This scene is really telling of the impact Mark had on the ER. All people had to say, was "it's Mark's letter." and everyone just stops what they are doing and listens to it!

Idk who's reaction tugged more at the heartstrings... Carter's, as he read Corday's message to himself first and then out loud, or Susan's, as she realized Mark had died before Carter continued reading. Such powerful acting.

Susan (Sherry Stringfield) really makes the scene, for me anyway. The acting. The really special relationship Susan and Mark had. Her remaining there, frozen as everyone slowly walks away....it's so goosbumpily poignant and moving. I'm forever repeating to myself; "it's only a tv show, it's only a tv show". "Get a grip, it's only a tv show". But it never really helps. Such a damn good tv show. To this day I still feel like I'm watching the series for the first time, every time I watch it....despite watching the series in it's entirety many times, and watching some individual episodes DOZENS of times. Quality shit.

Dear ER Gang, So here I am, out on the beach at 5:30 in the evening. Elizabeth is sitting with me and drinking juice, but I'm all about the Mai Tai's. The sun is going down, Rachel is dipping Ella's toes in the ocean as they head off on their quest for the perfect seashell. Weirdly enough, I find myself thinking, you know what would make this moment complete? Some jogger dropping to the sand, short of breath, so I can swoop in with a piece of bamboo to perform a nice, clean intubation, fix the guy up, and send him off with a good, simple dispo. Which I guess is my way of saying that I miss you all and that dingy place. Lots of times I thought I should have chosen a different career or go into private practice, something easier, less grinding, more lucrative, but since I've been gone, I realize that outside of doing what I'm doing right now, sitting on this beach with my family, staying at County all those years, doing what we do on a daily basis was the best choice I ever made. I know what you're thinking, but trust me, it's not so hard to appreciate once it's over. As much as a part of me would like to believe that the ER can't go on without me, the smarter part realizes that you are an incredible group of doctors and nurses who approach every day with such skill, compassion and thoroughness, that when it comes to patient care, I know my absence will hardly be felt. As for friendship and comradery, well, that’s another matter. In order to leave, I had to go the way I did, but I wouldn't want any of you to think that that meant I didn't value each of you and the years that we worked together, or that I didn't have things of a more personal nature to say. Most of you, I think, have an idea of what those things might be without me writing them down, but still... Ella is laughing and waving for me, Rachel’s found her shell. Mark. Mark died this morning at 6:04 a.m. The sun was rising, his favorite time of day. I sent this on so that you might know he was thinking of you all and that he appreciated knowing you would remember him well. Elizabeth Corday

"Post it on the floor Frank." "That last part?" "The WHOLE thing!" And Carter's double/triple head tilt and "Mark died this morning..." as his voice cracks. The 2 saddest parts of this scene. Lewis lowering her head was good and Haleh confirming "I'm not so sure of that" are the next 2 and I think the very real fact that them getting the letter at all and literally thinking the whole time until it was too late that it was just a letter from Mark saying how things were going and they weren't even thinking it was possible he had finally passed rounds out the top 5. I've also always said/thought it was VERY telling that everyone was at the desk listening except Weaver. Sure the way they had her find out was sad and very well done & that was probably the BIGGEST reason they did it for drama and more emotion, but what it would represent was probably not lost on the show runners. I always say that even though this easily could just be a coincidence that she didn't walk over at that exact moment (she may not even have been in yet, but its a show: how hard would it have been to WRITE into the script that she could have been there) if you need one episode/action that absolutely proves & confirms that Weaver was not "part of the group/family" this was it.

It means a lot that the show dedicated three whole episodes to Mark's death (his last day in the ER, this episode, and On the Beach--not to mention all the buildup to it). The crew knew what Mark meant to the show and to the audience, and they made sure to give him the sendoff he deserved, even if it was heartbreaking.

That’s the thing about shows like this that are remarkably written and wonderfully acted. After a time, the characters become real, however fictitious they may be and when they leave, especially if they “die”, we grieve right along with the other characters. Dr. Mark Green was our friend. It was painful to say goodbye - even though we could always go back to previous episodes.

I definitely believe Mark’s death hit John and Susan the hardest. Aside from Elizabeth since he was her true love. Susan and Carter were with a mark from season 1. Luka and Abby respected Mark but it didn’t hit them as hard since they were introduced in season 6. Susan was bawling in the locker room and John was comforting her. Mark was very much respected by the staff and it was heartbreaking to see them realize Mark was gone.

Me! OMG this scene just broke my heart when I saw it. I was a young, impressionable teenager in Medical Magnet schooling in the mid-90's when I saw it, ironically learning to be a CNA.

THANK YOU so much for posting!! The last scene (I think last scene) where Carter comforts Greene's patient is BEAUTIFUL. Really hoping you can post that one

I like the scene just after this one as the pages of the letter are blown off the wall that we see Carter in the same green scrubs as Mark always wore

Most tragic death is definitely between Lucy Knight and Mark Greene but most hilarious death, definitely Romano...

Still laugh so hard at Romano. I wanna know what he did to helicopters to make them hunt him down haha

@@SarahBlueJ I think the helicopter planned it but had unfinished business because of the fact that he survived the first time... hahaha

As a direct result of Mark Greene’s death, I cannot listen to that specific version of ‘Over the Rainbow’

I can, because I had already heard it before this episode. It was used in the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore film 50 First Dates
