Sheogorath is probably my favorite daedric prince. Most modern fiction depicts trickster gods as evil or tyrannical, however, I don't believe this has to be the case. Sheogorath provides a place and a purpose for the mentally ill who would normally be outcast and shunned from society. He inspires art and creativity. He doesn't believe in predetermination, unlike his counterpart. His Skyrim quest has you treating the madness of Pelagius III, like a therapist would a patient. He always holds up his end of the bargain, and his artifact is pretty damn useful. And he has some of the most quotable lines in Elder Scrolls. (Yes, Hircine is my second. )

You could look at it that way yes... But I'd like to remind you... this is still... well... a demon. The prince that inspires creativity is also the same demon that literally ripped an innocent woman apart to make instruments. The prince that gives a home for the mentally ill is also the same demon that tricked Malacath into killing a noble orc who's only fault was accepting a cursed sword from Sheo and then Sheo dragged the orc into his own realm to be tortured, having done all of this for simply no reason whatsoever. Just because this viper can hide his fangs doesn't mean he has no venom...

Sheogorath is my favourite Prince because he's such a complex and amazing character. His sphere is madness/mental illness, and I think it's really interesting to see how he views madness. In Skyrim, you cure Pelagius of his madness, but when your dialog says you "fixed" him, Sheogorath actually corrects you on your viewpoint. Plus, he considers sanity boring, but encouraged the Dragonborn to bring one of the more famously mad people back to it. In Oblivion, I think you do also see his Dementia side. For one, you take the journey to become him, and there are times where you can be ironic or just plain cruel simply by player choice (for example, the quest Baiting the Trap, which is considered to have traditions). You also work with the Duke and Duchess, and the Duchess assassinates and tortures people. Relmyna, too, tortures people for "tests", and the Gatekeeper was built in conjunction with Sheogorath too. etc etc, the point is that in Oblivion, as you are taking up his mantle, YOU exhibit both sides just as much as he can. Unfortunately, and sometimes annoyingly enough, he's popular for his little humorous quips, but I think it's also noteworthy about his viewpoint on the concept of time, and the fact he does not abide by it, nor the rules even other Daedric Princes do (such as summoning days, where followers are not to invoke a Prince on a day dedicated to another). He literally invented music, too. He's by far one of the most interesting characters in The Elder Scrolls, and there's just so much about him and his lore that so fascinating. He's one of those characters that seem simply ~lol crazy~ but is super intelligent. I could go on all day, tbh.

Old Sheo is a welcoming sight, standing as a subversion of the dichotomy of Chaos/Order, instead of order being seen as good, you see it as controlling; I love the idea of taking a supposed 'bad' thing and turning it bad, an example, making light the 'evil' and dark the 'good.'
@nightshadedreams29896 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth...you my friend, have summed up exactly on how I think about him, granted, I did enjoy his little joke speeches, but after delving more into his realm and personality, I see him more, I guess unique? He is the perfect example of 'never judge a book by its cover' and that world is not so back and white. He is so much more than what we give him credit for.
@ancalagonaidoni74255 жыл бұрын
You know when Sheogorath says "Time is an artificial construct?" He was still Sheo and not Jyggalag, and I think that was his lowest point, when he was deepest in Dementia. Even to the end, he defied Jyggalag's Order by employing the darkest aspect of his madness.

He's always a highlight of the game he's featured in and guaranteed to be fun.

As a bit of a personal theory, I think part of Sheogorath's actions are born of seeing US (as in the people of Tamriel) as the 'truly' crazy ones. Why does his world have nobility? His duality is made more interesting by the names he goes by. Sheogorath is a rather menacing name, if you ask me; Jyggalag sounds more like the name of a clown by comparison. Perhaps the historical account was intentionally twisted by the Daedra as another aspect of their curse. Also, if Jyggalag knows future events and believes in determinism, he would have known he would be cursed to sow chaos and accepted it as part of his purpose as well. ...alternatively, maybe the whole thing is flipped and his account of the Daedric curse is twisted by his inherent insanity. He was always crazy and he's not 'allowed to turn into Jyggalag' once per age but forced to believe in order and determinism when in that form and cursed to always believe that his current form is against his true nature and purpose no matter what form he takes. I don't know. Maybe I'm just crazy.

There might be small chance that the roles reverse in some instances but that doesn't mean the chances are equal.

