The healing challenge was amazing, combined almost every aspect of being a healer nowadays. Felt great completing it, amazing content imo. There should be a whole tower full of these types of challenges with a leaderboard, and you progress through the levels by completing the prior one.

I can agree that the tanking challenges were quite interesting and satisfying, though I still need to level up a monk and do the brewmaster one. Particularly enjoyed Prot pally and Blood DK to be honest. As for DPS challenges until now, feral was actually pretty enjoyable, though Luffa's trivialized to challenge a lot, Frost DK wasn't that bad, though I overgeared it quite a bit. Survival hunter, while somewhat undergeared and with a single legendary (Marksman belt) was fairly challenging but felt doable. On the pathetically boring side of the challenges I'll put Ret, Assassination, Balance and even Marksmanship, all done with about 905 prior to 7.3. As of right now sitting at 22 challenges completed.

Yeah, I did it at a similar iLvl with no legendaries on my Warlock at the time as well. Sure, the way I did it is in no means an obvious solution to someone like Mike who wanted to do them without guides, but looking up a guide completely trivialised the fight for Warlocks to the point where no legendary was needed, or over gearing it either.

Say whatever you want about DH and its fel rush and double jump, back with 905 gear I had it was no joke to do Xylem. First of all, as a DH he has 160M hp and not 110 like with other specs which means you have to do roughly 48M more damage which isn't THAT easy because Demonic build is completely mandatory otherwise you're dead, you just cannot mitigate or sustain his Arcane nuke spell. Demonic is also fulltime aoe/cleave spec and it's single target is pathetic. Also the 2nd illusion phase is really tilting and it took me around 20 wipes just to get past that. On the other hand I did frost mage in like 8 attempts with Norgannon and Mage ring (both completely shit for frost, neither utility nor output) since its a fresh alt. It's probably all subjective but people are so quick to say DHs have it easy when in reality, anyone who mains havoc agrees that the double jump and fel rush is convenience at best when it comes to this scenario.

Well on my main (BM hunter) i got there when it was first available and couldn't do it due to bugs mostly (I had the heal on FD helm and even if the pet was tanking it would despawn the boss half the time that i used FD). So i didn't bother for a while. Then i got the legendary healing pants, went in there and did it with almost no problems since now my healing was no longer an issue. So yeah, the tower was a good idea but very poorly implemented. Now, if you want something that did work, check MoP-WoD proving grounds. Whenever ilvl is scaled to be the same for everyone then things work much better.

You do understand that it did not work for everyone since it was pain in butt for classes who needed gear to work properly? Boomkins, fire mages, fury warriors etc which heavily depended on a secondary stat.

The tank challenge was overloaded with tuning issues when it first came out. It was essentially impossible for Paladins on release and BDKs were close behind (It was before the massive 15% damage buff they got). Guardians have a weird relationship with the tank challenge because on release it was the easiest due to the bugs and Mark of Ursol but now with those either fixed or removed it's gotten more difficult over time.

MoU removal was way later in big patch, it was overgear-fest by the time MoU was gone, and way easier even without it, that spell is not a must-have for the challenge like people may think.

There is no playlist however, or a few of the specs which Mike has done before doing the TDP video series (such as frost mage, and DH). He does have the arcane and fire kills on the 'how to run a guild' video, in the background.

@preach I think a lack of familiarity with the lock hurt you on the Aff challenge. Once I discovered that the infernal can tank Karam indefinitely and that a correctly timed MC can interrupt his first regen cast, I managed it easily on my 900~ lock with shitty leggos. The worst part was as you said just standing there till Karam hit his trigger HP and monstering Raest.

The bug is kind of fixed from what I noticed. My internal was taking for the 1st phase of my first try. Other than that, it wasn't tanking at all. I kind of decided to just wait until I get that legendary ring, but I might be geared enough to do it now.

It's not fixed, I did it a week ago and both the internal tanking and coil interrupt works as long as you know how to do it. Very cheesy way to do it, but honestly the whole encounter is stupidly overtuned for anyone who doesn't have Sacro and I'm not going to grind tons of legendaries just because I want a fancy scythe on my alt.

Luffa is not the only leggie there. if you have Eko it's basically the same as luffa, since it gives you that comfortable range of thrashing outside the pool. but it is a pain in the ass without either of those two leggies, this is true. completed mine with luffa on 908 ilvl 45 traits in just 50 tries. without Luffa would be much higher number of attempts.

