Mary Woods Lady Jennifer Bell Schofield invented the modern days hair straighteners in 1912. She based it on an invention by Erica Feldman who used a straightening contraption in 1872. She developed the idea from an early kind of hair straightener as used by Frenchman Marcel Grateau years earlier. Oh, and by the way all three were white

Yes, but if they DO...they'll have to tell the story in the "Good white folk" narrative that you can hear in the reporter's summation. "Oh, the good WHITE MAN paid ALL of his workers the same wage! Innit that just so WHITE of him...?". THAT'S the price we pay, just to get what we DESERVE! Just like the families of black men shot unarmed by white cops have to be SILENT after they receive their little PENNIES from the state who MURDERED their children! They actually put GAG orders on them, so that they can't speak on how EVIL this system is! Yet, they gave the family of the WHITE woman shot in Minneapolis, like THREE TIMES what they give BLACK families, AND they convicted the BLACK cop who accidentally shot her! So this is the how different the treatment is when you're black! Smfh.

madboyreadynow28 exactly! The fact that they have come make up a scholarship or whatever to help compensate Green’s descendants for his part of the company’s success is very sneaky & deceitful. Why not give them a lump sum of money & call it a day? This news story makes JD out to be this racial pioneer when in fact he took a man’s intellectual property & never compensated him properly. Oh let no one fool you. Black people have contributed a lot to America but were never given credit. White people have stolen for their wealth but they pretend they did it all on their own which is BS. Lewis :Latimer a Black inventor invented a more practical light bulb for which he received a patent but Thomas Edison is always given credit. Latimer also worked for Edison and Alexander Graham Bell (telephone inventor?) as a draftsman which means Latimer did the schematic drawings for Bell's phone and some of Edison's "work" to apply for patents. Now think if Bell invented the phone, why would he need Latimer or anyone else to draw his schematics. He wouldn't! if it's your idea, how can I draw your designs! I can't! they are in your head not mine. An architect designs a building from beginning to end but lets say he had the idea but couldn't do the drawings. That makes no sense!

I don't think I would call Jack Daniel a thief or a crook. At the end of the day, Nearest Green was an employee, and was actually paid the same wage as white employees. That in itself says a lot about Jack. If you work for Ford, you don't get your name on a car. If you work for Ben & Jerry's and create a new flavor, it's highly unlikely that it will be named after you. But, I do think this man should have been mentioned in Jack's biography. I will remember the name Nearest Green, and I'll pour a little liquor out in his memory next time I drink.

The Whiskey would still have been made by JDs distillery - it may have just had a different recipe. It might have been better - it might have been worse - or the recipe may have been Jacks all along and Greene helped with some other process. To suggest there would be no whiskey just because an potential employee didn't want to work there is silly. You get someone else.

Everything great thing made, invented, built was done by black folks. Caucasians the take it and slap a white face and white name on it and remove all traces of black involvement. Didn’t know previously that black architects, builders, labourers built the White House. Yet they slapped the name “White House” on it and removed every evidence or trace of black involvement. Ford Motors production lines was invented by a black man. So many more. It’s crazy to see how other folks have snatched the credit and royalties and scrubbed off black involvement.

His credit came in the form of a paycheck. You have to understand how business works. Someone owns a company and pays the workers to do the work. You agree to do the work in exchange for a paycheck. The owner of the company agrees to pay you a paycheck so that he or she can have that product to claim and sell.

Did you know that Thomas Edison took Grandville T. Woods to court more than once over a patent ( inductor telegraph) and each time ( it is believed six times, Edison was considered a bully back in the day) Thomas Edison lost due to the fact thatt he could not reproduce the invention he claimed he invented. Edison offered to make Grandville T. Woods his partner. Woods declined the offer. Later, Woods , due to the fact that African Americans did not have the same advantages and opportunities that white inventors , he would sell his patent to Edison. Edison stole ideas hounded competitors in court such as Grandville T. Woods and floated hostile rumors about inventions better than his own. You be the judge. I believe that if these truths as stated above are made mandatory to be taught in all schools across America that people will look at racism and ra ist ideology differently. What do you think?

It is unfortunate that many people just assume that every single white person hated every person of color in those days. There were probably many friendships and relationships that have been forgotten over time. That is why it is so great to have family and friends to pass down stories and memories to. Imagine if Nathan didn't have any kids. We may have never discovered his part in the Jack Daniels story.

Sable Willis No, why would they? They paid Nathan handsomely and he became very wealthy plus they've paid all his ancestors who have worked for JD Co since. The Rev. Daniel Call (who taught Green) was told by his parishioners either leave the company or leave the parish because they were against alcohol. Call taught Green Green taught Daniels Daniels bought the company (including the recipe). Daniels made Green his head brewer and very wealthy The two became lifelong friends and now people are trying to spoil all that after watching one short KZbin video

Sable. Don't rely on the comments you see here. Not one of them has done a shred of research on the subject. Some things you just don't say out loud or put into a documentary because now everyone says they are the cousin of a cousin and they want there cut. Of course there has been compensation for this. Trust but verify. Always remember that. Even me.

If it were true, then wouldn't you think the descendant of this man after all these years would have told the story? It someone else to research this information (and for what good reason) to bring this information the the light. But I guess they know people believe whatever the T.V. says is true. Who knows it just may be a way to hike up their sales.
