Apparently, in the game Marlene reveal that they made several failed attempts to make a cure, before they hope the sacrifice of Ellie will be the solution, and nowhere do they say they are 100% sure this would work either (and in the real world it would surely not, because this would then require loads of experiments by top specialists), they just believe and hope it will, and they clearly did not give her the option to agree to it or not, so they were going to do it no matter what, and so Joel was really left no other option that to do what he did.

@@Elganleap Marlene was on the same boat as Joel. Ellie was her Best Friend’s child, her not telling Ellie that surgery was going to kill her and wanted to avoid that talk was the same as Joel not telling Ellie he destroyed humanity’s only chance for a cure. Both were being selfish but think they are doing the right thing, because they didn’t want to relive the trauma of losing someone important to them.

@@adam_clown The way I see it as a parent - Firstly did he have that opportunity to give Ellie a choice? They are saying that Joel didn't give her a choice & took away the chance to save humanity. Which is logically & factually wrong. Joel gets to give Ellie a choice only in one scenario - If Marlene told Ellie about the killing surgery, Ellie said yes to die willingly & is allowed to meet Joel. Then & only then he can allow or deny Ellie's wish. That didn't happen. So as a parent he is left with only one thing to do & he did that thing. If anyone is to be blamed now or later in season2 that is Marlene & not Joel. Afterward though, he should have told Ellie a truth. Whatever her thoughts be, she would have understood his selfish/selfless motives by saving his daughter better.

For the show, they took out a lot of the distinction between good guys and bad guys, uncertainty over whether the Fireflies’ plan would work, and justification for Joel’s actions. They tried to make it more clear that Joel did the “wrong” thing her, but so far most people are still siding with Joel up until the lie. Part II has plot points that people like to spoil, so you may find it better to go through the games than trying to wait until next season without getting spoiled.

I dont think they really did. The show added a bit of explanation of the theoretical medical science behind the surgery but there was no certainty that it would work, it was still just the Fireflies' hope. Joel may have embellished the story he told Ellie afterwards a little bit more. The morality of the situation was identical and the events followed the game's story very closely. The Fireflies were going to sacrifice Ellie in pursuit of a cure without offering her a choice (because they weren't going to accept it if she didn't want to go through with it). They werent giving Joel any opportunity to see her and were willing to kill him if he tried to intervene, giving him no choice besides fighting or leaving Ellie to die. They took away her agency and treated him coldly, making him far less sympathetic to them. It was the same situation, it played out the same way, with the same justifications and arguments one way or the other.

@@mediumvillain In the game Marlene says they want to reverse engineer the growth whereas in the show she specifies how it works and how they’ll reproduce it. Questionable science aside, the show has a clear plan that they may have had from the beginning, where the game had hopes and dreams that quickly rushed to brain removal. Audiences question regardless, but the important thing is that Joel believes it would work, so they tried to make that clearer. In the game Joel gets attacked trying to save Ellie, and when he wakes up they escort him out without payment or his belongings just because he disagrees, while the escort makes it clear he wants to kill him and even tries before reaching the stairs. In the show they take Ellie in unhurt and escort him out because of a thinly veiled threat, but still give him his belongings as well as some of Ellie’s, and while they’re not friendly about it they do only escort him on the way out. You’re right that most of it amounts to the same, but these changes were made to make Joel’s decision less sympathetic.

Quite frankly, even the people saying Joel should have given her a choice are wrong. She's a 14 year old with survivors' guilt who has experienced immense trauma. Of course she would choose to die. She should have been allowed to grow up and THEN make a choice once she's a legal adult. Why should a child have to make the decision, her life or humanity? Why does the weight of the world have to be placed on her shoulders? The Fireflies were wrong for taking away her choice and her chance to say goodbye and Joel was wrong for lying, but I think he did the right thing getting her out of there.

