for episode 8 and a lot of the story beats (kylo and rey's relationship, a downer ending, luke having done something bad to be in exile, etc) are pretty on the ball for a second installment.

I had always gotten that message from them, so having Luke confirm it was more of a validation of Prequel fans than an insult.

@StillOnTrack 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah that was my guess too, that it was because of the size and mass of the ship that the shockwaves created by warping spacetime had such a big effect, so wasting that much money on the construction of something with that much size and mass doesn't seem cost-effective, especially not for the rebels. At the very least though they should look into how to do a kamikaze warp like that remotely, without having to sacrifice anybody in the event that it's their only option.
@trapical
@trapical 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, they used a huge expensive cruiser to do it, but it utterly obliterated and ripped the entire dreadnaught in half. That means they could use a much smaller, cheaper ship, and it would still cause massive damage (even if that isn't enough to rip a dreadnaught in half, it would still cripple a larger opponant) Also, even if we pretend that it only is effective if a large cruiser does it... during the Death Star battles, the Rebels had large cruisers just as large as the one in this movie. When they were scared the Death Star was about to blow up Yarvin IV, why didn't send one of their same size large cruisers right into the Death Star's weapon? If it could rip a Dreadnaught in half, it would have at the very taken out a huge chunk of the Death Star.

After the prequel trilogy and the adequate and inoffensive _Force Awakens,_ we finally saw what a creative and skilled writer/director could do with _Star Wars._ That hadn’t happened since 1980. @@sircaptaintm4983 _The Last Jedi_ is the best _Star Wars_ movie from every angle you care to look at it. Its plot is more satisfying, its visuals more unforgettable, the action more dire, the deaths more meaningful, the effects more spectacular, the writing more insightful, the comedy more relieving, the heroism more striking and the themes more compelling than anything before it. (To balance the Force, the cinematic follow-up is the ridiculous parody of _Rise of Skywalker,_ a mindless, lazy pastiche of all the worst banalities that _Last Jedi_ entertainingly exorcized.) If you hated _The Last Jedi,_ you love _Star Wars_ for all the wrong reasons. I am still so disturbed by the response from self-described “fans.” Episode VIII has a character and a vision that apparently had no place in the Skywalker saga-it was _too good._ It is the only movie from any of the trilogies that fully delivers and surpasses the cinematic promise of _The Empire Strikes Back._ It made me love this franchise again and believe that the best _Star Wars_ stories have yet to be told. I am still willing to give _Star Wars,_ regardless of the production company, the chance to redeem itself. If we have to wade through tedious and unnecessary origin stories and prequels and series to find another gem like _Last Jedi,_ I think it’s worth it. That galaxy is still rich with potential for imaginative filmmakers willing to take _risks_ to find them.

@Dr.TJ_Eckleburg 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there was one throwaway line that hand-waved the logic of why they're in a slow-motion chase -- something that has literally never happened in Star Wars history, ever. When the entire premise of your film depends on a single line casually explaining away something that makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER, you have big problems. Anyone who thinks this is okay is just searching for reasons to like this shitty movie. How about this, Rian Johnson. In the opening of the film, the Rebel fleet gets into a life-or-death battle with the First Order ships, and destroys nearly all of them -- except for one, their largest. Both sides took heavy losses and the Rebels are down to a few damaged ships that are low on fuel. The remaining First Order ship is so heavily damaged it can't go to lightspeed and it can't communicate -- it can only pursue the rebel fleet at minimum speed as they make repairs. The Rebels know their only chance is to get to the planet, but they also know it's only a matter of time before the First Order repairs their ship and calls in for reinforcements or makes a lightspeed jump to catch them. Wow I just rewrote the entire plot of the movie in a way that actually makes sense and provides natural tension without depending on a nonsensical premise that nobody can buy into. And it literally took me fifteen seconds. Good to see the gang at Disney really earning those millions of dollars.

