I think it can only help a director to have some first hand experience in the role of DP. I spent a long time feeling too intimidated to even pick up a DSLR and shoot a little thing and I always had to rely on other people to shoot for me. Once I got confident enough to just pick up the camera and shoot something, it opened up all sorts of possibilities!

I came across your channel when I watched the Moonlight Man and I have to say, your short horror films are original and amazing! I liked how in the Rasp your character used their common sense unlike popular movies where characters have a variety of different choices to make and they always choose the most stupid ones. I really like how you put effort into little details (such as the shadow in the Rasp and the monster blinking in the Moonlight man) to make the film even better. I really look forward to seeing more of your work :D

Thanks for delivering on this, another solid BTS video! One thing you didn't mention that I was wondering is did you use an actual gun cocking sound effect with the stapler or was that genuinely just a stapler noise?
@dannyfdonahue
@dannyfdonahue 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking it out! And that's a good question, and the answer is yes, there's an actual gun sound buried in there! Actually when we did the stapler gag on set, it sounded remarkably similar to a gun cocking, but not quite as much as I wanted to really drive the joke home. So I layered some recordings I had made of a Model 1873 Winchester lever-action rifle underneath it, because it made a really classic gun cocking sound.

@j.jmarlon1417
@j.jmarlon1417 7 жыл бұрын
Danny Donahue yeah. I've studied light and sound recently and I wanted to know, when working on suspense, do you pay more attention to both lighting and sound, or one in particular.
@dannyfdonahue
@dannyfdonahue 7 жыл бұрын
I pay attention to both because they're both very important. Ultimately I spend a lot more time working on post sound because lighting setups are only done for the duration of the shoot (usually a day on films this short) but sound design is a process that normally takes me many days to complete.

You should start exploring comedy and mixing that into horror. The Rasp film was brilliantly executed. I feel the stapler scene could've been used for a comedic scene, like the character tries using different weapons or potential weapons and resorts to using a stapler for the sfx. A little more complex, and I like your simple films. But just a thought because Rasp was able to be horror, and the character had the potential to be comedic. Just a thought.

I love the BTS process of any film, especially when they really talk about the entire film instead of just pointing out one or two interesting details. I also have a question. Because you used the same arm from the Moonlight Man, does this mean it's the same person/creature from the other short or is this an entirely new entity?
@dannyfdonahue
@dannyfdonahue 7 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it! No, I didn't intend for it to be the same creature, but it's also undefined, so there aren't hard and fast rules about what this creature is exactly. Perhaps it's a relative!

you are an absolutely fantastic filmmaker. and I would really like to know what inspired Rasp and the how you got your idea for the creature.
@dannyfdonahue
@dannyfdonahue 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! The idea for Rasp was really inspired by creepy people showing up at the bus stop outside the apartment. Because the production schedule was so short, the creature is just a combo of existing creature pieces I had made for other things -- the head of one and the hands of another (The Moonlight Man).

+Sumer Singh Do you have access to a camera of any kind? Even a phone with a camera? I do have some equipment for my shorts, but Rasp was almost made for free. You don't need a lot of money to make a fun short film. I realize not everyone has access to the essentials, but if you do have something to film with, you can make something! I think film school is a good idea too. It's not for everyone, but I went and found it to be a really good learning experience.
