I recall something else that should probably get an honorable mention. It was years ago, so I don't recall the source, but I remember reading an account of a group of Maquis, along with (I think) SAS soldiers and an OSS agent, shooting down a Focke-Wulf fw 190 with a Bren. I wish I could tell you the source, but it's been too long and I think that it was a library book rather than one that I own.

You aren't really American until you go to the true American church AKA the gun range. True story, I dated a pretty Vietnamese lady for a time when we were both running track & field in college at the University of New Mexico. On a Weird Date Night arranged by UNM Student Government we went to a gun range together. She shot a small handgun, a .22, for the first time in her life. She shot WAY better than I did, & I'd been shooting since I was 8. By the end of the date she was shooting .45 ACP & she didn't want to leave 😭. Today she is an ISSF competition shooting coach in Vietnam, & she is the first woman to owner-operate a gun range & a womens' semi-professional shooting & self-defense club in Vietnam. She married a Vietnamese pentathlete after they met in Hanoi at a pentathlon. They were mutually impressed at each other's shooting abilities 😍😍.

I’d only known the name Enterprise from Star Trek, and I’m not even a Trekkie. I’d discovered that name from the show. Imagine my shock while watching Battle: 360 that this legendary ship survived as much as she did. But Animarchy’s essay on The Grey Ghost, truly made me proud to be an American. To know the legendary Enterprise was American, and all she’d done, and sacrificed for our freedoms. How much she was loved by her crew. Probably one of the most entertaining and knowledgeable videos I’ve seen on history. Made me realize why she was/is a legend, and her being op and as badass as she is in Azur Lane and Wow, isn’t just exaggeration.

Ok, no shit. That second story with the Storch. I thought it was going to be the story of my Friends dad who brought down a Fieseler with his pistol whilst in his LN-2. However, He didn't shoot it down. Rather he brandished his Big Iron and the Germans surrendered. This was in '45 and these guys were looking to surrender to any American they could. So, they surrendered to Lt. O'Leary. His son James showed me the photo of his dad accepting the Germans surrender after they landed. As a result, We recreated this pose at an air show in Reading PA. James in place of his dad.

I got him while sitting in an Airco DH2 and he got so mad that he ragequitted, rejoined to flame, disconnected again , came back online ,joined my team and then tried to teamkill me for the rest if the evening. Ok boys and girls, open your hymn books to the Marty Robbins chapter and sing along: To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip For the stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip It was early in the morning when he rode into the town He came riding from the south side slowly lookin' all around He's an outlaw loose and running, came the whisper from each lip And he's here to do some business with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead He was vicious and a killer though a youth of 24 And the notches on his pistol numbered one and 19 more One and 19 more Now the stranger started talking, made it plain to folks around Was an Arizona ranger, wouldn't be too long in town He came here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead And he said it didn't matter he was after Texas Red After Texas Red Wasn't long before the story was relayed to Texas Red But the outlaw didn't worry men that tried before were dead 20 men had tried to take him, 20 men had made a slip 21 would be the ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip The morning passed so quickly, it was time for them to meet It was 20 past 11 when they walked out in the street Folks were watching from the windows, everybody held their breath They knew this handsome ranger was about to meet his death About to meet his death There was 40 feet between them when they stopped to make their play And the swiftness of the ranger is still talked about today Texas Red had not cleared leather 'fore a bullet fairly ripped And the ranger's aim was deadly with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip It was over in a moment and the folks had gathered round There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground Oh, he might have went on living but he made one fatal slip When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip Big iron, big iron When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip

It’s actually kind of interesting. Weaboos romanticize Samurai and Ninja, while Westaboos romanticize Cowboys/Gunslingers, and Gangsters from the roaring 20s. But when you get down to it, the history of these figures is much deeper. Including the weapons they both use. The Thompson, M1911, katana, ninja stars, Colt pistols, all have many stories that define their history. It’s really interesting how much Japan and America borrow from each other. Inspiring each other, while that curiosity inspires both to visit each other’s country. Some foreign tourists, I’ve seen from videos, are even shocked with American guns. With how different they can be.

I found Flyboy to be an entertaining movie, even if it had moments that were... _less than plausible..._ "Yes. We shall have an aircraft somehow crash land into No Man's Land in such a way that leaves the pilot pinned but mostly uninjured. Then have ANOTHER pilot come out of f--king nowhere to help him, only he can't move wood and cloth (for some reason?). We then have a French soldier cross into No Man's Land to help them, only for that Frenchman to _immediately die_ so that we can give the character access to a shovel to amputate his buddy's hand to save him. Oh, and then have the plane f--king explode afterwards, just for good measure!"

My wife is an American born Czech/Irish girl, so when we went to the Czech Republic to visit her family there after we got married, they nicknamed me "Cowboy" since I wear my ropers everywhere (as they keep my feet dry when it rains) and was born and raised in Texas, as was my wife. They really went far and above to make me feel welcomed and part of the family, especially catering to my dietary needs as I have Crohn's Disease. We married in 2016 and visited in 2018, and to this day they call me "Cowboy" rather than my first name.

Flyboys is a very entertaining adventure film. In Czech it has a very naive sounding dub and the title "Knights of the Sky". The Red Baron film from the same era is boring, but at least a bit more accurate. It's a shame that for a hood WWI air combat film you have to go far into 20th century. With all their technical limitations.

The ineffectiveness of pistols in areial combat had far less to do with their size and the inherent shitiness of their aircraft especially in the case of something like the 1911 and far more to do with things like the fact that they used conical bullets which were already more affected by things like wind and gravity compounded by the low pressure and velocity nature of pistols meant the range was terrible, accuracy abysmal. Essentially there were to many forces acting on the bullet so even if you shot it perpendicular to yourself at a target going parallel to you at the same speed there were far too many forces acting on that bullet to achieve much of anything and thats ignoring the pitiful capacity and rate of fire. So while I agree they were poor for arriel combat the reasons why are different.

Real missed opportunity to not play Proud to be an American when telling the story of the air to air drive by shooting. Only proper use of that song ever

...."The best Westerns ever made..." I am genuinely asking this and I don't mean this as offense, other countries make westerns?!?!

The best westerns were made in Italy! Spaghetti Westerns. Many of Clint Eastwoods greatest movies were directed by an Italian director Sergio Leone. The most famous being “The Good the Bad and The Ugly”

Flyboys took place in a time before the US entered the war when the Americans in the Lafayette Escadrille were flying Nieuport 11. Its a crap movie, but them not flying Spads isn't one of the reasons.

@AnimarchyHistory Yes they did, but later. I believe the movie takes place at the very start of American volunteer engagement. This is off the top of my head, though. I'm willing to be instructed if I got it wrong.

@@JimmyTwitcher At the end of the movie the US joins the war. So I am 99% sure it starts in the latter half of 1916. Which means they definitely had Spad VII's available to them.

Not to burst any raid fans bubble, but Warthunder Mobile has much better graphics. The tanks are incredibly good and so is the terain and props. Just don’t coment about the map size.