Star Wars has never produced a classically great film. It's not supposed to be some epic soliloquy. It's not meant to be an artistic masterpiece. It's fun, and a little cheesy, and novel. In my opinion, if I'm entertained and there's decent character development and chemistry then I'm happy. This was so entertaining and exactly what I expect and want from Star Wars. Overall I enjoyed it quite a bit. I enjoyed poes arc of learning to be a leader and not be a hot head. The ideas the film presents like whether the goodies and baddies are really that different is quite revolutionary for Star Wars, I wish the film dived a bit deeper into that stuff. Kylo saying "let go of the past" felt like a message to the audience which I liked. My problem though is Rey's arc. Rey throughout the film learns that everything isn't what she thought; her parents aren't important, luke skywalker is a lonely man who thought about killing his nephew and therefore birthed kylo ren. Rey, it feels like is being set up, that it worked so well for her last time it must now, so she goes to ren convinced she will save the day. Turns out she played right into the villains plan and now made ren the new leader, like a son with his dad's nuclear codes. Rey makes quite a lot of mistakes here, but she ignores them and continues on in the falcon. I would have loved to have had a scene or two of her dealing with her fuck ups. At the end of empire luke had lost his hand, his best friend, and had learnt his dad is Vader. Suddenly it's not as simple as he thought, but he's going to keep fighting with these new lessons learnt. Rey doesn't seem much at all affected. Rey feels at best like she is half way through an arc and this trilogy will be properly enjoyed when all 3 films are available. Unlike the original trilogy where all films stood by themselves. Kylo ren once again stole the show for me.

Ironically, she's the character I enjoyed the least. I didn't hate her, but Rose, Finn and Poe were a lot stronger characters in this film imo.
@Claverleykid1
@Claverleykid1 6 жыл бұрын
She was certainly my least favourite character. She does fit the Mary Sue profile, she is too good at stuff without much reason and in TFA solved most issues by herself and never needed help. This is in contrast to Luke who even at the end of JEDI needed to be saved by his dad. People will throw out Bruce Wayne as a male equivalent but we know how and why he is well versed in many subject to do with fighting crime and on top of that in his origin movie he regularly fails and needs help. In TLJ Rey at the least needed help from Ren and they tried to explain it away as "raw strength" similar to Kylo Ren. Kylo is flawed and has clear struggles and in writing terms is a far more stronger character than Rey. The scene where Rey was in the lift with Ren and it mirrors Luke and Vader from JEDI didn't work for me. I just don't buy Rey would be that sure of her 'Jedi'ness'

"he already learned from Yoda and Obi-Wan that jedi failed in the past and had students turn to the dark side. He would not have gone into a 15 year depression and blamed himself for that long because he lost a student" My friend he was ALONE. In a huge universe he was the ONLY jedi. And he didn't really have experience with this turning to the dark side thing, he only "heard" of it. He was not only full of hubris, but the responsibility fell super heavy on his shoulders. He had no one to help him, and only himself to blame. Plus it was not any student, it was his nephew; he feels he failed the Jedi, himself, Leia, Han, the universe... "Rey ... with no training was able to pick up a lightsaber in the Force Awakens and make a trained fighter look like a fool". As Snoke mentioned in this movie, he did look like a fool but then again he was broken by having killed his father. This thing about "let the past die" is what he MUST tell himself to justify everything he has gone through. Plus, Rey was pretty much the only light side force user, like Snoke said, darkness rises and light to meet. Force was channeled into her pretty strongly that is why she displayed such strength, she was overflowing with the force.
@PetersonSilva
@PetersonSilva 6 жыл бұрын
Bud you can be a Star Wars bitter, butthurt hater all you want. The problem is somewhere along the way your suspension of disbelief cracked and you can't put it back together; since you do not take the movie at its word, and you do not assume it's telling you a story in good faith, it doesn't matter anymore what anyone says. Rey has always fought well, albeit with a staff, because she had to learn how to take care of herself in Jakku. We see as much in TFA. She just adapted her style to lightsaber, plus there's the awakened force itself. Also, to say Rey fought better than Kylo is just your opinion, which I find weird (but then again, it is explained by the fact that you don't trust the story anymore and will find any reason to dislike it); Kylo fought more adversaries at once than her and didn't get injured as she did. Another example of the fact that you simply don't trust the movie: yeah, Snoke was killed. This is not contradictory (Snoke wasn't all that great), but rather telling (Kylo became GREATER). Luke: he was young. Yes, he felt alone and yes, he almost was brought to the dark side, but this experience is nothing like being a master yourself and having a student turn. They are very different things and contexts. About the humor, well, it's very subjective, I won't argue that. So, in general, you're falling prey (or using) the fallacy of numerical superiority (yeah, sure there's 1 good review for every 15 bad ones, only people who hate it are motivated to waste their times bashing it. Don't be ridiculous) and being really arrogant about this whole thing (reviewer agrees with me and doesn't like the movie = intelligent review). Ugh.

