The misconception is that this was a tragic end. This is the only true happy ending we will probably see in the show. They got to go out together, happy and on their own terms.

For real- they grew old together and died peacefully in their sleep. That's as happy an ending as any of us could get.

In this version, Bill and Frank got 16 happy years together. In an apocalypse, that is unheard of. Having an ending so fueled by their love for one another is just the cherry on top. They died feeling safe and loved. 💜 Their ending was beautiful, not tragic.

They got years of happiness together, and they got to leave on their own terms. There were more good days than there were bad ones. And to me, I think that's more than enough. The love was there, however short on the cosmic scale, but it WAS there. And that's the important bit.

the point of the series is to show us the beauty of nature and the human soul despite a horrible apocalypse. A lot of people will complain that they skipped two chapters in the game for this but i think this was an incredible alteration of the material that made Bill way better as a person. There's also those minority of people that say this is just grooming kids but hey homophobia can go eat a d%ck :D

What made this episode so brilliant for me were the subtle details: The almost shot for shot remake of their first meal together, followed by the reveal that Bill now sits next to Frank. The placement of Frank's paintings, visible as Joel and Ellie enter the house. The realization that Bill placed and planned everything for Joel to find prior to his final dinner with Frank. That Bill and Frank marry each other next to the piano where they shared their first kiss. The pain Frank feels as Bill wheels him over the threshold. And the one that murdered me the most: after establishing, in the night raid, that their bedroom is upstairs, it is revealed that due to Frank's illness, they'd moved into the downstairs bedroom. All of the memories that took place up those stairs, and Bill was happy as long as he was in the same room as Frank. This was truly one of the most beautifully acted, written, directed, and shot episodes of television I've seen in life.

I always feel like noting that since the outbreak happened in 2003, federal same sex marriage that came in 2015 never happened in this world, yet this show still managed to give us a story of two older gay men falling in love and living a full life together and getting to make choices on their own terms in a world where suffering is the default. It’s so powerful.
@__-fm5qv
@__-fm5qv Жыл бұрын
I also like how they treated a gay relationship as just that, a relationship. Normally in TV and media they like to hammer home the fact they're gay so much they forget to actually build the characters and relationships. Here, it's just two guys that fall in love and build a life together, it really is that simple. And it's one of the most genuine and moving romantic stories I've seen in a while as a result!

In older houses, especially ones built in the country if you have the windows open and one door closes it'll create a draft. That's why the door to the bedroom closed when the front door did. It was a brilliant stylistic choice, knowing that Bill and Frank are dead inside there, it was almost as if it were Bill and Frank saying, "No, Joel. You don't want to see this." Fucking BRILLIANT. I could write a paper on this episode alone.

Pretty sure he said in the note that he closed and locked the door, so don’t come in. The whole point was to close that room off and leave the window opened so the house wouldn’t smell to high heaven of death. Leaving it open until they came wouldn’t really help much if at all even with windows open because you never know the directions the wind will blow.

This felt like a movie that I guarantee would be on every critic’s shortlist for best picture at the Oscars. I cried once every 15 minutes this entire episode. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful and emotionally powerful episodes of tv I’ve ever seen. Neil Druckman said in the BTS video after the episode that he and Craig Mazin had this philosophy on the show was “when should we deviate and when should we come back, if it’s kinda the same or worse then they stay (completely faithful to the game), if it’s better we deviate”. I’m SO DAMN HAPPY THEY DEVIATED! And I’m so happy that it ended with them dying together instead of Bill just forever bitter and living alone like in the game. Also I loved the Mortal Kombat 2 cameo. And of course Ellie’s favorite character would be Mileena. Tragically yesterday Annie Wershing who played Tess in the game passed away at 45 due to cancer. So when they showed the flashback with Tess and Joel I cried. Rest In Peace Annie Wershing.❤❤

I bawled like a baby during this episode. This was a masterpiece done by the team. Dear lord the emotions. Such a wonderful story of finding love and making it grow in even the harshest world. My god. If they dont win all the Emmys for this it is a robbery

I was waiting your reaction! This was one of the best episodes in TV history for me. I loved that when Bill was singing Lisa's song on the piano he stopped crying at "I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time" and when the episode ends Lisa sings the same lines but this time it was me sobbing.

Linda. But yes, the callbacks in the episode were very touching. I had the same thing when the last meal Bill prepared for them was the same as the first meal they had together, and the same wine. It had meaning and it's because we feel like we've been with them the entire 16 years of their relationship.

Took me a second watch to realize Frank was played by the actor who played the hotel manager in season 1 of ''The White Lotus''. (and then that he was Nick De Noia in ''Welcome to Chippendales'' on Disney+)

I was sobbing through like the entire last half of the episode after Frank says it's his last day. Through the dinner scene, then it hit me again with the note mentioning Tess, and again when Ellie plays the song again on the radio.I was a WRECK. Amazing how one episode could have such a beautiful and complete arc for both those characters.

In a world of disarray, when everything else everywhere is falling apart, it's so nice to see that only thing that wins in the end is love. Bill + Frank were so lucky to live a long life together and to also go out on their own terms.

Adam’s reaction to that disturbing transition shot of the baby’s clothes lying in the bone pile to the flashback sequence of the same baby being comforted by its mother was exactly what I was thinking. I’m not mad they included it by any means, in fact I really appreciate the fact that they’re willing to go to that length, it makes it feel very very real. It’s just that I have a little niece and newborn nephew and I just hated seeing it.

Sure, you can bring the funnies like the absolute kings that you are, but what I really love is that you get so emotionally involved in the shows you watch on here - you are ALL OF US. Well edited, well commented. I got a little miffed when you started jumping down the episode's throat when the transition of the massacre victim's dress occurred, but that was a brutal fakeout. The 'last card, and they played it' line was gold. Good job.

Don't worry, Adam. I watched it twice as well (this being the second time) and seeing you guys in tears had me bawling all over again. This episode hit so close to home for me after the Ten Years Later mark. I lost my husband last year. He had an incurable condition just like Frank (early onset Alzheimer's) and chose euthanasia as well. We also couldn't live the life we wanted due to the pandemic lockdowns (granted, not as severe as in the show, but it still feels a lot more familiar post-pandemic). Travel, museums, theater, all things he loved we couldn't do, but at least we had each other. He was divorced and never wanted to marry again, but 2 months after he announced his choice for euthanasia he asked me to marry him, which we did 13 days before his passing. He passed on February 25 and the day before we went to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam with 2 of our best friends and had dinner at our favorite restaurant, the Pancake Ship (run by friends of ours). We made it the best day, just like Bill and Frank. He died in our bed in my arms, just like Bill and Frank. The fact that Bill chose to go together with Frank was so beautiful and heart wrenching. I completely get his choice, even without him explaining it. I'd be lying if I said part of me didn't want to join my husband. The thing is, when you have a partner who needs care and support on a daily basis, they really become your purpose. For Bill doubly so, giving Frank a home and protecting him and later also taking care of him when he couldn't do it himself. When you do that long enough, their passing leaves a gaping hole in your life because everything you've programmed yourself to do every single day is suddenly redundant and you're left empty handed. So I envy Bill's choice, and for him it made sense. P.S.: A huge virtual hug to you, Adam. You look like you really needed it and we can't ever get too many hugs. And of course you too, Jay. I think I'll head over to Patreon and become a patron now.
