@@jackhilton4285 In the show they seem to be suggesting that Pike has an inherent source of healing power in her blood. I speculate that she may be a descendent of the Everlight's mortal incarnation from back during the Calamity, which would mean she would have a small portion of divine essence within her. It'd explain why she started feeling and looking terrible as soon as she entered the Hells, since the Everlight said that her domain of Redemption is anathema to the Hells, so her particular divine essence would be stifled by that plane. It'd also explain why she can perform healing magic with her blood directly. Either way she can probably rely on that until she rekindles her connection with the Everlight. I suspect her connection is being blocked by the Whispered One amulet.

I *think* that if Vax simply wanted to release Percy's soul from the gun so he could be free to move on to his appropriate afterlife, she would not have 'dissaproved'. I think her main objection was the ressurection afterwards.

Which is kind of a different attitude she had in the campaign. Where she was fine with resurrection, it was actual manipulation of the dead she had a problem with.

@@DracheLehre That would be kinda mean for Matt to force this choice on Liam (Vax's player). Either he gets to be a paladin, or his friends never get resurrected. In the show, NPCs can be more demanding and even forceful, that's why there's a change in attitude. Frankly, "You can resurrect people, but only some. Only those whose fate is to not be dеаd yet, as opposed to others who have to stay dеаd" is a very unclear commandment, as opposed to a simple "No"

Him becoming a paladin was more so because of the armour, because it was attached to the ravenqueen. In fact in the live show, vax was the one to seek out the raven queen because she brought his sister back and because of the armour, if I'm remembering right.

And in D&D resurrection IS Necromancy, but the Matron would make a few vague exceptions for when "it's not their time yet". Edit: But Matt did specify that if someone on the team would use a powerful spell like "True Resurrection" that works without any restrictions and can bring anyone back no matter the time or state of their body, Matron would be VERY MUCH against it.

I always thought she was fine with any resurrection except for wish or vampirism etc. I also know resurrection is labelled as necromancy, pretty much all healing is but almost no one really rules it that way, which is why it is changed in the 2024 rules as well.

I know it seems unfair for the Raven Queen to have such rigid views, but remember: She is a goddess, bound by her fate as a bridge between the living and the dead. For her champion to undo death, even to save a friend's soul from a demon, is breaking the cycle. But even though she warns him of the risks to himself, she still shows him the path because she knows he will make his own choices. Look to our own mythology; bringing someone from the dead has always had a price of some sort.

I still think they could have painted her in a better light if RQ first instructed him to release Percy into the proper afterlife. There are some odd implications if RQ was indifferent to Percy's eternal suffering and Vax had to bring up the subject himself.. I think the best way to interpret it is that RQ was giving him the hints via the armor in the first place.

As cruel as it sounds, Orthax had claim over percy's soul twice over - because of the original deal, and because of Ripley. As far as the Raven Queen is concerned, she DID do her job as she ushered Percy to the fate he himself walked towards. To further my point, we saw human souls in the Hells. How is that peaceful?

So they didn't do A Bard's Lament. For those who don't know, Scanlan leaves on bad terms with the rest of VM. They changed it here, one, because it wouldn't make sense, and two, because they didn't know if they were gonna get a Season 4, so they wanted to end it on a high note. Apparently, though, we will get a payoff for that moment in Season 4

First off: The look is great. Second: Thanks for your commentary. I didn't really pick up on the significance of Vax and Percy calling each other "Brother," and how important a relationship that has become to them. They have come a long way from Season 1 and 2. This season has throw me for a bit of a loop, because there have been some big changes from the campaign. Not in spirit, but in how the plot has unfolded. They are good changes, making for a better, more propulsive narrative. It's just meant letting go of some of the spontaneous moments that Critters are very attached to. Seeing you respond organically to the story as it exists in animated form helps me with re-forming those attachments, to different moments, or changed moments. Thank you.

They showed the setting leading up to it and it was a different Ziggurat, the same one where Raishan was conducting her own undead ritual. Keyleth's come a long way since Season 1. She utilized all she learned across three seasons to outlast and outwit Raishan in order to finish her, marking her the DECEASED Deceiver. That, and she accomplished so much. She survived undeath and dragons, and giants, went to hell and back, came into her own as a leader-to-be on a path she's forged all her own, and found love that keeps her tethered. And I'm happy that at long last... Vox Machina gets a chance to _live._

yeah I got a prometheus vibe from him in that episode, the show in particular did really well with showing percy's arc as one tragically doomed to end the way it did until the moment Vax went in to bring about this change. Narratively Percy's journey from revenge to redemption to damnation seems absolutely fated, so I totally get how the matron would regard his interference.

Also since the threads of fate were still guiding Vax, that could also be viewed as the Matron still helping him. Knowing her lore, I think that exchange was mostly the Matron not wanting another of her faithful succumbing to the temptation of necromancy and throwing the cycle of life and death out of wack. I won't spoil anything, but the Matron is more sympathetic than she lets on.

