It absolutely annoys me when the Hispanic characters have to throw in random Spanish words. Yes, speaking Spanglish is a real thing. However, you don't need the characters to say hola, adios, and chica to demonstrate their Latinidad. Either have them speak full Spanish with their family, or better integrate Spanglish. There's also Hispanic people who don't speak Spanish and that's fine too. Also, the tweevil erasure is unacceptable!

The accuracy and ease with which that supposedly "deaf" character read people's lips, while _not even looking at their faces most of the time,_ snapped my suspension of disbelief.
@AndSoWeLaughed3 жыл бұрын
Really annoyed me as well that they make out that he knows (or is fluent) at ASL and then we never see it. But THEN I spoke to deaf people and opened my mind and it’s clear his hearing was lost at a later age, which means he might not actually be fluent in ASL. And then when he suddenly starts dancing at the party without actually knowing what’s going on, since no one else signs… but then I was like okay not everyone deaf cannot hear every single sound. However! I don’t even think they thought about it that deeply, because half way through they just forget he is deaf (or hard of hearing). It seemed very half assed. He read everyone’s lips and no one even tried to learn sign language. Trash.
@alphabol86762 жыл бұрын
The actor who played him isn't even deaf so I'm gonna go with they didn't care. And he also had to be taught how vibrations work which is something no human beings with a functioning brain needs to be taught let alone a deaf person. It's really annoying that they wanted to reap the rewards of including a deaf character but didn't want to do even the bare minimum required to respect deaf culture and deaf people.

I feel like the casting for Yasmin was off; the actress who plays her isn't Latina at all. She's half Spanish but Spanish people and Latinx people are not the same. And while there are Latinx people who are white, if I recall correctly Yasmin's doll was more brown.
@breeisjustababy3 жыл бұрын
yeah all of the poc characters were played by either fully white or biracial actors, so they kinda fumbled the ball in terms of diversity. and the yasmin and sasha dolls were noticeably darker than their live action counterparts.

This movie version of Yasmin is a weird amalgamation/generalization of different Jewish and Hispanic ethnicities. Bubbie is yiddish for grandmother but that would mean Yasmin is part Ashkenazi instead of being fully Sephardic. They should have used the Hebrew or Ladino (Spanish+Hebrew) names for grandmother- Savta and Avuela. Nathalia Ramos is half-Spanish and half Jewish (not sure from where) and the actress who plays her grandmother is also half Ashkenazi and half Sephardic (Spain and Turkey).

Another friend of mine, Heather, (she had transitioned a few years prior and her family was super supportive) took the transitioning teen under her wing, with the help of Heather's supportive mom. The 3 of them went clothes shopping, but she still couldn't wear girls clothing or makeup in front of her conservative family.