I had the Eko (loot spec set to Balance), but it's not nearly the same. Luffa Wrappings also give you a ton of damage.

yea it's a dps race, but the whole "difficult" part is that you have to shimmy half-way into the pool without getting stacks so you have enough range to thrash. Eko removes it the same as luffa. so you can concentrate on other multi-tasking stuff without this major annoyance. if you do the mechanics right, luffa or not, the damage is plenty even on low ilvls.

As someone who's now done 19/36 of the specs, and every challenge at least once, I'd have to completely agree with what Preach is saying. I'd also like to add that the mage tower doesnt directly correlate to how good you are at the game/your spec, but more how good you are at that particular challenge. Once you've done the tank challenge on three different specs, you know that challenge by heart and you can somewhat easily defeat it on other specs, even if you dont have mastery over these particular specs, because you have mastery over that particular challenge. That being said, being good at your spec will certainly make the challenge easier. Overall I love the mage tower, almost all of the difficult content in this game is group content, and having a solo challenge is refreshing and interesting. I'd love to see more in the future, maybe with gear scaled in a similar way that the Chromie scenario is done. Great video Preach, fantastic insight on all the challenges and the pros and cons of their design. Keep it up!

did it without loofas wasn't a big issue though i had the healing boots and the healing+dmg on arcane/nature cape so it was still relatively easy...got loofas the day after i completed it (and completed the feral one earlier than guardian one so...)... that said i m really struggling with the prot warrior getting reckt by mind rend is not something i m used to seeing i first completed the monk one then the druid one so yeah i know the fight i know what i have to do but still i m getting my ass kicked

alex guigui I'm sure you know most of this already, but if you're still having trouble with it like I did, it's still a similar matter of out healing a bit by using the nether horrors and eyes for victory rush. Depending on your gear, you'll find 6-7 decay is where you'll want it. However, felt I cheesed it mostly by using lavish feast in dps for str boosts instead of stam and along prepotting, jus my opinion since I downed it in 3 runs after starting that.As usual cram prolonged pot and drums on kruul. Whether you find it useful or not, I wish you luck.

Man, I wiped so much lol, probably over 100 times until I downed it with good use of consumables for the dps check. There a lot of things to spam in the warrior fight, so here's some more tips I didn't add before for brevity. Use your spell reflect after you take a some stacks of psytalons to melt nether horrors, that's how you take care of them easily in both phases, the more stacks the more damage you reflect. Spell reflect doesnt do anything against mind rend. Anger management with Prot belt is a God send. You can spam battle cry and and demoralizing shout(with booming voice)which increases rage gen from the artifact passive. Anger management will likely also let you use major cds more than once if you need to as you spam out ignore pain and occasionally use revenge without procs. A lot of it becomes personal discretion as you judge whether you can take damage from one mechanic without dying to another. I went in with random gear and the belt/sephuz, but obviously we have the luxury of antorus lfr for even easier gear now, if we don't want to do M+ or actual raids. Oh, devastator is also a good rage generating talent that frees up a button, and shockwave can be used to stun Varis if you don't want to get more decay, and is great to cleave down nethers after your spell reflect fades. If you decided to read this, hope it helped man. Just finished up my monk challenges this round, so I know you can do it!

I did the guardian druid challenge with 911 ilvl or so with Cinidaria and Soul, and I don't really feel like it was that hard. I was using Balance Affinity and making the first boss fail most of his casts via slightly outranging then running back in so he wouldn't move too much. I got my Fury appearance after about 25 - 30 Attempts, At around 915 with a 4set, CoF, Glaives and a combo of Helm/Seph (pre crucible) for around 15 attempts at which point I swapped Seph for Prydaz.. There was no way I was completing that without Prydaz, the healing that Fury puts out is so trivial when both defensive CDs are unavailable. That said, I was missing my Legs and Belt which I feel if I had either of those my damage output would've been enough to blow through alot of the Mechanics.

Having hunter who owns Rhok'delar, I was super excited for these, thinking that it would have something to do with my class. I was 100% not impressed with them in the slightest. It doesn't help that the only weapon appearances I actually like are for classes I have as alts, but not geared enough to even bother trying (bear, kitty), or for specs that I barely know how to play (affloc) and probably don't stand a chance until I can completely overgear them and faceroll it.

From the ones I did i found fury by far the easiest one (first day, second attempt) - But then again, i had all legendaries at the time and especially in the fury one theyre really important, WW belt and healing bracers just trivialize it. If you didnt have bracers or prydaz it was *basically* impossible.