I think the book with the story about how Sheogorath "gave men the gift of music" is the perfect representation of him. He saw a woman walking in the woods while the birds were chirping and thought how it was a shame that men could not make the same wondrous sounds. So he dismembered the woman and fashioned instruments from her bones and skin and gave them to men so that they could make music.

I found the shivering isles preferable to the mortal world . It seems like Tamriel is always in crisis mode. Sometimes an escape from reality is necessary.
@MrSailing1014 жыл бұрын
That opening monologue was actually an accurate description of one of the theories of the nature of the setting, that reality is a test for mortals to escape from via personal apotheosis and transcendence. Like Vivec and the tribunal came close to. Notably, Vivec earned Sheogorath's ire specifically, almost like he came close to the answer, but failed at the last step. For the underprepaired, reading an Elder scroll causes blindness and insanity. Insanity IS Sheogorath, and in Skyrim, the Prince appears with blank white eyes associated with blindness. During Oblivion, the Champion/Player character/Sheogorath II is told that they would be the one to write the next Elder Scroll. Sheogorath is described as a Sithis shaped hole in the world. Sithis is true nothingness, primordial chaos and the ultimate force of change. Sheogogorath does not exist unless someone takes up the mantle of madness, is the most chaotic prince, and always seems to disrupt the status quo. In short, Sheogorath's true goal is to drive mortals to understand the true nature of reality, and transcend it.

While I wouldn't put it past Potema to be capable of something like that, Elder Scrolls lore cn be ambiguous sometimes, for the opposite reason as Dark Souls lore. There are so MANY books and tomes on TES lore that you can't pin down any one thng as truth without something else coming along to contradict it. It's madness!...but such good madness. The second best kind.

When I played the Shivering Isles, the hero of Kvatch was a female Altmer and way better looking. Some people say, Sheogorath has just assumed his old form -- but that can't be true. I'm still not convinced that Jyggalag existed at all. I think the whole shivering isles dlc was Sheogoraths attempt to make the Hero of Kvatch believe he was the Mad God thus driving him/her mad. Think about it: Jyggalag hasn't been mentioned ANYWHERE, no books, no lore, nothing either before nor after the Shivering Isles, despite supposedly being so powerful he almost conquered oblivion and all the other princes' spheres. If the princes' really cursed Jyggalag into Sheogorath, there is no way they would let him trick them as many times as he has according to the lore that actually exists. Also, whenever Sheo has dealt with mortals his goals has always been the same; driving them mad. Sure he usually does it by not doing anything, it seems to be his favorite method, but that is why noone suspects him of his other aspect, the God of Creativity, who definitely would be crazy enough to change his whole realm into a questing-ground for a pompous fool who believes him/herself to be the master of his/her own fate. In conclusion: Sheogorath trolled everyone to oblivion. Literally.

Hes mentioned in the Book of Daedra which was written in the 1st era I believe. Also: Skyrim Sheo summarizes the HoK's actions, and then "a title passed to me to myself every few thousand years or so." He references the curse and greymarch quite a bit

So basically, anyone who plays video games or reads a book or a novel or does/watches anything remotely artistic or for entertainment is susceptible to the influence of Sheogorath, because all those represent a form of escapism, pretty much everything we do in modern society is a form of escape from reality, so, in that sense, Sheogorath has a way bigger influence than we might think. I guess it would make sense with that one tale which describes a legend about how Sheogorath supposedly invented music.

@Stryker12975 жыл бұрын
as much as i'm with you, the aedra are harder to make videos on, for several reasons. for starters they very rarely deal with mortals, unlike the deadra. so while we know what they each represent, we don't understand their patterns of behavior for the sake of analysis. If i'm not mistaken, the only instance of a divine communicating directly with someone is Akatosh in (i believe) Oblivion. having said that, I'd fucking love an akatosh vid.

If Sheogorath can outsmart other Daedric Princes, then he'd have no trouble with mortals. I think to put it simply, Sheogorath being the Daedric Prince of Madness would imply a split personality so wouldn't that be a reason for the personality changes as well?

So, the nereverine is immortal. The hero of Kvatch (aka sheogorath) is, well, a daedra. The dragonborn is likely stuck in apocrypha. That means that all the main characters from elder scrolls 3, 4, 5, and 6 will all be alive at the same time (assuming elder scrolls 6 will take place after skyrim). I would love to see them all interact in a future game, that would be beautiful.
