The "zombie fungus" the scientist is talking about at the beginning is actually more nefarious than he said. It takes control of the ant and forces it to climb to the highest branch to make itself a target for a passing bird. A bird eats the infected ant and passes the fungi along through its droppings to be picked up by another ant moving by.

One of them does that. It's terrifying. Another one forces the ant to climb up and then clamp down super hard on a plant and then the fungus sprouts out of its head and releases spores. And then there's just a bunch that will outright kill you if you eat them. Fungi be scary

@@Rani-bv7hw Right. I think fungi gets a bad rap in this "talk" given the fact that fungus is the binding agent between life and death in that it's responsible for decomposition of organic material and distribution of minerals and components required for organic life. Fungi is a mesh that ties life together either through mycelia or through relationship dependence.

The premise is a great setup for a TV show, but one must remember. The faster a sickness spreads and the faster it exhibits, the easier it is for us to stop. Something as fast spreading as cordyceps would probably kill a few million people. But we'd stop it. The reason the Vid was such a problem was that it wasn't dangerous enough, and it took a week to develop symptoms. It hit the exact frequency of our shields.

I like that they didn't cast Ellie as some teenage beauty queen, not that Bella isn't pretty, but she's not your typical mainstream Hollywood beauty, which makes her feel more realistic, especially in this apocalyptic world. She just looks like your average kid you'd see at your local Walmart.

@youtpfpm6097
@youtpfpm6097 Жыл бұрын
Certainly because the other trials were based on games that were more difficult to adapt. There, a post-apocalytic world where characters must survive a pandemic making infected people dangerous, this has already been treated in films and series unrelated to a video game. It's easier when zombies, aliens and other viruses have already tested the public for this genre.

The opening for this series was completely different from the original game yet it was so freaking perfect! It described how dangerous fungi and Cordyceps specifically EVEN BETTER a than the game! And even the entire Outbreak Day flashback was somehow even done better. My heart was pounding the moment Sarah woke up. I’ve played the game 7 times already and thought I could prepare myself for Sarah’s death, but nope, I was almost as broken as Joel. As for Ellie, Bella Ramsay was as perfectly cast as Ellie as The rest of the cast was. And in the behind the scenes feature for this episode the creator Neil Druckman said that Ellie was almost happy watching Joel protect her because she has never had a parental figure in her life. God this show is going to be AMAZING!
@nomisunrider6472

I think the fascination with the apocalypse is just taking all our fears to the logical endpoint of "what if literally everything broke all at once? What then?" and seeing what's left after that endpoint, with the deep human hope that we will survive somehow. There's a lot of Native American apocalyptic fiction because they already faced an apocalypse with Old World diseases and colonization and the anthology Defying Doomsday about disabled people in the apocalypse centers the fact that disabled people already have to survive and thrive in a world not made for them.
@mediumvillain
@mediumvillain Жыл бұрын
Welp, there's a not insignificant chance many things will break down all at once in our own society bc of how poorly its been governed for so long (or the priorities of those in charge of governance). There's a demonstrable decline in many things and it has not been managed very well and/or outright ignored, made substantially worse by the pandemic which has also not been managed well and/or outright ignored. Life expectancy has dropped sharply as just one statistical indicator. If we aren't facing collapse we are at least facing a stark decline, and even if many people dont accept that at face value they feel it and internalize it.
@nomisunrider6472
@nomisunrider6472 Жыл бұрын
@@mediumvillain I'd argue that that isn't quite true, there are some things that have gotten significantly better when you look at it from a historical view (infant mortality down, slavery outlawed, growing gender equality, rising literacy, less war), but on the other hand yes, there's the mismanagement of the pandemic, the slow march of climate change, nuclear weapons, and radicalization. I'd argue that it won't be all at once but a slow march and that slow march makes it possible to reverse or adapt, but the idea of it happening in a sudden, apocalyptic way makes for a better story. And then of course there's those assholes that HOPE for an apocalypse so they can get rid of all that nasty "societal progress" and just start shooting people they don't like again.

You're absolutely right about them having the perfect framework for a good show. If they can just add little bits of info to the already great story, they'll be golden. Just bring that story to life in a way that works for TV.

although a few of the game voice cast have roles in this series, Merle Dandridge is the only one playing the same character as her game role of Marlene.
