If the movie was about what it was supposed to be, you’d be more than satisfied. 2 hours is plenty of time to make movies like Goodfellas and The Departed. I just watched the movie and being a HUGE fan of sopranos I guess I had very very high expectations. It's a good movie because I will never say anything related to sopranos is bad. Quick question tho why did Sil have a case of Benjamin button? He looks older when he was young then when he was old? That weirded me out. Anyways back to the movie I had another question was Christopher the love child of dickies gommah? They said Joann couldn't have kids? Makes sense since Christopher looks like dickies gommah.. oh ya I'm guessing the cop never killed dickie or took the contract from Joey Ruffalo...f**kin junior I guess karma came around...side not I love how they put Janice's story from "sopranos home movie " episode about Johnny boy shooting Livia thru her beehive hairdue loooool yesss!!!!!

@syndrome53723 жыл бұрын
@@sionphillips7141 it definately isn't, dude. It's 2 hours of a black guy making a gang (which never even goes anywhere) and sometimes a character from the sopranos turns up, usually to say something cartoonishly racist. Even dickies whole story was basically "I have a gourmand! Wait...she fucked the black guy!!", so even that storyline is entirely about the real main character. Nothing remotely sopranos-esque happens until literally the last shot of the movie, and if they made it just a standard generic gangster movie instead of an alleged sopranos prequel, they wouldn't even have to change anything. The first half of the movie is pretty much just recreating the mostly peaceful riots last year... they even have multiple characters use lines like "get him...no wait, he's white". It was cringe. Spoiler for both the film and video: While the film suggests that Junior ordered the hit on Dickie, I think this idea is flawed for two reasons: 1) Both Junior and Dickie were made guys so Junior couldn’t order a hit on Dickie without it blowing back up at him. Does Junior seem like the type of guy courageous enough to break that rule? My guess is no. Even if Dickie weren’t a made guy, nobody would sanction the hit on Dickie just to satisfy Junior. 2) Junior is not the type to act when slighted. Even when Tony was teasing him in Boca, Junior kept his cool even after revealing to Mikey that Tony was seeing a shrink. It was Livia’s words that pushed him over the edge. From this I would claim that Dickie’s shooting followed by the “It’s done” call Junior receives are about two separate events. I think it’s clear that Dickie wasn’t killed on the orders of Jilly Ruffalo who was barely referenced (Dickie talks about the eye he took out). Could’ve been taken out by someone Howard hired but we have to be suspicious about Junior ordering the hit. I mostly agree with this review: the acting is superb all around but there are characters like Guissipina that are totally unnecessary and superfluous. I would like to see the David Chase final cut of this film if this isn’t it because it felt lacking in a lot of areas and might have been better as a 2.5 hr film.

Correct, there is zero discussion in this film about who is made, who is the boss, etc. Joey Diaz spends enough time in the film we should at least know who he is and his status but just like most characters he comes and goes with no consequence. If you reference the trouble Johnny Sack had with Ralph Ciferetto and the mole joke, even Johnny Sack, who was an underboss, couldn’t get Ralph wacked. So the fact that junior could pull that off on a guy who ran the crew and was probably ranked higher than him, in the sopranos universe does NOT work. It was a cheap, easy ploy to shoehorn it into an otherwise plotless, empty script. Big missed opportunity here.

HBO has all the resources in the world to have made it a series. Even a miniseries would’ve sufficed. Character development is a key element to The Sopranos. Audiences are intelligent and what an intelligent plot. Felt like this was a slap in the face to fans.

As a DIE HARD Sopranos fan.. I absolutely HATED this movie! Felt like such a slap in the face! All the obvious forced references to the original series.. I wonder if David Chase even NOTICED the continuity errors from the original show! Like, when Janice tells the story of when Johnny Boy shot Livia in her “bee hive hairdo” was no mention of Dickie M being there, but rather Junior! And how much older was Silvio Pussy and PaulieI’m sure Pauline was older but cmon to say Silvio was already an adult working for the Dimeo crime family when Tony Soprano was literally just a small kid still? Tf…? I dunno bro, just got done with my second viewing and still extremely underwhelming..

My brother said a similar thing, the race riots stuff shouldn't have been included it as it didn't need to be, Leslie Odam Jr should have been in it but otherwise the race shit was forced in half the movie and it's joke. Show it on a TV or radio in the background and have a character mention it or briefly show it but don't fill half the movie with it for one characters sake. It's like no film can come out nowadays without some sort of racial divide plot in it especially if it set in a time when one town or city had a racial issue. They even did it in the Silence of the Lambs TV series 'Clarice' which is set in the early 90's and 'The Man in the High Castle' squeezed it in in the later seasons and that's set in an alternate Nazi/Japanese controlled 60's U.S, they always create some 'black coalition against whitey' It's a waste of time, leaves things unanswered and then has to squeeze everything the film was supposed to be about in half the time. If they wanna make something about race shit , riots, civil rights then do that, stop forcing it in every program or remake, everything gets infected with the shit. Edit: Updated post with more reasoning due to soy defenders getting emotionally affected, their white knight supreme defender of minority complex can't help coming out at every opportunity. Feminine incels. This was supposed to be a Sopranos story not half a movie and half a civil rights movie, I didn't pay to see that shit. Also replies I've made are being removed/censored. Dead on correct review! I’ve watched the sopranos since it aired and have watched every episode at least 3 times each. This should have been a mini series at least 8 episodes 2 hours each to do the character development. I will say Dickies character left me wanting so much more. They could have made this way bigger and a lot more money from it. It’s a shame!