I haven't played the game, but Joel taking out the entire hospital was absolutely chilling! You totally understand his motivations, even if you don't personally agree with what he's doing. Ellie certainly wouldn't support what he did. I think she would've wanted to sacrifice herself. Erik Voss brought up a great point that even if they had gotten the chemical markers from Ellie and used them to inoculate people, the infected would still be ravaging the planet. All the infected still try to attack Ellie. They can't tell she has the chemical markers. They would leave her alone if they did because they'd think she's one of them. The same would probably be true for anyone they inoculated with Ellie's chemical markers. With the inoculation, new people may not get infected from being bitten anymore, but they'd still get killed by clickers and bloaters. Everyone would still be trapped in the QZs and the like. Until they find a way to kill/cure ALL of the infected and ALL of the fungus, as well as inoculate regular people, the world will be mostly the same. Joel saving Ellie at the expense of the world doesn't seem as awful when you look at it that way. The showrunners and Bella said that Ellie chooses to believe Joel at the end. She suppresses all her suspicions. It's so sad that she's forced herself to forget that Joel broke her trust.

So real quick this is exactly where Game 1 ends :). So playing the game does not go past that "Okay" moment. I firmly believe Ellie would have sacrificed herself if given the choice. That’s exactly how the game ended, and it’s why it’s so legendary. You understood why Joel did what he did. Why Marlene did what she did. But at the end of the day, Joel just robbed humanity of their only real chance for a cure. Not likely that another immune person will be brought to another team of scientists with the facility to do it in and the soldiers to protect them. That was a billion to one chance. Even if it was only a 5% chance it would work, it’s the best chance humanity will ever have. And yes, Joel’s decision there is the inflection point for the second game. Glad you guys liked it!

It’s interesting to me that Marlene begs for her own life after allowing them to sacrifice Ellie for just a chance at a cure. Back in the first episode she talks up restoring democracy while bitching that people should just follow her orders without question. Marlene is just another David/Kathleen/etc.

IMO Joel should have at least told Ellie that she would have died if they did the surgery. Tell her that they fought him or something and that's why he killed them. Instead of strait murdering them all. Just tell her that he loved her and couldn't bare to lose her. She would have maybe been upset but she would have gotten over it eventually. Now with all those lies he told her, if or when she finds out, it might just cost him her trust for good.

What I’ve been thinking about is Marlene knew Ellie would die before she even sent her remember she was sent there because the doctor knew (remember the message she was sent )or they wouldn’t even want her there she knew cordys invade the brain there is no way she didn’t know that’s why there was no way she was even going to ask her and also planted the “you’re the cure” seed in her mind too no one knew if she actually was the “cure” and it’s her “purpose” telling that to someone who is alone and thinks they’re not important or have no self value makes them more determined to do something even reckless and actually whole “vaccine” was a maybe at best and seeing how incompetent the Fireflies are they couldn’t mass produce it anyway….but anyway in no way was she even attempting to give her a choice and in no way would she allow Joel to be awake to “ask questions”

@@Martin-117 in this scenario, despite some of the shitty ways they went about it (robbing Ellie of the choice, mainly), the fireflies are absolutely fighting for the greater good of humanity. Everyone in this complex situation is making understandable decisions. And Joel absolutely has no delusions about what he's doing. He just doesn't care because his main goal is not letting Ellie die.

I’d argue that if the fireflies were actually the bastion of all that’s good, they would’ve asked Ellie or even just told her. But no, they grab her, knock her out, and rush into a procedure that will kill her with no chance of further investigation or testing. Shitty scientific procedure and I definitely didn’t see an infrastructure that could accomplish anything close to what Marlene spouted off. Technology froze twenty years ago and there wasn’t a way to accomplish their proposal even with billions of dollars in funding and research of the pre pandemic world.