My experience on Mage and Monk: Arcane and Fire Mage were "medium", with Arcane being slightly harder due to Blink bugs and the Valkyrie dive attack looking like it's going somewhere else. Frost was very "hard" for me, also due to void zone RNG and low ilvl at that time (~900). MW monk was extremely hard, because I didn't have sephuz nor Prydaz. WW was a complete joke.

I haven't started doing them after I've completed Retri after killing KJ normal or heroic, can't remember which one. I got it after a incredibly frustrating weekend and now I'm done with Retri completely ALL THIS WEEKEND, and also got some other stuff. I want to complete DH and get the tank druid at least... I don't have the other chars equipped and no leggies on most... so... Fuck that. But I'll see how many I can do. I really did NOT enjoy the oneshot mechanics in the tank challenge. I can keep myself alive and use my CDs wisely, I've proven that in the heal challenge (never played heal pally before that, and had bad leggies for it), but I cannot stand having to move in and out of the boss while the boss is active. Nowhere in Antorus do I need to LEAVE THE BOSS ALONE while it is still cleaving into my group. I hate that. So either give me no smash or no aura... There was just ONE THING too much for me. Especially with the vengeance demon hunter... So hard. Got it now... Still.

I did most of these as current content and did affli,Mage,and arms on 22.06.18 what i got from them. I just Coiled the Affliction one and did it in 3 attempts...Cheese boiz Blood DK wasn't fun since i was a 945 when i did it and i was unkillable. Frost DK was too easy since i was a 939 and it was cheesable. Fire Mage was also easy with a 905. Guardian Druid was my bane , was a 910 when i did it , took me 20+ attempts. Resto Druid was also a 30+ attemps as an 880 , did it on day one and it was ultra hard for that gear, at one point i thought its impossible for an 880. Havoc was also really easy to do as a 919 Prot Paladin...no comment, I still don't have it, as a 911 with shitty Leggos it was just too annoying. Prot Warrior i don't have it aswell , tried twice and died on last phase as a 903 Arms warrior was easy as a 910 , that challenge is just simple and bland. Thats all i've done, Ill do unholy DK next and ill be done... Good luck everyone.

I kind of not agree with FrostDK beeing medium, it was extremly easy when you ran the Machine Gun-Build with Frostscythe and not BoS. I had Blood-Legendaries and Stats all over the Place. Just Frostscythe the Iceshards down. (No targeting needed) Then you save your AMS for the Mirror-Image Phase and thats it.

Yea Destro Magetower is a joke..Did it first Time we had mage tower on the 4th try. It was easy but a cool challenge anyway with you know Interrupting, CC etc. Hardest for me was Affliction. Did it 2 Days ago finally, without the Ring, somehow P1 was the hardest thing for me xD. Guardian Druid was the most disappointing one..i think i had 10 trys..killed it on the 11th when i equipped the Heirloom trinket...love the idea behind the Magetower nonetheless.

You know, at the time I hated the tank challenge, but what you've said makes sense. I guess what bothered me more was two-fold: 1) How the timers act like CDs, much like Avatar, but with some slush room; the problem is how large that slush room is (as an example, for my kill, his CDs were all pushed back so far that he only hit me with 3 Annihilates instead of the usually 5, which is a crazy difference in time and I didn't even have to use my Guardian of Ancient Kings). 2) How much your gear and itemization for dps could trivialize the challenge. If you stacked enough of your CDs, you could just negate problems, which is absurd (being able to push Variss with

I did the 3 Warlock challenges between 870 and 880 ilvl and they were... silly is probably the best description. For Affliction it really felt like something was missing. We used to have utility that would have helped but Blizz took it away and made a legendary to replace it which made that challenge extremely difficult without either that legendary or a ton of gear. I had it and even with it I had to keep Burning Rush on 100% of the time and because of that I had to talent into as much instant cast damage as I could. Just the fact that the spec doesn’t have either the control or survivability to make it through that challenge without gear feels really bad. Since I had the slow ring it was kinda fun, at times there were runes I couldn’t get because adds were on it but I could Banish the big add that spawned and then had to maintain that for the rest of the fight, that was neat. Demo’s challenge (Sigryn) was really weird. My gear for Demo was the worst of my 3 specs and I had a hard time just surviving even with Prydaz which was really awkward, I ended up chaining Fear on one of the enemies for just about the entire fight until eventually the three of them just stopped using abilities. I guess they’re only scripted to go so far and my dps was bad enough due to low gear in addition to ccing like a madman I passed that point lol. Destruction also felt off because it was largely an interrupt challenge but it felt like the timing was designed for melee. Even with Mortal Coil as a backup interrupt I still had to use Fear at times when both Spell Lock and Coil were on cd, and unless you were ON POINT and also didn’t have to move or anything it just took too long to cast. For all 3 Warlock challenges I ended up feeling like I didn’t quite have enough tools to deal with the mechanics at times and even though Blizz has been pushing the idea of Warlocks being tanky it’s never really enough to make up for a missed mechanic or lost mobility (same story in raids) which just leads to a really weak feeling, sloppily-designed class. I’ve only done the Warlock challenges though so I can’t speak for other classes, maybe it’s just the challenges that aren’t designed very well since they each cover multiple specs.