So it's not so much that Percy was killed by an Orthax gun, but when Percy made his original deal with Orthax he sold his soul. It doesn't show much in the show, but a big part of the Matron's domain is determining your fate and following fate, which a big part is consequences. In that regard, Vax was breaking Percy's fate because Percy "made his own bed" so to speak.

Slight spoilers for anyone not checking the credits: for those who didn't clock it the first time (me included), the voice of Undead Thordak is *not* Lance Reddick. It is, in fact... Levar Burton. Huh. I mean... given how much it was on the minds of everyone regarding how much Lance got to do before he passed... I think it's just okay. They kept it tasteful, they kept it in the extended TTRPG/nerd media family, and crucially, they didn't do it in a way that outshone Cree Summer as Raishan. Everyone focuses on Reddick as Thordak, and rightfully so, but I think Cree has gotten to play some real depth with this villain, and I hope that more people learn more about her and her prolific career as a BIPOC voice artist. 😊

They've said they want 5 seasons but only the fourth is greenlit right now. Pacing wise I think 5 would be ideal, it would allow for S4 to focus on some smaller character centric stuff while the big arc simmers in the background. Funny enough this was set up to be a finale to the campaign. Matt designed it so that if the players felt their characters stories were done after the Chroma Conclave the campaign would have a natural end point. Regular resurrections are actually fine to the Matron, if a divine magic resurrection spell succeeds then as far as she's concerned it was that persons fate to come back. "cheating" fate through things like undeath, necromancy and similar however are abhorrent to her.

I was SO SO excited to see my favorite natural 20 in CR history adapted and I think they did it so well! (Vex getting a Nat. 20 to persuade Percy to come back) I just love Percy and Vex so much! And since resurrection magic is different in TLOVM than in DnD, I thought tying it to Vax and his Matron of Ravens deal was a great choice in lieu of the DnD 5e rules with Matt’s homebrew resurrection DC.

Got a little whiplashed by the Mercer cosplay ngl XD Shout out to Cree Summers as well for continuing the menace of Raishan even as a Dracolich, though it would've been nice if Keyleth feebleminded her like in the table (where an NPC, Kerrek a guest player who had a bond with Keyleth, killed her) to call back to Raishan undermining her intelligence. Additional props for Sam for doing this season and songs with throat cancer too. Reviving Percy and Scanlan's departure were two big moments from the campaign; resurrection is different in Critical Role, once you're dead dead the ritual requires several factors that will either help or hinder the minimum roll the player must make, the soul would also have to be willing - and up to the ritual Taliesin was not sure Percy would be willing, even with the group dispelling Orthax's hold on his soul, he even had a 'in case of my death' letter to the rest of Vox Machina - which I believe some of the group found and read but decided not to confront Percy over. It was only the group's speeches in order to reach out to Percy's soul, including Vex's declaration of love, that convinced him to let Percy come back. The departure of Scanlan however has been a bit of a letdown by fans. The 'Bard's Lament' was a visceral and iconic moment of the campaign; Scanlan had promised Kaylie he'd survive the battle against Raishan, but he died. The group performed the ritual to bring him back, but also brought Kaylie along to partake in it, which enraged Scanlan and he unloaded on the group. The group felt hurt by his accusations of them not caring for him, since they went through a lot to bring him back, but Scanlan pressed them on how well they knew him 'what's my mother's name?' and left the group in shock, Pike wasn't present for this and Sam said if she were he probably would've stayed. Doing it differently in the show has left a mixed response, since the departure was a bit more amicable, but part of it appears to be due to them not knowing if they'd get another season and not wanting it to end on a downer. Still it was a good season, there are enough questions to not be sure how the story will play out, and we will have to wait for Season 4 to answer them.

I believe we have an unconfirmed 5th season in the works ( unions have contracts for it). Makes a lot of sense considering their was a gap between the conclave and the whispered one. I don't want to spoil, but I think there is enough potential content in this break to justify a season. Personal prediction is that the whispered one will be teased throughout till his reveal at the end of the season.

Did you catch that Raishan was prepared for all of their vestiges? Even the Plate, as she effortlessly blew it out and knocked Pike off the board? That, and feeling no pain means that they couldn’t hurt her. And Vax was easily immobilized, so speed was out. Even Cabal’s Ruin, had they retrieved it, would have been useless as she would have been immune to even redirected magic. It’s a good thing Keyleth didn’t need a vestige to end her. She just needed to use what she had on hand… and in the ground.

