Wow. You just blew my mind with the teaching that short leash corrections make dogs see being close as a negative correction. I've been doing it wrong. And that explanation makes so much sense. I originally thought training on short leash was the way to go and then gradually graduate to a long leash.

.It's sooo hard to get people not to pull or yank the dogs, puppy or full grown. I have been guilty of it in the past. Great video as always. I have been training Dobermans and Rottwieilers since I was 16 yrs. old (I am almost 69 now) and I still learn little tricks watching your videos. BOB

Hi I really enjoy your videos. I especially like the fact that you provide a lot of narration. I am legally blind, with no vision in one eye and very little in the other. I plan to adopt a dog soon, this is not a guide dog, I am looking for a low drive companion dog because I am too old to tackle raising a puppy. I just listened to your lesson on the long line. I wonder how I can use one without tripping over the thing. I will adopt a dog from our local humane society, so I don’t yet know what training the dog will need. I have raised and trained some good pet dogs, but it has been many years ago. Thanks again

You have amazing training techniques. In addition to training with a local obedience school and my daily training reinforcements, your methods have helped tremendously. I have a 6 month old male (intact) Cane Corso. He has been with me since 8 wks of age. He is eager to learn and I love that about him. I LOVE the long lead method. It allows him to roam and when I step on it, it gets his attention back on me. Please share what treat that you use. I use mozzarella cheese sticks at the moment. I have turkey links that I haven't introduced him to. Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge. It has helped a great deal!

Your videos are very helpful with my new puppy. My question is about biting. When I try to train my 10 weeks old springer following this video of yours, she runs towards me, gets excited and starts jumping and biting my legs or whatever she can reach. The only way I know to stop this behavior is to make her sit and give reward every time she approaches me, or pick her up and take her to the pen or a crate. I hate to stop a training session because she is biting. I would greatly appreciate your advice on this issue! Thank you!

Another great video. I think I will start using this method. I am always looking for natural positive ways to teach dogs. How ever I think I will use a bit more vocal markers. I like talking a lot to any dog I teach. Studies have shown not only does is reduce the human stress level but it also has the same effect on the dog. More calmness you can bring into teaching the better. I am still working on the calm part with my Ruby. She is always wanting to be on the go and is soooooooo excitable. You can see her on my youtube channel.

Hi Robert. We got a Cocker/Lab mix, she's 10 weeks old right now, and we started training her by watching your videos. In just two weeks she already comes, sits, walks on a long line and waits for us to put her food down. Of course she sometimes ignores commands, she pulls on the leash and tries to eat things off the ground, but we're working on that too. I have no idea if starting her training this young is ok, I wanted to ask you if it's too young or we should wait a few more weeks. Thank you so much for all these amazing videos!

Thank you for this video! I've read that it's beneficial to keep a puppy on a leash, attached to my waist, inside while I'm doing chores around the house. So to call "the umbilical cord" training. Do you support this and if yes what is the length of the leash should be used for this? For how long should I do this?

its called tethering the dog. usually used to teach the dog to remain close but can be a problem to build separation anxiety. I would use a crate.

I just found your video and really like all your videos and your training style. Do you have anything that breaks down from day one with the puppy or a complete guide? I am getting a new puppy and although this is far from being the first dog I have ever had and trained, I want to get into specific sports and activities with her later so I want a very strong base. If I was local to you I would seek your services. Anything like I asked or do you know someone good in south Florida or a way to find one locally to me that’s not just a click/only food trainer. I originally learned from a k9 mil/le trainer who was too completely in the opposite direction and your balanced approach I like much better.

Great video extremely informative. Thank you. Our 13 week old border collie we have only had him for 8 days and he sits does down waits coming in and out of door. He is doing great. My question is crate training. We use 2 min crate time outs where he is put in without emotion or talking 2 min later he is let out always by person putting him in. We then go on as if nothing has happened. How do you ensure the crate becomes a positive place? We crate at night no problems there. But would like him to see crate as good not punishment. Do you suggest lunch in crate or special treat? Thanks.
@Arhan28
@Arhan28 6 жыл бұрын
I recently started doing the time outs by bringing my 11 month old pup in for 2 minute time outs via the collar. I noticed that she started to immediately pickup on that as a negative, biting the door and closing and opening the door and barking a bit to get out at night. My advice would be to get a pen and use it instead of the crate. Try to use that a bit more while they are smaller. Keep the crate for over night. Just my 2 cents.

@@alcy0ne1 harnesses encourage pulling. If you don't have a car crate, they can be a good seatbelt attachment (assuming you have the padded type).
@emdueck6250

I find the issue with dogs "hating" harnesses is because they sit right under the armpits - which are quite sensitive. That could be why your goldendoodle is so upset with it

I needed this. I was having some confusion with my new GSD mix. I haven't had a young puppy in a while and in hindsight it was irresponsible of me not to redo the research before bringing him home. My absolute worst habit is getting frustrated when we're walking and he stops to sniff something. I tend to pop the leash in my direction instead of persuading him to follow. Going to try my damndest to remember this wonderful advice. :)
