I feel like you guys are having an expectation problem. I absolutely loved this book because I came into it expecting lots of things to carry on to era 3. I'm honestly surprised how much did wrap up. Trell was pushed back and the set was defeated. Sure the Malwish and the basin politics are left for the future, but we have a future! There are at least 2 more trilogies about this stuff. The characters got great endings, that's what matters. The plot can be wrapped up later.

Chaos / Harmony was ineffective because of his difficulties maintaining the balance (this is also what allowed trell’s influence) also in the epilogue kel mentioned they were not actually balanced. Also….. based on the epilogue conversation I’m guessing that Kel and his new world order will put him squarely in the villain’s spot.

That moment where sazed gives the vision of himself at the gate was definitely the most powerful moment in the book for me

My problems with this book: 1. Continuity, 3d book focuses on bands of mourning and discovery of the southerners but then all of a sudden we're back to basin conflicts. 2. Deus ex machina (almost), while we've seen the dor and other magic systems in other series they came out of nowhere if you're a mistborn only reader, and I still cannot understand how marasi & the community were able to channel the investiture in the perpendiculary. 3. No villain, somehow I feel like there was no villain here, telsin was trying to save scadriel in her own misguided way, autonomy wasn't really set on anything as long as you "prove yourself" and the mayor was just scared too. 4. Wasted hoid, what exactly was hoid doing there, besides saving wax out of nowhere. That said I did love the book anyway, mainly for the two main characters Wax and Wayne especially Wayne RIP 😢

the liquid investiture pool was basically a tiny, artificial well of ascension. Same liquid investiture of the mists.

The big problems you have with this is that era 2 is a bridge series meant to explain why things are the way they are in era 3 and the conflicts brewing in the background the malwish weren't introduced until the third book and dealing with the conflicts between the basin and the southern continent in 1 and 1/2 books would be very unsatisfying and leave a bigger mess than brandon could've reasonably resolved here also it's iyatil's brother at the end i think the reason they on and off with codenames is because they want to be buddy buddy with marasi they want to entice her also the shadow was directly mentioned to be the ruin part of harmony because preservation weakened himself against ruin by breaking his deal with ruin so that aspect of him has an advantage against his preservation side

Basically ya. Like we said, I think it just comes down to this series growing out of a side project and not being his original plan

Why does every thread have to be completed in era 2? That seems like a personal wish but not a necessity for good writing.

Probably because otherwise we have to wait years for the next books and we aren't patient haha

@@FantologyPodcast I get it… but once we get to era 3, we would also complain that Brandon had a missed opportunity for not using the progressing eras to lead into each other. So let’s just enjoy story-telling!

What I’m getting at, is Lost Metal is as good of a book as any of Brandon’s best. It’s so heartfelt!!

I'm glad you liked it! I think our discussion here was not that every thread needed to be wrapped, but every thread should have some importance to the current story. The Malwish especially just did nothing of plot importance. Usually Sanderson books incorporate every element brilliantly, so that was a disappointment to us

You raise a fair qualification for reviewing fiction! “If this doesn’t matter to the book, why is it in the book?” You’re right, it is a fair question. I’m not sure I personally need that answer, because I’m okay with it being irrelevant to the current book while very important to future sequels. But it’s fair. SPOILER QUESTION: Isn’t the warmongering malwish general who received the bands of mourning the same one who was in league with the ghost bloods and is married to the malwish assassin on Roshar? I went through that part really quickly. If so, that is a significant, though mysterious, plot development. Because that means it was actually, seemingly, untrue that the Malwish were involved much in the Elendel’s situation-I.e., their heavy current involvement was a hoax by the ghost bloods to get the bands of mourning.

SPOILERS!!! Imho, it’s 100% shai. Sanderson said that a character from a novella in arcanum unbounded would show up in this book. Also, in Elantris, all vowels are long, so her name, still spelled shai, would be pronounced shay-I, which is what Marasi, the narrator of that section, heard because she didn’t see it spelled and didn’t know that quirk of their language. Also he did her reveal much as he did the reveal of azure’s true character in SA, setting it up with the same sorts of clues and a big insider info dump at the end to confirm what we all knew without making those who don’t know shai feel left out. By not saying “hi I’m shai, the protagonist of emperor’s soul,” she’s just as approachable to those who haven’t read it as was twinsoul to the rest of the fandom who hasn’t met the Aethers yet.

in the end sazed says that they did split atium and lerasium from harmonium and it shouldn't be possible. That has obvious relevance that, contrary to what Sazed believed, Ruin and Preservation are NOT inseperable from Harmony and that has major implications going forward. Maybe if they split enough harmonium to make new allomancers, the balance between Ruin/Preservation will tip to one side and that will change the intent into Discord and Sazed will eventually succumb to that intent.
@FantologyPodcast
@FantologyPodcast 2 жыл бұрын
Oh good point. So possibly the reason he's getting unbalanced is because of all the splitting that's happening

The whole politics didn't go any where argument is basically explained by the fact that Harmony has made everything to easy and that has stifled innovation

I like Wayne a lot, but I also didn't feel that gut wrenching feeling when he died. Like when I read teft's death, I feel it every time (I've only read it like 3 times). There were amazing moments that pulled me in the book, but Wayne's death isn't really one of those

You all seem like nice cool people, but this video was kinda horrible for lore. You guys didn’t even correctly remember what happened in the book THAT YOU JUST READ and you got a bunch of the theories wrong/missed them.(only noticed that after watching other videos of people who knew what they were talking about)

Aren't the politics leading to 0 changes an absolute obvious microcosm of the ridiculousness and useless nature of American political culture? To me it would feel very "happily ever after" if they actually made big changes Plus Steris gets a new job and Marasai Plus I feel like we will see the politics evolve and how they evolve throughout the Mistborn series. I assume at the end era 3 we will see clear lines to the place Scadtial is politically when Mistborn is over
