Route 113 is a perfect example of good route design that's been missing from modern Pokemon games for awhile. It's visually interesting (soot snow and grass), it's got additional content (collecting the soot for the glass blower), it has unique encounters (spinda and skarmory), local lore (it ties into Mt. Chimney and Fallarbor Town, as well as the specialized trainer classes appearing to show what kind of people frequent the area), and it's got a fair amount of NPCs to both talk with and battle. The only thing it's missing is a secret area that you can come back and access with further progression with special rewards, but you could certainly argue the Pretty furniture and secret base location count for that. Imo we need a ton more Route 113s and a ton less Poco Paths.

As someone who started with Pokémon Crystal, it felt like a HUGE leap forward when I played Ruby for the first time. I still remember when my Mom gave me the game all these years later. I don’t think any Pokémon game since had that sort of pure magic about it. The music, the routes, the bad guys. This game felt much more high stakes.
@bitzibaerlie7 ай бұрын
Well put! I had a very similar experience. Hoenn had so many memorable places. Shoal Cave I spent so much time in. Sky Pillar as well but mainly because I was terrible at biking and did not know about repels. Also the whole underwater area and the legendary golems. Oh, and the shipwreck. No region ever felt that unique and diverse again for me. Newer regions have a lot of unique environments but they feel too patchworky for me. Hoenn feels very cohesive in comparison.

For me, this route was like telling me how far I've gone in the game even though you're still heading to the 4th gym. I mean first of all, you get 2 rides from Mr. Briney getting to an island to another coast to see more green and familiar terrain other than the sandy terrain from Dewford town then you got met with that volcano cave then what's behind the volcanoes (that ashy route, the meteor falls, the grey rocks, etc.) which hit really different. I know the later games have those too but the later games give you fly so early that you can head back home quite easily making the hometown less magical. This part makes you feel like you've gone so far yet so near specially when you look at the map seeing how many short cuts there are to your home and having the right side of the map still needed to be explored. But before you even try to explore the right side of Hoenn, after getting surf, it's quite easy to get lost or side tracked surfing at the left side of Hoenn exploring different islands, the abandoned ship and so on since Mr. Briney disappeared. And once you finally decide on crossing the river at route 118, it would be a new adventure! I think Hoenn in general is just magical and no other Gens replicate that feeling. Black and White 2 was pretty close however.

It was a lonely and cold evening and I was sitting in my bear-themed orange folding chair by the TV in my old house and I still remember how warm the incandescent ceiling light looked. And that Blaziken? It was and still is the coolest Pokémon ever. Every time I hear Route 113 I just break down and cry silently, wishing I could go back to that evening even for a minute.

Really enjoyed this video! In terms of other routes in Pokémon I consider 'iconic', I think it is mostly Hoenn that springs to mind. I think the improved graphics of the GBA compared to the Gen I and II games, and the theme of the region being 'people living with nature' combine well to create some really imaginative routes compared to the (mostly) ordinary grassy plains and pathways of Kanto and Johto. If I had to name one section of Hoenn that is particularly iconic to me, I'd say the rainforests of Route 119 and Route 120. As a child playing Sapphire for the first time, entering Route 119 really felt like I was on a proper adventure, moving away from well-maintained paths between big cities and moving into something a lot more wild. My handcanon as a 9-year-old kid was that tourists who wanted to travel between Slateport and Lilycove would probably just take a ship, and it was only Pokemon Rangers who wanted to see the nature, or serious trainer who wanted challenge the Foretree Gym, who would go the long way around. In terms of routes in other regions I like, I always found Johto Routes 38 and 39 exciting as a kid. Less for the way the routes looked and felt, but more for the music. Again, the sense of adventure and grandness of it always appealed to me as a child.

I always loved this route too, especially because it's a great example of great world building and contextualization! @leilaclarridge58077 ай бұрын
This route, as well as frequent brushes with lava and traversal in the deep sea, makes me think that humans in the Pokemon world are way more durable than humans in the real world. The ash would be a respiratory hazard for real humans, because it's basically flaked glass made from volcanic mineral, yet there are even little kids hiding out under it when it should be destroying their eyes. It makes sense considering what they have to deal with on a regular basis, what with all of the fire breathing, blizzard whipping, sandstorm summoning, rock throwing beasts everywhere. Human in the world of Pokemon must have evolved to survive things that would kill us.
@Oceane18037 ай бұрын
But doesn't all that ash make many people in the Hoenn region, including Wally because of his respiratory problems, sick ? And isn't that the reason why Wally has to go live in Verdanturf ? Because it's the one place in Hoenn that's completely spared by the ash ?

It's almost like they wanted to put a snowy area in Hoenn, but couldn't because of the region's warm climate. So they got very creative by showing what a tropical version of snow would look like. 113 really immersed me in the alien reality of volcanic ash being playground-like weather, drawing a parallel to snow. Then there's the actual "Winter" area of Shoal Cave, which is late-game and located basically in the ocean, somewhere that could realistically be very cold despite Hoenn's climate.

Route 113 has always been my favorite too!! I spent so much time there, and used to leave my gba open with the music playing.

I had the sickest hideout when I was a kid. I would play my ruby version everyday. Loved the hot springs in Lavaridge town.