the affliction one I tried on day one, without the corruption slow ring, and around 895 ilvl, I got demolished to say the least and was like f this after 3 attempts. I retried it a few weeks ago with 941, and the slow ring, and one-shot it in 1½ minute with a dps of over 2m at the end, without hitting anything but the 2 bosses, and due to my 5,4m hp and 1m absorb, and my 1-1,8m drainsoul heal ticks, i could even ignore the hands... I was just baffled at the difference xD

They just need to put the time into making a "mage tower" system for each individual spec. Not necessarily different encounters, but change the mechanics in a more noticeable way to fit the class/spec you're doing it with. For instance, I never play DK, but I one-shot Agatha with no difficulty whatsoever, but it's really difficult for my rogue. The class and legendary imbalance just ruined most towers for me, even though I love the idea and hope they continue with this sort of thing in the future.

I found the affliction warlock to be very simple if you use fear and death coil in two parts of the fight when the melee mob is trying to heal. DPS Challenges do require CC if you do not have the DPS for the challenge, as shown in the twins encounter for affliction warlock. I was higher geared than most people trying it when it first came out (913) but I waited until the melee mob got to 33% and then cast fear on him. He stays at 33% health and the boss does not go immune. The transition between the normal stage 2 & 3 the melee mob will attempt to heal up again. This part of the fight you need the talent death coil to stop his healing. If you can fear the first immune and death coil the second immune you will beat the twins encounter with a low geared affliction warlock.

Absolute Corruption talent and Ring neutered the challenge for Affliction. Everything perma slowed by 60% was too strong in the attrition talent build.

World 7 tank challenge is comptetely different from the encounter you completed preach. His experience was more challenging even with more optimization. For example less infernals and a 50% nerf to Variss' health for protadins means much more than some legos.

I cannot only disagree with the ret paladin one. Did it on the first or second day the mage tower came out so i do not know if any changes has been made though. From the video i can see that they have changed the rate at which the runes shrink. back when it first came out, if you were not in the middle, and did not take the smallest one first, you were dead on the spot, when ret has no mobility when horse is on cooldown. I am/was a high end dps raider with good gear at the time, but that shield still almost popped a lot of the times. it came down to RNG whether or not valkyrs would line up. Also the damage coming out was no joke (especially with the axes not having a set fly pattern but changing on a whim), and i found myself having to find a moment of rest to actually get a cast off. The overlap was the most horrible thing, i do not exactly remember what went off, but as i remember you had whirlwind, sigryn's rage and something else going on, causing you to have to either take some ww damage or sigryn's rage tick, which would result in death if you were not above half health. I will however agree that after that the fight was very easy, and it only took 2 tries when getting over that overlap, to actually kill it. Now the question of difficulty very much depends on why you think something is difficult. Is it mechanlically difficult, meaning it takes high skill to execute, or is it more numerically difficult, meaning you need more gear. The thing with the ret challenge is that you cannot outgear it (unless they changed the numbers), cause it is filled with one shots. gear can trivialize the shield and general damage taken though. I unfortunately have only done 2 challenges, ret and arms, and there is a clear difference in difficulty scaled with gear. I do not remember my ilvl when the mage tower came out, but my warrior was 935 when i did the challenge with him, and it took 2 tries (only died on first cause i accidentally interrupted the 2nd boss). As for the others i have only seen them, and not actually tried them, but for the most part they seem fairly easy, with forgiving mechanics, and little to no one shots, even back when they came out. Though i would have to say that i completely agree that sigryn is a horrible fight with retarded overlaps.

MM hunter was medium? Took me a couple hours. Granted I half assed it was like 905 with random stat stuff from Argos, shit legendaries and no pots or flasks but I did bring drums! I made a half assed effort to half ass it. But still, hard.

I did the aff challenge with prydaz and reap cloak on the first mage tower with 903 ilvl. Took me over 60 attempts. It was doable but I agree the rng was awful.

