I can't imagine just how disorienting it must be for him. Did he suffer an extremely traumatic event at some point that his brain has erased that portion of time from his memory? We may never know. Thanks, Avery for another fascinating story. It's truly something straight out of The Twilight Zone.

This is just my opinion: I have heard of dissociating into multiple personalities, temporary bouts of dissociation/ derealization, amnesia due to a head injury or brain injury of some kind. But 27 years of dissociative amnesia (except he used his SSN until 1983) and no desire to search for his identity? It sounds to me as if this is truly escapism, walking out of his own life.

How many people after all that time accept immediate family would be able to hazard a guess? I’m 63 and when I see some folks from high school I had been friends with I don’t recognize them usually till I’ve had time to think about it for a while

That is true. After time it is harder to recognize people! Probably why these kinds of situations can be so tricky to navigate
