I know what’s different about the gamecube: it’s a different Nintendo. The nes/snes was its own era, the n64 was nintendo trying to figure out how to 3d, but the gamecube was pure nintendo spirit embodied on a their most powerful and 3d capable console. They had so few hardware limitations compared to the past, a broad community they to cater too, and just in general so many freedoms, but with said freedoms and remaining funds from other systems they forgot that they still had to get new fans. Ever since the gamecube flopped (probably for that reason among other things), it’s always been a more casual and business nintendo. They still listen to fans more than sony or microsoft, but since they really have to try now to draw in new casual fans to keep themselves afloat, we rarely get to see that quirky, unhinged side of nintendo anymore that made their gamecube games so good. Old fans will only buy so much (nobody’s gonna buy 50 switches just because it has the best game ever when one is enough to play it), but new fans need to be convinced that they’re actually gonna like playing video games, and just seeing the game itself may not do the trick when they need to pay another $300 price tag to play it. Catering to the casual market is a balancing act since you have to provide both the supply and _convince_ everyone else to provide the demand instead of it naturally being there.

I mostly agree with this, but I would like to point out that catering to the casual market is probably the worst choice they've ever made. A dedicated player will buy things like online subscriptions, DLC, and new games, but a new casual player will maybe buy one console, one or two games, and then barely touch the system again. Look at the Wii and how many people bought it. Even before the Wii U came out, most of the casual audience had stopped using their Wiis and just left them alone, but the dedicated fans were still buying new games and an even smaller number of heavily dedicated fans that bought the Wii U

I miss how unique and creative the Mario series was back in the 2000s. I feel like Nintendo were more willing to actually take risks and it paid off in the end spectacularly. Well notice the sales of the Gamecube and a lot of its games. They are likely low due to the PS2 completely dominating the market and Xbox having its own line up of fantastic and unique exclusives, however Nintendo may have associated the Gamecube's sales to the creative decisions in a lot of their series (Mario included) at the time.)

To be honest, I think if we got a proper Mario Kart 9 on the Switch. I think to stand out from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, they should do a new Double Dash game. Also Nintendo and Bandai Namco should port Mario Kart Arcade GP DX to Switch.