It's also a (minor) criticism of mine that they don't elaborate on many of the other gods and what their whole deal is. I don't know that much about campaign 1 and a bit more about campaign 2. But in campaign 3, they become pretty relevant, and I feel like the viewers need to have a better idea of what their whole 'deal' is *before* they become relevant to the story. I wouldn't even mind a little OVA/in between seasons one-shot episode that is just some of the members of vox machina and or keeper Yennen or whomever explaining in their own words what the gods' domains are and the big strokes history of the world of exandria is

i think it’s because the average tv viewer does not fully understand Fantasy Religion. New Viewers to Vox Machina need time for the Viewer to understand the difficult lives of mortals in a fantasy planet before moving on to the deep lore. Look at all the reactors who misunderstood the Everlight’s ‘every path is a holy one’ message or they constantly forget that the Vestiges were meant to “strike down the gods” and always want them to Voltron. The Viewers weren’t ready for further information about the Gods because they see them as MacGuffins that just exist for action. They don’t take the Vestiges seriously, so why would they take the Gods seriously. I guarantee almost every reactor has forgotten that Fenthras “could shoot arrows strong enough to wound a Titan, and never inquired what that actually means. Even Vax sees the Calamity once in ep 2, and most reactors never mentions or inquires about the many gods that were there in their episode wrap up. Plus the writing team (cr cast and other writers) are not going to elaborate on it too extensively to avoid a tidal wave of exandrian history that the average viewer clearly weren’t ready for yet. I think Zerxus was a great character with a compelling enough story who interacted with a god like Pike to get the viewer to become more curious about the gods. “There is no difference between the Gods above and below. THEY ALL LIE.” is very compelling. The gods aren’t going to matter in seasons 1-3 but we both know how important they are in the Future season(s).

to explain the rashaun fight dragons basically also have the option to be spell casters in game and rashaun is more of a spell caster then the others that blue flame isn't fire at all it's the spell disintegrate which is why pike almost turned to ash she also used telekinesis spell i think on those cubes she was using a catapult and wall of force spell sorry i really love how the visualized these spells in the show so much

3:03 I think it's both. In DnD attacks can have multiple elements combined in it, especially if it's something legendary, like a soul of poisonous dragon in a rotten corpse of a red dragon that was powered by the soul anchor gem. I think it would be hard to imagine but it's something like a fiery hot poisonous gas, that's why it's blue colour.

23:53 so, possible spoilers, but the dnd god that she's based on, the Raven Queen, is an Ascended mortal, I.e. A wizard who figured out how to use magic to depose, kill, and replace an existing god. It means she has a much different relationship with creation and her domains than the others. Not better or worse, just different.

By the way Omni1 I made a comment on I think the previous video episode 11 where because of how this season ended and where the first campaign was as far as gameplay I rough estimated that the next season could be the last season to round out the adventure from the game, but I could be wrong because it depends on how they want to play out the villain. So in retrospect, they could do it in one season, but I believe it may be two seasons because of who the final villain is and what’s left to tell in the story. Does not mean that they could not do it in one season, but basically I did a rough episode accountof the first campaign based on the story arcs in each season so chroma conclave took two seasons and roughly I saw how many episodes of actual gameplay was so for the number of episodes left in the gameplay it’s roughly around the same so they could technically pull it off into seasons if they wanted to, but we are getting to the end and that’s all I’m gonna say no spoilers

In the campaign, Keyleth's Vestige - the Spire of Conflux - was in the stomach of Yenk, the demon they brought out to fight the dragon Vorugal. Since they didn't go that route this time, even campaign watchers don't know where or if it will pop up.

That's a different black orb on top of a different ziggurat at the end there. Although it would be both hilarious and creepy if all that was going on in Whitestone's basement. I don't think the Raven Queen was so much intentionally punishing Vax as warning him of the natural consequences of his actions.

The gods are sort of bound to their own rules. Where souls go after they die is NOT part of the Matron's domain. (generally it's up to whichever god the person's behavior aligns with) And souls being stolen/bought/contracted/eaten etc by fiends is considered natural - the soul/slave trade is going strong. If you make a deal with a fiend, it's not the Matron's place to interfere. The Lord of Torment (Asmodeus) has jurisdiction over the hells. Though in the game, they differentiated between the Nine Hells (devils) and the Abyss (demons), so technically the Matron would be stepping on Tharizdun's domain to free Percy from a demon contract. (but personally, I always thought it was stupid OP that Orthax was able to collect uncontracted souls just because they died via gun) The Matron is the only god that wasn't actually present when the gods put their afterlife system in place because she's the only one who used to be mortal. (and Tharizdun, he's some other Lovecraftian eldritch horror species and we have little info) So she's probably the one most likely to disagree with the system. Not that she can just defy it when she wants to - and she actually does consider the life/death cycle sacred. I'd go out on a limb and guess she'd be fine with getting Percy's soul into a better afterlife plane. Cheating death indefinitely is her main issue.

As far as they Raven Queen being whack, she really is less a goddess of death and more the goddess of the transition from life to death. As far as she's concerned, once the soul has transitioned that's it. Can anyone explain why Thordak's body shrunk so much? If you go back and look at Grog killing Brimscythe compared to Raishan/Thordak trying to eat Vax, like Thordak's body shrunk to about Brimscythe size. Potential minor campaign SPOILER below: . . . . . . . Also, Scanlan's departure, hugely different in the campaign. He left so hard everyone else at the table thought he collabed with Matt to end the campaign, lol. He made Laura cry! Good times.

The Matron's domain is death, not necessarily the afterlife. To her, a death is a death, even if the conditions were unjust. Even if the soul's destination is due to foul play. All she aims to do is shepherd souls after their lives have expired. It's not in her domain to right wrongs. That's stepping into the domains of justice and fate.
