So a couple missed connections regarding the names and families: - The guy they're holding captive is Steve Giraci. He was a detective in Marty and Rust's homicide unit in 95. We saw him when he got into an argument with Rust and Rust bitchslapped him - Before working in homicide, Geraci apparently worked for Sheriff Ted Childress in another county. Childress was the dude who told Marty and Rust about the spaghetti monster and swept Marie Fontenos disappearance under the rug. - The name Childress is newly introduced and important. It was one of the names the old black maid told Rust and Marty about. Childress is one of the branches of the Tutle family - Also important detail: Childress was also the name of one of the guards who were in charge of the junkie in 05 that killed himself after he mentioned the Yellow King to Rust.

The guy who Marty and Rust spoke in ‘95 about the spaghetti monster and Marie Fontenot was Sheriff Tate, the (or a) successor to Sheriff Childress. Note, Marie Fontenot disappeared five years prior to that while Childress was the sheriff.

Pretty sure the older cop who was always walking around with Tuttle in the station in ‘95 was a Childress. Edit: To be even more specific, in episode 1, a old cop looks at Marty and his boss through the office window while Marty is talking to his boss about how he thinks Rust is good at the job. This cop enters the boss’ office as soon as Marty leaves. I believe he is a Childress. In the same episode, Marty’s boss does a presser, with Marty and Rust on stage. This cop is also on stage, staring at them, not the crowd.

One of my favorite lines in this episode is when Marty says "you shouldn't have that" about the tape and Rust replies "nobody should have that". I've always interpreted it not as "this tape is bad and nobody should own this" but rather as "this is proof of an evil so dark, it shouldn't even exist, yet it does". Almost as if Rust is telling Marty if this evil exists and they're the only ones who can do something about it, they have to.

So now is a good time to drop this bit: In True Detective you've been introduced to the concepts of the Yellow King and Carcosa. IRL, in the late 1800s, Robert Chambers published a collection of stories called "The King in Yellow", where at the center of the stories is a play called The King in Yellow. Anyone who reads the play eventually goes insane and meets a horrible fate. In one such story, a man takes refuge in a church after reading The King in Yellow. However, he is unable to escape his fate and the King appears to him and transports him to Carcosa. To this end, True Detective S1 is firmly planted (IMO) in the genre of "weird fiction". There are other tidbits that carry this tone, like when Farrar recounts finding the old book "The Letters of Telios Delorca" written by the (imaginary) Franciscan mystic. This is a nod to the Necronomicon as imagined by the author of many weird fiction and cosmic horror stories, H.P. Lovercraft. In his stories, the tome was written by the "mad Arab Abdul Alhazred" (a mystic?). To cap this all off, H.P. Lovecraft is the creator of Cthulu, a gargantuan, cosmic being with a tentacled face, sometimes depicted with green skin. So, a green spaghetti-faced giant if you will.

Not showing anything explicit from the tape is brilliant. When Marty, a veteran homicide detective, almost immediately freaks out and turns it off you just know it has to be unbelievably horrific to shake him that badly.
@pabloc8808
@pabloc8808 13 күн бұрын
It plays on the way fear/horror works in our minds, nothing you see can ever be scarier than what you don't see, because when we don't see something our minds imagine something bad, then something worse, then something even worse, and keep exaggerating it to the point of abstraction; where you no longer know exactly what you're afraid of, but you're certain it is the literal worst thing in the world (whatever that may be). We never see the tape, but we can't help but think "that girl was obviously gangr*ped by the cultists". Then you go "ok but, horrific as that is, it's also kinda common. What could be worse than that?" And that's when your mind goes to that place of abstraction, where you just know whatever you can imagine, it's worse.

I think the most logical explanation about cultist beliefs and ideologies directly about this episode, since you guys are discussing it, and this is completely spoiler-free and just my opinion, is that people that have grown around this type of groups of people, basically almost consider it like part of their normal lives, and they look at it from a different perspective one which people outside of it can't ever understand. You can call it brain-washed if you like but you get the point. If you do this for enough years, with all the things you see etc, you end up believing it is true. For a person that grows old under these people and circumstances, no wonder they would sound weird when talking to them about it.

David Wiegand of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote at the time: “The dialog is eloquent, descriptive and provocative, and it contributes to the series' gruesome mood.” Director Cary Joji Fukunaga makes excellent use of the Louisiana locations, giving them the same importance in terms of the plot as the characters Cohle and Hart. All the performances are terrific, but those of McConaughey and Harrelson are in a class of their own.” Personally, I was blown away by McConaughey's performance, he plays so superbly. 🤩 Outstanding series.

What gets me in this episode is that after all this time Rust believes he owes a debt to his victims and future victims of the Yellow King and his acolytes. -------- Rust worked the shadows for more than a decade to track the tall man in green with the scars. ------- He's terrified grown men, little kids, family members, since his cruelty know no bounds. -------- If Chole was a different man the Yellow King would have carried on his rampage of murder and torture to turn this world into Carcosa. -------- Thank God Rust Chole is a relentless task master at dissecting the clues. All praise to the Taxman, his ledger is never closed.

I was really surprised they missed that. Rust has shown signs of being suicidal throughout the whole series--he smokes like he's actively trying to give himself lung cancer, he's a heavy alcoholic, he worked a high risk job and took special assignments undercover, the drugs and he even mentioned earlier in the season when Marty asked him why he bothers going on if he feels everything is pointless, that he "lacks the constitution for suicide." He's clearly contemplated it in detail and wasn't able to go through with the actual act at the time.

The way this show was structured, each season is sort of a “mini-series” But I would have eagerly watched 3 or 4 seasons of Marty and Rust. It’s a rare example of onscreen magic. Looking forward to the finale with you. One of the great strengths is the regional location, which is steeped in weirdness and mystique. One feature film that carries some of that element, and would make a very good choice for reaction during the Halloween season (or any time of year) is ‘Angel Heart’ (1987) with Mickey Rourke and Robert DeNiro. It’s set in 1950s Louisiana, and it reeks of atmosphere and voodoo. It has rarely been reacted to, and certainly not by your caliber of channel. Highly recommended.

I dont know if "trust" is the right word for what Rust is feeling towards Marty at the reunion, here. I think its more a sense of righteousness backed up by the fact that he has leverage against him. He knows Marty well enough that he'll bend to the concept of duty, but is also enough of a coward that he won't let the truth of what happened in 95 come out, risking his comfortable safe life. He knows hes got Marty by the balls, both legally and personally, and he's willing to twist

Rust put a lot of trust in Marty. If Marty was still bitter about the past then he could have had Rust arrested for kiddie corn

I think someone would have to be more than just bitter to do that. They'd have to be a complete psychopath and not the kind where people just say "you're a psycho," but a legit one.

Idk I would give the show like 7.5 out of 10 I don’t think it felt like a complete season of all that happen but just flashbacks mixed with some present day storytelling

The Steve guy Marty went and saw was the cop who called Rust a rat fuck after he called them out for drinking and then Rust walked over and slapped him in the face and said “say it again rummy”, then Steve said fuck you tax man. Very memorable scene tbh.