I want the new movies to be exactly the same as the original trilogy, but also they have to be original. And they need to not change the lore in any way, but also use the force in interesting new ways. They cannot bring back characters like Palpatine, but they also cant introduce new characters without at least 3-5 films of backstory and a relationship with existing characters. Now why wont Disney make a film like the REAL fans want?
@ashtonrooks7899
@ashtonrooks7899 4 жыл бұрын
This movie's real problem was that it crammed three mostly unrelated plots into one film. How do we know that? Finn and Rose fuck off for 3/4 of the movie to seek out a maguffin that didn't even work because the rest of the movie's plot still had to happen. Rey spends half the movie getting what amounts to a 5 minute lecture on force basics before getting mixed up with Kylo and F/O in ways that could have had nothing at all to do with the rest of the plot right up to the point where they contrive a reason why she ended up on the ground with the rest of the resistance again. Both these plots coul be easily severed, which is a hallmark of them both being grafted onto the main plot. Instead of rushing to get this "episode" out, I would have done two side-movies. First, contrive a different reason for Finn and Rose to go on basically the same adventure and more time dedicated to digesting the arms sales to both sides. Show us why the F/O is bad beyond vaguely authoritarian ways and angry pants speeches that convey nothing. Second side story with Rey/Luke/Ren could retain basically all the same material elements, just not conclude with literally crashing through the front door of the trapped in a cave plot. Then you get to 8 and suddenly you have way more screen time available to show why characters treat each other the way they do, why admiral evening gown doesn't trust Poe enough to explain her plan, and enough time to show why Luke has a big change of heart and shows up at next to the last second to intervene. Most if all, you don't have an absurd situation where within the same 18 hour window, Poe's friends zip across the galaxy and have entire adventures all their own and still have time to come back for the last stand. Also, doing it this way gives you an opportunity to develop the F/O so you have a better sense of wtf is the point of them, rather than just a grab bag of menacing traits crammed together with nazi imagery.

Not too far fetched DrZaious, except that we've never seen a person propel themselves with the force before. We've only seen them manipulate other objects. She wasn't necessarily using some sort of force shield either. We humans haven't done experiments to confirm this, but we can probably survive the vacuum of space for a number of seconds. I thought this film was a fantastic middle chapter. When it works, it REALLY works. I loved watching our younger characters learning to lose. Poe, Finn, Rey kept constantly thinking they could just will their way forward if they believed and tried hard enough (Rey thinking she just go convince Kylo to turn, Poe ignoring orders and losing all the bomber ships, Poe and Finn's failed plan to deactivate the tracker, Finn going full speed ahead at the cannon even though there was no way he was deactivating it). After watching things just ultimately work out for them in TFA, it was great to see them lose and react to that failure. My biggest complaint was that there wasn't enough consequence to their hubris. Dozens and dozens of faceless Rebels die as a result of their plans, but it's hard to feel the weight of that when we have no attachment. I personally loved the revelation that Rey's parents are nobody. Any other reveal would've been underwhelming and cliche in my opinion (i.e. having her be Leia and Han's long lost daughter, or be Luke's long lost daughter, etc). Plus it gives off that great Spider-Man-esque theme of ordinary people stepping up, doing the right thing, becoming heroes. It could've been anyone who was granted that power. And she ultimately has to chose to be apart of this. Not because her parents are or an ancient jedi master told her it's her destiny but because it's the right thing, much like Finn. The choice is an essential part of the hero's journey. Luke made the choice (granted even had the knowledge Darth Vader "killed" his father) But Rey has to make it with no ties to any of it. And people saying Rey is a Mary Sue....uh... yeah kind of, but what do you want? Do you want to see montages of her training for months? Do you want her to have been training for years before the story? I mean, there's no pleasing anyone. I always viewed her unlikely aptitude as the force rising up to balance Kylo and the sith, as Snoke stated. There's a lot of little moments of deus ex machina in this film, but it was so fun and such a great middle chapter that I didn't mind so much. Anyway, I loved this movie, I haven't even touched on the visuals either, and they're one of its greatest strengths. And plus there were no climatic light-saber battles. No Ren vs Rey. They're saving all that. You don't need light-saber rivalries to make a great Star Wars movie, we all know that by now.