Here's my take - If anyone to be blamed here by Ellie later in the show is Marlene.. If that doesn't happen whatever showrunners present is a simply a stupidity. Here's why - Ellie was looking forward to go anywhere with Joel & live happily. She is clearly under impression that she doesn't have to die for this. Would she decide to sacrifice herself after knowing? Maybe yes. But Marlene didn't allow it to happen. Had Marlene given Ellie a chance to decide, allowed her & Joel to process what's gonna happen & given them time to say Goodbye, it could be avoided. I would blame Joel 'only if' he kills everyone even after knowing Ellie's willing to die. Not before that. Joel's actions are a direct result of Marlene's decision to hurry everything without giving Ellie a choice. They waited for 20 years, what's another few months! Joel gave Ellie a choice twice & respected her decisions both the times. ep.6 & ep.9. The only thing I don't like on Joel's part is that he lied to her. IMO he should have been upfront about why he did it. Ellie might have disagreed with his actions but she definitely would have understood his motives (selfless/selfish love for his daughter) better. But he was afraid of losing the relationship. I would be curious to know what Ellie would react when/if she finds out what happened. Will she be angry at Joel - for killing those people or only for lying to her? To sum up - If Marlene is not in super hurry & give some time to Ellie to respond, only then Joel gets to know what Ellie wants.. If Ellie says Yes & even then Joel kills everyone then & only then he is to be blamed.. If Marlene doesn't give that chance to Elli, then we don't actually know what Ellie might have said 'before' the surgery (Whatever she may say afterwards is her afterthought considering whatever happened). So before the surgery whatever Joel does is a direct consequence of Marlene's actions & only she is to be blamed! As a parent I would do the exact same thing as Joel did. I will take a blame only If I did those killings even after knowing my child's wish to sacrifice themselves. All the best to HBO. If they ignore this simple fact in next season then they will have very angry reactions from parents. Protecting the children from the 'predator' is a primal animal instinct.

Thank you for your reactions to this story. It's pretty simple Ellie wasn't given a choice. They were going to kill her always for others benefit. Standard situation ethics question they have been using since after WWII and the concentration camps and medical experiments carried out on prisoners there also without consent. Joel is ethically correct and nobody knows if killing Ellie for this experiment would even work as a cure for others.

Joel is ethically correct to kill 25 people, of whom 23 where not making the decision and sacrifice a possible cure for the whole World because of his personal emotion. Also making a comparisson to ww2 Experiments is wild. But Bella Ramsey said it. It will devide people.

It'll be interesting to see how you deal with the text of this going forward. The text is, Joel did a selfish, unforgivable thing. You seem not to get that yet, & it's understandable. Bella said Ellie would've chosen death. It was her purpose. What you do with that info is up to you.

“you seem to not get that yet” is kinda ignorant. many people understand that what he did was selfish. but it’s an accurate portrayal of love and the extents we would go to protect the people we love. you can acknowledge he was selfish, but also forgive him because he is acting as many, many parents would their children

@CarlyleKayla Didn't mean to sound condescending. Thanks for pointing that out. But if we forgive Joel, we forgive Kathleen. I found that to be a really effective inclusion in the season b/c of this very moment. The text is the text. How we process it is up to us, & that ultimately says more about us than anything in the text. Knowing where this goes, this moment always tears my guts out, it makes me angry & sad. I feel no justification or hope. I just feel Joel's guilt & Ellie's pain. It's heartbreaking, & they did a phenomenal job adapting it.

What does our reaction to it tell us about who we are as people.

Marlene made me angry taking the moral high ground with Joel if she was that convinced that Ellie would of gone ahead with the surgery knowing there was no guarantees that she was the cure and that it would also mean her death than why didn't she give her the choice instead of drugging her what a hypocrite, I'm with Joel on this except when he lied that was wrong I understand why he did it I just don't agree with it he should of just told her I think Ellie would of forgiven him eventually because she loves him he's her father now and they need each other

All folks gotta do is infect pregnant women then induce labour. I am sure contractions are helpful getting the good stuff in. then the mother would have to be put down, this would have to happen a couple hundred times from all around, for genetic diversity, those kids will grow up and have immune children, they will have inoculations given by the first hundred or so known immune, then they can just keep replicating but at the beginnings there would be sacrifice for sure. But then after, immunity.

Devil's Advocate: In Episode 2, they talked about bombing Jakarta (and everyone in it), Boston and other cities just to slow the spread of the infection. Tess seemed good with bombing Boston because "they had to try something". Jarkarta is a city of about 10 million people. How many Ellies died there (without consent) for an even slimmer change of stopping the spread? The mycologist lady who recommended the bombing knew full well she was condemning her family (presumably including her children and grandchildren) to death for the greater good of the world. Was she a "bastard"?

Thats the whole point! its not as cut and dried as that. Whether its right or wrong is entirely dependent upon your point of view. IE is humanity too far gone to be saved. Is it right the Fireflies have control over a cure? Would you allow daughter to be killed? Would the cure actually work? Was Ellie in the right state of mind even to make her own decision if she had the option? Should Joel have told her the truth? probably, but he was scared of losing her and of course there will be repercussions of that lie.