I felt The Irishman should have been an 8 episode or 8 hour mini series too (missed chance to see a young DeNiro serving in WW2, learning to be a killer, etc) but Martin Scorcese looks down on the TV/Netflix format, and David Chase always wanted to do film, not television. I think EGOs made both these guys do a film instead of a more appropriate series.

When it comes to "wokeness" in movies/TV in general, the part that bothers me isnt really the opinions. *Spoilers* I believe the problem about this movie was that it didn't touch any of the characters we deeply loved. Ofc, seeing Dickie Moltisanti was great and all but it was lacking a lot. A 2 hour movie was not enough time to show off the real relationship Tony and Dickie had. Hell we don't even get to see much of Tony's father at all. Not only that but they left at a cliffhanger as well. I really hope David Chase adds more to the story. Especially when Tony joins his father's crew, how he became made and the things he had to do. Not only that but seeing how they become a very powerful mob family in NJ. Idk, the movie was a 6/10 for me. I wished they did more because there was so much potential. Also *MAJOR SPOILER* Finding out that it was Jr who got Dickie killed because he couldn't take a simple joke was a complete waste. Mainly because it was never mentioned in The Sopranos. It was a shock yes but it makes the story very fucking bland. However, seeing Michael Gandolfini reprise his father's role made me feel chills and he did a good job. Let me tell you a couple of three things. Junior would have wanted to discredit his character. If he killed him because he didn’t like being under his shadow in life, he surely wouldn’t have like it when people spoke fondly of him in death. Just as he went in cahoots with Livia when he wanted to whack Tony, it’s made pretty clear at the end that she would gladly have spread unfounded theories about Dickie. (When she was slobbering about the two bottles of pills found on him) Ironically he had got them indirectly for her.

Agree with what most people are saying: I want to explore this timeframe of the Sopranos universe as a 13 episode miniseries. The characters were well acted, the writing was good… but it all doesn’t add up to much. You know that expression: “the sum is greater than the parts”… this movie was the opposite of that. My take walking out of the theater was overall a thumbs up, but definitely not a great movie. Maybe a good movie. Somewhere between “okay “ and “good.” 7/10. A must-watch for Sopranos fans; who won’t be disappointed, but definitely won’t be blown away either.

@Jo Ol We only had two hours to go into the back story of numerous characters from the series. There wasn't enough time, since Chase decided to introduce a number of new characters, only one of which was ever mentioned in the series, to wit: Willie Overall (Tony's first murder). We get a few minutes of Jackie Abril and Tony Blundetto(Ice Cream Truck), and without the time for any character development, we see Tony beating up his friend, when he can't score some beer?? Let's be honest, Chase brought in the other characters, for the same reason that, "Friends", and "Seinfeld" would not be able to air, with the current lineup(s). He needed to add "demographics", to satisfy Warner Brothers and HBO and not become a victim of the mob (pun intended).

The ending scene with the pinky was absolute Kino...If it had been earned. I felt like the movie patted itself on the back for something it really didn't explore. I knew it was not going to be focused on young tony but god damn if the trailers didn't give the impression that he would be focused on more than he was. I dunno, I'll give it another watch on the small screen some time in the future. I felt a lot of the call back scenes felt super forced. And personally I rolled my eyes at the cinema during THAT phrase with junior. He might as well winked at the camera. Chris narrating was cool but it just seems so wasted. The ingredients for a fantastic prequel are there to be sure, and maybe a mini series or limited series to continue Tony's story would be fantastic. Gandolfini was great, but I have to say for all the talk on his portrayal of Tony, for obvious reasons, the young actor who played pre-teen Tony was amazing as well, to be honest I almost think his scenes did more to advance the character development of Tony than Gandolfini's.

Wel er... The movie was so-so.... Didnt really explain who killed Dickie... Looked like Junior to me. Characters werent fleshed out enough.... What purpose did Dickie's uncle( Dickie's father's twin) in jail serve....There was no real explanantion for Dickie's rage...IJS. But there is one very interesting scene where Chris starts crying when Tony wants to hold him when Chris is a baby. Tony states that 'He always cries whenever he comes near me. I didnt do anything to him' Then the family matriarch reveals an old wives tale about children that react in that fashion can see "beyond the present". Makes sense being that Tony murders Chris 30 years later. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a "6"

This film is to the Sopranos what Roque One is to the Star Wars films, it's a story from the franchise being told on its own.
