I'm planning a round the world cycling trip next year but I certainly wouldn't have used a Rolhoff hub gear as it would be too complicated to fix if it broke. Trying to source spares in some isolated location would be a nightmare. Granted, a rear derailleur system is more vulnerable but at least you can knock up something to get you out of trouble. Also, I wouldn't do my training on a bike I wasn't intending to take on the trip. You have to put in some serious miles on the bike you'll be riding. especially when trying to set world records. You can't just get a bike without testing it fully before travelling...that's just asking for trouble.

I would have just started in paris and cycle round the block and say "I've done it!" Would like to do something like that, but seems like too many constant challanges, I wouldn't even know where to pitch a tent or if I was allowed to, and then you don't want to find your bike nicked when you wake up again.

That's what I was thinking. It's not just about doing the actual cycling. But I would be worried sick where I'd spent my nights. And after central Europe I'd freak out about stuff like "will I always be able to get clean water... Where do I get those 6000 calories from? Especially in remote places. What happens if my bike breaks down in the desert? What if it gets stolen?"

The first few days are hell. Everything hurts. You cant sleep but you are really tired so you lay there till the sun comes up and then you get up. The second day you deal with the aches and pains from the first day. You eat like a horse and drink like a horse. Always hungry. At night you are still not gtting much sleep but it is better than the first night where you got nearly no sleep. By day three things are looking up. You dont feel as much pain and your body deals with what it is being asked to do. By day 4 i was feeling like superman and that i can go all day long. I was getting stronger and stronger. The sleep for me was still only marginally better than on the first day. I wish i could sleep like mark here but it does not work for me. I nod off and go into deep sleep for about 1.5 or 2 hours and then wake up. Then i cant really go back to sleep no matter how much i try. By day 10 i was thinking what is all the fuss about since this is not even that hard. I did over 1000 miles in 10 days across europe to see somebody and then cycled the same amount back. It can be done. Some people cant deal with the isolation and lack of human interaction on trips like this if they are doing it alone. It does take a special kind of person if you need lots of social interaction on trips like this. The isolation and solitutde did not bother me one single bit. I was made for it. Just like mark.

And even better the one person who claims it's so easy, he can do it in way less time. Also Mark is not smiling nearly enough, looks like he is not enjoying himself... Bunch of trolls

@boxlid2149 жыл бұрын
C 19 They are well worth it when building them correctly yourself, and serviced properly at stated frequency. I don't think this guy had the right rim and spokes to go with that hub, and likely the tires weren't the best either. Never use a new bike or wheels for long distance tours unless you know how to tension them yourself and are prepared with tools and spokes, since most wheels need to be checked at or before 500mi of break-in time (shop where purchased will usually do it for free). Load all heavy stuff in the front panniers to stop breaking rear spokes, pack the rear light since most modern bikes are rear weight biased. One good place where cheap is certainly better would be the tires, since a set of 700x32 Vittoria Randonneurs would've got him far and fast for a surprising $25/tire :)
@Mr76K19769 жыл бұрын
Brent, any thoughts to my question??? Ive read about people having to replace such parts after only 2000 pedaled miles which doesnt seem like much... thank you.
@Mr76K19769 жыл бұрын
Brent B or the chain itself.. its hard to believe a single bike chain would last anywhere near or over 10,000 miles.. just sayin..
@boxlid2149 жыл бұрын
Mr76K1976 Yes, you must know what to bring because the extra weight will tax your bike. I kill (well beyond 50% worn on the guage with 75% being critical) better quality chains in about 2,000mi, but I have large legs for my size and pedal hard with a lower cadence (sure that doesn't help since I get more stretch on them). If you keep the chain in spec, the gears will last quite a while though. I'd still bring extra chainrings or anything light, especially bearings. I destroy the pedal bearings every 1000mi or less lol

Bailey Frost Sure is, touring bikes make a helluva difference. I built a custom Vaya Travel about two years ago and haven't rode another bike since. Just finished a 500mi ride through Michigan's 45th parallel region (lots of microbrews, distilleries, and wineries visited), and planning a few very long trips throughout the western states, Florida keys, and Australia. Touring on MTB's kicks your ass from tire resistance and wind resistance (no drop bars to reduce wind resistance and relieve hands by moving them around). Put thousands of loaded miles on my older Rockhopper and don't miss it the least bit :)

What the heck are they talking about? They're claiming that riding 100 miles a day requires eating 24 cheeseburgers a day? That's utterly insane. 100 miles a day is nothing. I did close to that for a month straight loaded up with full touring gear and I barely ate more than an average person going to the office on a wednesday. They make it sound as though he's climbing everest unassisted.
@MrTynanDraper7 жыл бұрын
Doctors are always advising to drink water non stop all day even you sit in the office all day. And eat like a cow when you do any physical exercise. No need to take them seriously. Just trust your body.
@sortedtales7 жыл бұрын
True, it's baffling. I've often wondered about the 'recommended daily intake' for various nutrients. I think you'd have to eat 10 oranges, 2 lbs of kale, 5lbs of fish, 10 tomatoes, 5 cups of berries, a dozen rutabagas, 10 carrots, and a bushel of apples to meet the recommended levels. I'd be one radiant and glowing fatass if I did that.
@joshctaylor8 жыл бұрын
Its annoys me a little when people buy the most customised and expensive bikes for long distance cycling. The best bike is the one that people can fix where your going. Normally thats a standard steel bike. Try getting aluminium or carbon fixed in a workshop in rural Laos, steel - no problem, chains easy. Tyres sure.