I'm going to have to disagree on aff lock being one of the hardest. Maybe it's just because i did it when effigy was still a thing, but for me it was one of the absolute easiest at around ~905 ilvl Most aff locks ive talked to agree that when effigy was a thing it was super easy. I think a point you could of brought up in the video is that because of them removing effigy, the fight went from super easy, to super hard.

I did my ele sham second tower up 80 odd pulls at 903 ilvl. Still proud of that. Average i lvl for completion according to mmoc back then was 911.

Late to the party here, but I 100% agree with the gearing thing. Fire Mage was the first appearance I got and a lot of the issue for me came down to being able to get both imp servants with Dragonfire. Got the helm that same week though, and when the tower was back up, I managed to beat it. Then there was Outlaw Rogue. I didn't have to worry about that at all because the first legendary I got on mine were the healing pants. Just had to cast feint every five seconds and my health was virtually static.

The tank challenge is stupid, not because of the difficulty, but rather because it doesn't have anything to do with tanking. It should have been more like the healer challenge with an actual party and you had to keep mobs off of them, keep things pointed away from them, etc. Instead all we got was a lame dps challenge with a bunch of mechanics that all tried to knock you off the platform. There wasn't even much to mitigate. You either got knocked off or you won. Rarely did I ever die to actual dmg doing it on a druid and a monk.

Did anyone ever really run out of mana in the healing scenario though? The only time i ever saw my mana drop really low, was during the part where you need to heal up 8 adds (due to popping cooldowns and spam healing adds + keeping the team alive), otherwise i felt like the "mini" scenarios were more than short enough to be able to drink inbetween without ever getting into mana issues. It was definitely way too long though...

Did my ret first day it was up as 894 no bis lego , made me so proud, i struggled realy hard with the shield interupt when valkyries spawned at same time . My solution execution sentance for ranged dmg and burst when i got over to the guy ... Atm i have all pala , all druid all dh and arms done , struggeling with prot war abit more gear and its done. The most easy one for me was feral and it was before the BS buff

I have to disagree with shadow being medium for this cause shadow priest one is very easy I did it in like 5 attempts at 915. Just use surrender to madness and burn boss down in like 45 secs. took me 5 because I haven't ever really used surrender to madness as I had swapped to shadow priest after the nerf it received but if your basing it on not using surrender to madness then medium yes I can see. I also didn't have sephuz either when I did literally just got sephuz earlier today. I was using twins painful touch and mothers seduc the shoulders. but with using surrender the shadow one is a complete joke.

The most times i died on the Sigryn challenge was during the last 40%, because it got so boring that i just lost focus and screwed up eventually, even though i had Valeera's pants which made the encounter absolutely trivial.

When i did the healing challenge, there was no punishment for going down to 0 mana in the first phase, cause the whole thing only progressed when you entered the next room, it wasnt timed, you could just regen all the mana and proceed. Same was true for every cooldown including lay on hands, you used it in the fist phase, no big deal, just go and do the dishes and its gonna be up. Not sure what was Preach talking about with the mana conservation and cooldown management :D it was the complete opposite.

>hardest >aff lock L U L yeah the highmountain one was pretty buggy but if you did it on BM without a ton of gear and did everything correctly it was really good imo. i thought it was one of the best one because it used almost every tool a bm hunter could have outside of traps, aspect of the cheetah, and disengage. also you're meant to keep your pet near the worm when it's top side so it stops screaming (roots nullified it so i assume you used them as i see in your clip it's not near it)

In my opinion, what they should have done is give you special food, flasks, gear etc when you enter the Mage tower. Also, make it repeatable and instead of locking the other colours behind shit like do all legion dungeons they should have made you redo the challenge but it gets harder for each colour.

I finished it on fire mage, resto shaman and vengence demon Hunter, I didn't bother when it came out, did them all at 930ish ilvl. I'm gonna finish all the challenges before legion ends.

If you had used Surrender for Shadow you could have placed this firmly as easy. All you really needed was decent Nighthold gear to kill it fast enough in surrender.

Doing the healing one as a druid was a big trauma i managed to kill the final boss with my dots while i was already dead and thank god the little rp that was added in the end when you fail it helped a lot cause without it i might have no get the staff. The tank one was most decent but i can not say the same for warriors or even paladins. the dps ones almost same things like yours in the video.

frost mage dilemma is that in lower gear = you need the punch of your spells but in higher gear you kill the adds too fast to effectively fish for procs

The runes on the twins challenge is actually really simple as an affliction warlock as you can make your pets soak the runes for you.
